BOXING.
Contests in aid of the local canteen fund were staged at the New Theatre, Port
Talbot, on Friday. The principal bout was between Griff GRIFFITHS (Ynysybwl) and
Will POWIS (Pontypridd). Half-way through the twelfth round the referee
disqualified POWIS for what he termed "dangerous hitting."
A ten-rounds bout between Billy SHEA (Aberavon) and Bert EVANS (Neath) ended in
favour of SHEA on points.
Young Freddy WELSH (Pontypridd) and Bill BEYNON (Taibach) provided a great
struggle in the chief event over ten rounds at Tonypandy Pavilion on Friday and
the referee's verdict was a draw at the close.
Strangely enough, the two six-round minor bouts ended in the second round, Idris
PUGH (Tonypandy) knocking out Young COOK (Trealaw) and Alf ROSE (Penygraig)
knocking out Young REES (Dinas).
Ray BRIDGE (Trealaw) defeated Trevor JENKINS (Llwnypia) in a six-round bout by a
narrow margin of points.
A boxing tournament was held at Abertridwr Workmen's-hall on
Friday in aid of the children's boot fund. Tommy REARDON (Mountain Ash) and
Sammy LEWIS (Ynysybwl) fought a ten-round draw. Kid WALSH (Merthyr) and Dan
O'CONNOR (Pontypridd) met in a scheduled ten-round contest, but WALSH retired in
the ninth session, one of his eyes being badly injured. Rocky SMITH (Abertridwr)
and Snowy REYNOLDS (Senghenydd) fought six hard, but not very scientific,
rounds, and ROWLANDS was declared the winner. Ambrose HARVEY (Abertridwyr)
defeated Young WILLS (Mountain Ash) on points over four rounds.
