This does not mean that Pontymister is part of Machen parish
but part of the urban sub district of Machen which in turn is a
district of Newport registration district.
I believe Pontymister is part of Risca parish.

Subject: [Mon] Pontymister and Machen Lower Puzzle
Hi All,
A number of people have been helpful off list in answering my ROBERTS in
Pontymister question. However a puzzle has arisen which I thought I
would open to a wider audience.
My grandfathers birthplace was recorded (in 1889) as
Pontymister
Machen Lower
Mon USB (or UGB)
It looks like Pontymister is part of Machen Lower but it isn't (is it?).
The 1891 census has the family living at
RG12/4383/f.96/p.24/sched.135 2 Graig View, Machen Lower
This should resolve the question but unfortunately it doesn't. There are
two Graig Views, one in Pontymister and another in Machen.
I favour the Pontymister one because my grandfather said and put in
documents that he was born in Risca.
Is there someone with a detailed knowledge of censuses or geography who
can explain the birth reference, or whether the census reference is to
Machen or Pontymister? Could there be a distinction between Machen Lower
and Lower Machen?
I have already been given some useful geography information but it
doesn't fully resolve the question. Any brilliant ideas out there?
Best wishes, Rod Selden
