Hi Mary!
The Canadian Museum of Civilization has put online a fascinating collection
of Canadian mail order catalogues. The catalogues span the years from 1880

Subject: [MON] Identifying photos and dress
Dear Listers,
Can I once more ask for your advice.
I number of photos have come my way which are definately or highly probably
members of my husband's Newbery family.
I wonder if anyone knows when certain photographers were in business as
dates may narrow the field. These are Harris and Co.88, High Street,
Merthyr, Newport:C , and HC Lee, Rhymney
Also I think the dress syles may also give a clue. Can anyone advise anyone,
or a website that might help here.
Best wishes,
Mary

I would contact the county public library and ask for a look up in the
city directories (phone books or business directories) during the
dates you are interested in.
Also, as for photo help, I would contact Maureen Taylor, the Photo
Detective...

Received this so passing it on in case it is of interest.
It may be of interest to your members to know that as part of the St Mary's Church Usk Open Day activities that the Church Registers are being made available for viewing in the Church on Saturday 30th June between 10.00am and 5.00pm.There is no charge, but a donations box will be available should anyone wish to make a contribution.Richard WelsfordChurch Warden

Don't forget the online wills at the national library of Wales. All free
access. I have found a few, however they are all older ones. What I found
most interesting was seeing the same names appear frequently as
benefactors...

Dear Ann,
Thank you for that. It would seem then that all the births were live births
followed by early deaths. So sad to think what the parents went through,
especially the poor mother.
Best wishes,
Mary

Dear Lyn,
Your suggestions make sense. If anyone knows which records may be helpful I
would be glad of any further suggestions. Meanwhile I will google!
Best wishes and thanks,
Mary

Dear Listers,
I have recently received probate information on a number of relatives courtesy of Marjorie, and I now need someone to remind me how I obtain the relevant wills.
A second, non connected question is regarding death information.
My husband's grandparents, living in Blaenavon in the early 20th century lost 5 of their 8 children. This seemed a very high rate for the time and I would like to know cause of death, but that is just a very high number of certificates to buy. Can anyone advise me if the registry office might be willing to disclose this information for a smaller fee. I don't need the certificates just the information ie premature birth, childhood disease, cot death. I know conditions in Blaenavon may have been poor and polluted but the level of deaths seems excessive. I know two were twins which may have been one reason.
Best wishes,
Mary
Hi
I have found when it comes to transcriptions, both are similar, and
sometimes one will find a particular entry that the other does not find, but
not much differences between them.
The actual scans of the census pages however is a little different. Where
comparisons of the two have been done, I have found that in almost all
cases, the Find My Past has the better census scans, especially on those
faint/hard to read pages.

I suggest you have a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/familyhistory/ and the
advice given in 'the basics' and then from there the piece 'To Pay or Not To
Pay? A guide to choosing genealogy sites on the internet -' at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhistory/get_started/paying_for_researc...
The advice there about getting a free trial if you can before committing
yourself may well be sensible. If you do so, make sure that you know how to
cancel it if need be, and choose your free trial at a time when you have
free time available to make the most of it, and all your outstanding queries
lined up so that you can get as much done as possible in the time.
If you are in UK you may well find that local libraries or archives will
allow you to use one or both of the major commercial providers, as they may
well have institutional subscriptions.
Some people prefer different sorts of search engine.
Familysearch now has quite a good name index to 1841 to 1911 censuses but
then you have to link to Findmypast to access the images.

As each transcription is different it is not easy to compare. I would say
that trying both would be useful to see which search method you prefer - you
don't need a subscription to search, just to see the transcripts and
original pages.
Don't forget thegenealogist as well. They also have the census online.
I tend to use Ancestry for census, FMP for other stuff and thegenealogist
not at all because I don't get on with their search engine.

I need to access the various census from 1841 to 1911 again but would
appreciate guidance on which sources (Ancestry, Find my--) are used by most
listers.
for 1841 to 1901 I prefer Ancestry because you can use more convoluted
search methods.
I need to access the various census from 1841 to 1911 again but would
appreciate guidance on which sources (Ancestry, Find my--) are used by
most listers.

That's most helpful, Nicola - many thanks. I have just tried to find a copy
available for sale via the Internet, but so far no success. If any Lister
could help me obtain a copy, or, failing that, perhaps let me have details
of the references to Rev. Thomas MORRIS in the book, I'd be most grateful.
Best regards

I am not sure about National Archives site but I think Ancestry now has these indexes up to 1966.
