I am trying to learn more about a GRIFFITHS family who moved from
Montgomeryshire to Monmouthshire about 1850. One of the sons, John Rowland
GRIFFITHS, is supposed to have owned the tin plate works at Tintern, near
Chepstow. Does anyone know anything about this family? I am hoping to find
out who John's parents might be, as well as his brothers who, I think, were
Thomas and James. Thomas is said to have run the New Inn in Penydarren,
Merthyr Tydfil about the turn of the century. Anything will help, any clues
at all. Thanks, Helen Whyte.

Inspector Edwin Charles DEW, who for upwards of 38 years had been in the employ of the Taff Vale Railway and subsequently the Great Western Railway, died on Monday after a brief illness. He began his railway career at Porth as a porter and later became brakesman and afterwards guard. Later he was promoted to the posistion of inspector at Trehafod Junction, and more recently removed to Pontypridd as railway platform inspector. He was held in the highest esteem by his colleagues. He was an active member for upwards of 30 years and took a special interest in the welfare of the orphan fund of the railwaymen's organisation. He is survived by a widow and one daughter. The interment will take place on Thursday in Glyntaff Cemetery.
A veteran of the Welsh Congregational movement passed away at his residence, Bryngole, Llanon, Carmarthenshire, on Monday in the Rev. Thomas WILLIAMS.
Mr. WILLIAMS, who had been in failing health for some considerable time past, was in his eighty-third year. A native of Llanon, Carmarthenshire, he was ordained pastor of his church, Llwynteg. Llanon, and subsequently became pastor of Soar Welsh Congregational Church, Clydach Vale, where he ministered for 25 years. Meanwhile, the cause at Clydach Vale developed to such an extent that Soar is now regarded as one of the most flourishing churches in the denomination.
Gosen Congregational Church, Clydach Vale, is a daughter church of Soar, and Mr. WILLIAMS held the pastorate of both until Gosen was strong enough to maintain her own pastor. He took a prominent part in the religious and public life of the Rhondda and for many years was a member of the old Ystradyfodwg School Board. Failing health eventually caused him to resign, and he left Soar one of the strongest churches in Wales. Since his retirement he has been actively assisting weak churches in the neighbourhood of his home.
He is survived by his widow, a son, Mr. R. R. WILLIAMS, deputy-director of education for the Rhondda Urban District Council, and a daughter, Miss M. H. WILLIAMS, head teacher of the Clydach Vale School.
The doyen of newspaper men in South Wales has just passed away at Swansea in the person of Mr. William MANSEL, for many years manager and part owner of the "Cambrian" newspaper. Mr. MANSEL, who was 90 years of age , died at his residence in Westbury-street, where he had been in failing health for the past few years. He lived through a period in which newspaper work on old weekly journal lines was a different thing from the journalistic business of to-day. When the "Cambrian" was disposed of Mr. MANSEL retired from a business in which he was apprenticed when thirteen years of age. He subsequently owned the "Swansea Journal," which he disposed of to the "Western Mail" proprietors, who carried it on for a time. Up to the time of his death he was, by courtesy, appointed annually ale taster to the Duke of Beaufort's Court Leet.
Mr. MANSEL was for many years one of the best known figures in the town life of Swansea, and his sociable nature and personal charm endeared him to a host of people, most of whom, however, have long preceded him.
Information has been received at Swansea of the death at Milwaukee, U.S.A., of Mrs. PROTHEROE, wife of Dr. Dan PROTHEROE, the Welsh-American composer. She was on a visit at Milwaukee from her home at Chicago, and succumbed to heart failure, at the age of 57.
Mrs. PROTHEROE was a member of a New Tredegar family who emigrated to America when she was a child. She took an active interest in her husband's work, and was with him at the Swansea National Eisteddfod last August.

A fine of £20 was inflicted at Swansea Police-court on Monday on John RAYSON, a butcher, of 288, Neath-road, Landore, for what the Bench described as one of the worst cases of cruelty to a horse they had before them.
Police-constable DAVIES said that as defendant drove the horse down Neath-road he beat it furiously for a long distance. When stopped the horse was covered with foam and was trembling and bleeding from cuts on the legs. Defendant said he beat the horse because it bolted.
The Chairman (Mr. R.W. JONES) told defendant they did not want to send him to prison but would fine him £20.
Defendant: It is the first time your worship.
The Chairman: It is the worst case we have ever sat upon; you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
William John PRICE, The Latt, Neath, was fined £1 at the borough court for selling coal and having no labels or weighing-machine.
Pleading guilty of a charge of bigamy, Herbert BOND, of Greenhill, Swansea, was committed for trial from the local police-court on Monday.

John Patrick.
I received this email from FamilySearch several days ago after I
inquired about why they had taken off the Monmouth parish registers
from Record Search:
On May 11, 2010, the Wales Gwent / Monmouth collections were removed
from Record Search to honor our contractual agreement with the record
custodians which states that the records must be hosted on a site that
contains a registration process. These records will be loaded onto the
new FamilySearch website when at a future date, at which time the
images will be available to registered users.
I think this clears things up and hope that they will be added again soon.

Hi
I am a newbie to this list having just begun researching some families in Wales.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction for finding an obituary in the newspaper for a person who died in Newport in 1935. Also cemeteries/cemetery records in Newport for the same time.
Many thanks.
Vivian

Hi Vivian,
Depends if it was placed in the newspaper, some newspapers are searchable
at Gwent Records Office but I think you have to search the look-up yourself.
Burial Records not sure about them, depends where the burial took place,
contact Gwent Records Office on 01633 644886.
And it maybe easier if you google Gwent Records Office and look at their
website and contact them by email.

Considerable excitement prevailed at Rhymney last night. A large crowd estimated between 500 and 700 people congregated outside the home of Henry Edgar LEWIS, of Jerusalem-street, Rhymney, and remained there many hours.
It appears that LEWIS is an official employed at the new collieries at Trelewis, intended to go to work and the crowd objected and assumed a very menacing attitude. So serious was the position regarded to be that extra police were drafted into the district under Supt.EDWARDS, Tredegar; Inspector HUMPHREYS, New Tredegar; and Inspector John CLINCH Pontlottyn.
The crowd remained outside the man's house until 10.30 p.m., when he intimated to them that he would not go to work. The crowd then dispersed.
