Hello Darla,
1841 census is at Newport Reference Library on film. It is also at
Cwmbran CRO ( County Records Office) on micro fiche. Also available for
viewing at Bargoed Library in Glamorgan. In my mind it is much easier to
view it on Micro film.
The problem with the 1841 census is that the transcriptions have been
written in pencil and is obscure in many places. The census shows born
in county, yes or no. If they were not born in the county there was no
clue to where they were born.
Ages of children over 10 have been rounded down. ie. A child aged 14
would be shown as 10 and also a child of 13 would be shown as 10, etc.
Likewise adults were the same. A person of 64 could be shown as 60. To
add to this confusion some enumerators entered the ages as they were.
So, there is no level playing field.... as usual when it comes to
genealogy.
I found my Jones ancestors at Manmoel Colliery when I expected them to
be at Victoria. It is a painstaking task to trawl through this census
I'm afraid. I am manning the Gwent Family History help desk at Beaufort
for the 150th Anniversary of Bethel Weslean Methodist next week, along
with The Records office and the Libraries, Churches, Chapels, etc, so I
won't be able to check for you at County Hall I'm afraid. I may be able
to check the following week if you can be patient.
best wishes
Brenda, Gwent

One more question for the list -
Does anyone have the ability to do a look-up on the 1841 census for Victoria,
Parish of Bedwellty? Thanks to Brenda in Gwent, we now know that Victoria is
part of the Briery Hill area Ebbw Vale (MON). I would be so happy to find
any of the following:
Ann Morgan, born July 18, 1823 in Merthyr GLA
David Morgan - her father, a miner
Thomas Benjamin Jones - born June 11, 1821 in Llandyfriog CARDS
Benjamin Jones - his father
If no one has this information - does anyone know the location of the 1841
census for this area - library, archives, etc.? The 1851 census seems to be
easily available, but I haven't heard much about 1841.
Thanks again -
Darla in TX
