May I add something to your conjecture about the steel industry. Part of
my family began in Neath and then went to Bassaleg. The men were
'platers'. They then went on to Pontypool where they again worked as
"platers". I have never investigated this part of the family, too many
Lewis's but I wonder if they were tin platers as I believe there was a
tin-plate works in all three places.

From the places the family lived, I have the strong suspicion that
both Mrs
Castle's first husband and her son-in-law may well have had something to do
with the steel industry, though the Aluminium works at Rogerstone might also
be a possibility for a move to Bassaleg. Oundle district is near Corby.
