After years of searching for the maiden name of Jane, the wife of William
Birt (he born in Bream, Glocs. and she born in Chepstow, Monm.), I have
finally found it!! And I almost missed it because I expected the pages in
the church books to be in sequence. Silly me!!
The first time through I didn't find a marriage but yesterday I went back
to read the Bishop's Transcripts for Chepstow one more time before the film
goes back from the FHC and this time I went on beyond the missing year 1809
to where 1812 should have been, and there was the births, marriages and
burials for 1809 and William Birt married Jane Brandon on Feb 26, 1809. I
was so excited that I almost danced a jig if I had known how.
Now another mystery pops up. Brandon doesn't sound very Welsh and Jane's
father is Patrick Brandon which is even less Welsh sounding.....so what is
as Irishman doing in Chepstow, Monmouthshire? I guess I will have to find
out. No help available from the census as these events took place in the
late 1780s and 90s. Anyone have any ideas? A puzzled but happy Nancy in
