BARD'S ELECTION.
Through the death of Mr. Ellis EDWARDS, Tai Ucha, a vacancy occurred in the
representation of Corwen Upper Ward upon the Edeyrnion Rural District Council
and Mr. Hugh Lloyd Williams HUGHES, of Geufron Fawr, Corwen, and Mr.John
Salusbury ROBERTS, of Vaenol, Corwen, received nomination. To avoid a contest
the latter has now withdrawn, and Mr. HUGHES has been elected. He is well known
in literary circles, having gained a large number chairs and other valuable
prizes for bardic production at eisteddfodau far and near.
DANCE FOR CHARITIES.
The Lord Mayor (Alderman W. GREY) and the Lady Mayoress (Mrs. M. A . JENKINS),
together with their secretaries (Mr. Harold ELLIS and Miss DAVIES), joined the
revellers at the Cardiff Commercial Travellers' Dance at the Park Hotel,
Cardiff. The affair was organised jointly by the social committee and the
ladies' committee of the local branch to help the commercial travellers'
charitees. Mr. R. S. MARSHALL and Mr. T. FRANCIS were the M.C.'s.

Mr. John BASHAM, of Bassaleg, vice-chairman of the St. Mellon's Rural District
Council, who to-day (Saturday) enters upon his eighty-second year, continues to
take an active part in the work of the council and the Newport Board of
Guardians, of which he is also a member.
A native of Bassaleg, he served for three years in the Monmouthshire
Constabulary, and in 1879 removed to his present home, where he took up fruit
growing as a hobby. He has for many years been a fellow of the Royal
Horticultural Society and a member of the R.H.S. Fruit and Vegetable Committee.
As an exhibitor of fruit grown at the Bassaleg Nurseries he has proved
exceptionally successful, and among the shows at which he has served as judge at
the great autumn show of the Royal Horticultural Society and the Chelsea
International Show.
