I'm currently on my second trip to Newport from Sydney, to further my
research into the JONES family of Newport, and today I had the exciting
discovery that Thomas JONES, born 1847 in Newport to Thomas JONES and
Anne Eliza PEARSE, was Mayor of Newport during 1892-93. He was also
Chief Magistrate in Newport at some stage.
It was even more exciting to discover at the Newport Central Library
today that they have a large format photograph of him, as well as many
other significant documents relating to his civic duties. The staff at
the library were very helpful to me once I discovered my relationship to
a former mayor.
It always helps one's research if you find an ancestor with a
reputation, either of nobility or of notoriety, for it means that they
are more likely to have their life better documented.
The main purpose of this message is to attempt to locate any other
descendants or relatives of Thomas JONES, Mayor of Newport in 1892.
Perhaps readers of this mailing list could suggest to me other means of
publicising my interest in locating living descendants or relatives of
this interesting man.
