Hi Janet
What years were John and Margaret Agnes born? Where do they live in 1881? Do
they have other children and their dates of birth? This may help me to take
a look at them in the censuses and that might just help.
Regards
Dawn

Do you mean the 1881 census? There is a William WILLIAMS aged 77 living with Henry and Winifred but he is described as a lodger and no relationship is given. Profssion is general labourer.
By 1901, Henry DAVIES born c1818 is described as an army pensioner, living at Church Road, Redwick with his wife Winifred and a grandson William DAVIES aged 2.

As the list seems so quiet, I assume that everyone has some time on their
hands, (big grin), so I thought that I would post up my brick wall and hope
for some help.
MORGAN DAVIES was born 5/12/1868 in Monmouthshire (redwick/goldcliff area I
believe) he married LIZZIE NICHOLAS in 1890. After this the family
alternated between Neath and Redwick. I am looking for MORGANS family prior
to this marriage, ie his parents, and siblings.
As far as I know they are;
Father HENRY DAVIES born abt 1815
Mother WINIFRED nee WILLIAMS, born abt 1834
Brothers THOMAS b 1873, JOHN b 1875,
Sister SUSSANAH b 1878
On the census of 1901 a WILLIAM WILLIAMS, a Chelsea pensioner is living with
the family. I assume he is Winifred’s father.
I cant find any details on the siblings after the births from freeBMD, and
have no info on the parents of Morgan other than what is above, can anyone
fill in the blanks for me?
regards
mike doyle

Hi Mike
You can find some of the baptisms in Redwick on this site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/monfh.htm
Go to Transcripts and scroll down to Redwick.
There seem to be a couple of chn you don't have - Elizabeth and William
Henry. Also burials of Henry and Winifred are there.
Henry supposedly was born Christchurch but I couldn't find a baptism there.
Best of luck.

Gelli Unig Farm's still there I think. There's an aerial view of it on
Google Earth 51deg 37'34.51'' N and 3deg 07' 20.45'' W. Looks quite
substantial.
I did send this earlier but it didn't go through, anyway here it is again.
The trick is to look at the satellite view on Google.

Subject: RE: [MON] Roberts family of Pontywaun
Hi Anne
I've sent a map showing where Gelli Unig farm is located. If you type in
Gelli Unig Place on Google maps, then look at the satellite view, you can
see where it is. Access is via Silver Street then Hilary Rise. Also on the
maps you will see Trinity Congregational Church. There are a number of
graves in the church cemetery so you may find yours there. I'm not sure
where the records are for the church. I'll try and find out. As Barbara said
they may have been buried in Abercarn or Risca cemetery. These records are
held by Caerphilly County Borough Council. 01495 235189. They have
previously confirmed details of a burial when I had the name and date of
death.

Subject: [MON] Roberts family of Pontywaun
My great grandparents George Albert and Ann Roberts, were timber
merchants at Gelli Unig farm above
Pontywaun. George was born in 1850 in Newchurch East, Monmouthshire and
died in 1900 in Pontywaun.
Ann was born in 1853 in Mynyddislwyn. They were married May 5, 1872 in
St. Basil's parish church in
Bassaleg. My sister and I are planning a trip to Wales next May and hope
to visit the farm. I would like
to find the graves of any family members so we could visit them, too.
Can anyone tell me how I might
locate them. I have tried to find monumental inscriptions on line but
can't find anything for that area.
Any help would be much appreciated.

help ,regards LINDA
Hi Linda,
Located what I think is the right marriage,
Hilda E Summers Oct/Nov/Dec 1918 Gravesend
Walter James Scott Oct/Nov/Dec 1918 Gravesend.
Regards Barbara
Hi David,
I was unable to locate the farm on present day maps,I found it on the old
maps you mentioned in your reply to Anne, but there is no postal code for
the farm and there is no auto route either.
Maybe it's still there but present day maps not showing it.
Regards Barbara
Hello Anne,
The only placed names in Pontywaun are Gelli-Unig Place and Gelli-unig
Road, I can't locate any farm, possibly the farm is no longer there.
Above Pontywaun is Cwmcarn Forest Dive and Vistors Centre which is run by
Caerphilly County Borough Council and is open at certain times through the
year.
Burials may have taken place in Abercarn or Risca,
Regards Barbara

Dear Listers,
Those of you who enjoy exploring the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection'
on my website may like to know that at 8:30 pm this evening, the BBC4
television channel is showing the third programme in a series entitled
'Churches: How to Read Them'. The series is presented by Richard Taylor,
author of 'How to Read a Church - A Guide to Symbols and Meanings in
Churches and Cathedrals' (Rider, London, 2003; ISBN 1-8441-3053-3).
This evening's episode is entitled: "How churches were designed to give
medieval people a way to 'escape' death".
The first two episodes are available to view (probably UK only) via the BBC
website:
Episode 1 - "How churches were originally intended to protect the altar and
the rite of the Eucharist"
Episode 2 - "How and why parish churches played a crucial role in the
everyday life of the Middle Ages"
See http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tnp8f
Incidentally, I'm currently working on the next subject to be added to the
'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection': St David's Church, Llanddew,
Breconshire and the nearby Bishop Gower's Well and Bishop's Palace, a
favourite residence of Geraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales) in the 12th
Century.
The 'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection' is at

Neil Milkins is shortly filming for a one hour documentary on the unsolved murders of eight women in the Hammersmith district of London between 1959 and 1965. It will feature Abertillery born Harold Jones the killer of two Abertillery schoolchildren in 1921.The documentary is part of eight one hour episodes of Fred Dineage's Crime Stories. The programme will be aired throughout Britain and Europe on the History Channel (Crime and Investigation Channel) in April 2011. The presenter expert is Britain's top criminologist, professor David Wilson.
Thanks Jeff.
My Mum used to take me to "The Ton" when I was very small as several
relatives lived there. My Granny used to work at the household of Disraeli
and apparently also did some kind of work at Castell Coch. THOMAS and BRIDGE
were the main surnames.
If you are a local, do you know if Mynachdy Cottage/s still exist? My Uncle
George used to live there. That's not too far away I believe but my
geography of Cardiff is not very good.
Gosh, I had more or less forgotten the shale lorries but you are right, they
did thunder along small roads at tremendous pace. We used to have to jump
into the hedges or ditches when they passed. We had a couple of shale lorry
drivers living near us and their children came to the school where I taught.
Didn't stay long though, just passing through. That would be around 1960/62?
