CLERK ACQUITTED.-Ebbw Vale U.D.C.'S Methods Criticised.
Paul Joseph BRADLEY (32), a clerk, Ebbw Vale, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to
a charge of stolen the sum of £193. 9s., the moneys of the Ebbw Vale Urban
District Council between July 5 and September 28.
Mr. W. Henry WILLIAMS (instructed by Mr. W. A. JONES on behalf of the Ebbw
Vale U.D.C.) appeared to prosecute. Mr. A. Arthur WARREN, on the suggestion of
the chairman agreed to act for defence.
Mr. WILLIAMS said that prisoner was charged on ten counts with stealing
various sums of money from the council by whom he was employed.
He had been given various sums of money, with which to purchase insurance
stamps, but it was found that the workmen's cards had not been stamped. There
was a deficiency of £193. 9s.
For the defence it was stated that the duty of affixing the stamp was given to
any clerk in the office as the occaision arose, and that the stamps were at the
disposal of all the clerks.
Prisoner denied receiving any money to purchase stamps. The Chairman, Sir
Henry Mather JACKSON, Bart., pointed out to the jury that there was apparently a
want of business methods in the work. No doubt due to the temporary work thrown
upon the Council.
Prisoner was found not guilty and discharged.
MINER IN WHITE SHIRT.-Intimidation Charges At Swansea Assizes.
Cases of alleged intimidation and unlawful assembly were heard at Glamorgan
Assizes on Wednesday, before Mr. Justice WRIGHT.

on his bicycle when he saw David J. GRIFFITHS. GRIFFITHS took off his hat and
waved it, counsel suggested as a signal to the crowd of between 200 men and
women who were down the road. The crowd then barred EVANS path. The women joined
hands across the road, tied EVANS hands behind his back, and Mrs. COOMBES and
Mrs. Rosina THOMAS then passed then placed a white shirt on EVANS, who was then
paraded through the village as a blackleg and scab.
John Thomas EVANS, who said he was a colliery repairer, bore out the opening
statement.
Lord HALSBURY: Did they get the shirt on you ?
Witness: It was to small. (Laughter.)
Did they do anything to it ?-They ripped it and tied it round my neck.

At the second attempt, and typing in
"Monmouthshire" instead of

Hi Elwyn,
I've noticed your name on this forum over the years. To my knowledge I have no James relatives in Aberdare, sorry.
So far I have a direct line of James' from about 1750 to the present day living in Llanover, Goytre, Trevethin, Blaenavon & Mamhilid. That's not to say that any of their siblings and cousins didn't move elsewhere, because I know of many who did.
For example my grandfather moved with his family to the Yorkshire iron works, eventually finding his way back to Wales and settled down in Aberavon with his second family.
His first wife - the subject of the 1913 divorce - was a widow called Margaret Davies. She had two sons, I believe were called Daniel & Oliver.
I don't know if they took my garndfather's name, but he treated them as his and arranged apprenticeships at the dry docks in Aberavon.
I have no further information on these two.
I hope you find your links Elwyn. sometimes they are distant cousins and that's why I don't discount a link your your James'

John Patrick.
The transcriptions from John Patrick on the Monmouthshire list are all from
the 1920s editions of the Western Mail.
If you belong to Glamorgan FHS perhaps you could ask their secretary to find
a member who would search the 1913 local papers for a report about your
grandfather. This way they could also look at newspapers local to Swansea.
Belonging to the Family History Society closest to where your ancestors
lived is usually a very helpful thing. Even if you can't get to meetings
they have special services for their members that can give you so much
information.
