This is an incredibly long, long, shot.
I am researching a Richard CHEESMAN of Monmouth County (New Jersey, USA) who
purchased land in 1720 in Old Gloucester County, New Jersey. The genealogy
of this family has been worked since the late 1800s and no conclusive
evidence has been found for his parents. His brother (Ephraim) was a Quaker
and so was the family of one of his sons. Neither Richard nor his siblings
show up in the Quaker MM records for the nearest Meeting nor does the
Cheesman name show up at all in the Monmouth County New Jersey records.
As he could not sign his name, I'm wondering if maybe the scribe got it
partially wrong when he said that he was of Monmouth, New Jersey.
What would be the easiest way of finding (remotely) if there were any
CHEESMAN/CHEASMAN/CHEESEMAN, etc. Quaker families in Monmouthshire in the
1600/1700s?
I don't want to spend a lot of time on it because it is a long shot but as
far as I know, no one else has checked.
Thanks!
Ed.
