My mother attended Bolt Street School in the late 1920s early 1930s. I remember her having a photo of her class but the photo disappeared when she moved house just before she died.
I would be very grateful if anyone on the list could tell me if and where it might be possible to find any class ( or school ) photos of Bolt Street from that time.
After leaving school she went to work at Lovell's Factory - please could anyone tell me whereabouts in Newport the factory was. She lived in Lewis Street at the time so I wonder whether it was near there.
Many thanks,
Sue Irvine.
Welsh WW1Prisoners in a POW camp
This is an item of interest to anyone who had a relative who was taken
prisoner in the Great War. I have a photo of 23 prisoners from Wales taken
in a POW camp in Minden, Germany, during 1918 and someone on the list may
recognise one of these as one of their relatives.
My grandfather's brother, Thomas Williams, from Penmachno, was a tailor with
H R Davies, Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, when he enlisted in December 1915.
He was injured in August 1916 and came back for hospital treatment but
returned to France again in 1917 only to be shot and captured during the
Battle of Cambrai at the end of November 1917. He was taken to a POW camp
in Minden and I have a number of photos taken inside the camp.
The most remarkable photo is that of 23 prisoners with the caption "Some
jolly boys of Wales". This postcard was sent to my mother, aged 9 at the
time, on 18 May 1918. I assume that this card was also sent to at least 22
other families in Wales. The photo can be seen by visiting
http://blogs.caernarfonherald.co.uk/hywelroberts/ where you can also read
more about Thomas Williams in the Great War.
Does anyone else have a copy of this postcard? Does anyone recognise a
relative in the photo?

Thanks John. Wonderful photos, and an interesting discussion of the
purpose and origin of the stone tower.

Hello again Listers,
I am re-newing my search for WATERS/WALTERS and hoping somebody can look at
Parish Registers for me, starting with ABERTSTRUTH. My 3xGrtGrandmother,
Sarah WATERS was , according to her Death Cert in Australia, born in
Abergavenny; the informant stated that her parents were John & Martha and
that John was a farmer.
Date from other legal documents indicate a birth date around 1815. The
difficulty with this information is firstly, Sarah's birth not on
Abergavenny baptisms online and I can't locate a John & Martha match;
possible therefore, informant error on names, also birth could have been in
Abergavenny (or 'hundred of Abergavenny')with baptism elsewhere. I have also
found the names WATERS/WALTERS occasionally used for either.
Sarah definitely lived in Brecon and was tried there in the name of WATERS
and transported in 1833. Her parents may have emigrated from a Border County
for the Iron Ore & Coal, so may not be a marriage for them in Wales - I
found a JOHN WATERS on Llanelly Burials in November, 1826 - abode Bryn
Mawr, aged 33yrs. There was also a baptism in Llanelly in 1817 for a Sarah
WALTERS to John & Sarah.
I just hope that somewhere on a Parish Register there might be some details
that actually match and this quest can be finalised. Your help will be
sincerely appreciated.
Kind regards,
Dawn Stanton (Tasmania)

When a mother was summoned at Newport on Wednesday for neglecting to send her
child to school she offered the excuse that the child had no boots.
Mr. Fred BIRT, superintendent attendance officer, said that in one district in
the town about 100 children attended school without boots and came to no harm.
That he was starving and wanted to get locked up was the excuse put forward by
James GARRITY (61), an unemployed seaman, when arrested on a charge of causing
damage to the plate-glass window of 93, Cowbridge-road, Cardiff, a boot shop in
the occupation of Mr. George OLIVER.
Before the Cardiff justices on Wednesday it was stated that GARRITY put his foot
through the window and then fell to the ground. He had been drinking. The amount
of the damage was £9 15s.
"I don't remember anything about it," said GARRITY when asked if he had anything
to say. He was sent to prison for fourteen days.

lives.
Mr. GIBBY is now on a voyage from Norfolk, U.S.A., to the Argentine on the
steamer Brookvale, owned by the Rhondda Steamship Company. Mrs. GIBBY, his
mother, told a Western Mail reporter on Wednesday evening that her son had
written telling her that he was about to join the Eastway on her last trip when
"a foreboding came over him," and he did not accompany his colleagues.
Whilst the Eastway was sinking in the storm the Brookvale was also fighting the
same hurricane many miles away.
