Western Mail Saturday June 7th 1924.
Gilbert MACEY, the young Gilfach collier, who is in custody on a charge of attempting to murder his sweetheart, Harriet MARTIN, of 16, Ash-street, Gilfach Goch, was brought before Mr. J.W. RICHARDS at Tonypandy on Friday and formally remanded until Thursday next.
Late on Friday night the girl was reported to be going on as well as could be expected.
As already reported it is alleged that MACEY attacked the girl in the street on Thursday and wounded her in the neck.
Dr. D. Naunton MORGAN, who attended to her injuries, inserting seventeen stitches, is not without hope as to her ultimate recovery.
Later reports show that MACEY and the girl met in Ash-street at about 1.30.p.m.
After they had had a brief conversation, the man, it is alleged, attacked the young woman, and afterwards ran to his lodgings and thence to the police-station, where he suurended himself to Police-constable LLOYD.
A large crowd assembled almost immediately outside the girl's house, and, it is said, displayed a marked hostility towards MACEY.
When Police-sergeant DAVIES arrived at Ash-street just after the alleged attack he found Miss MARTIN in the kitchen of her home with a gaping wound in the throat.
Our Rhondda reporter was informed that MACEY and Miss MARTIN had been very much attached to each other, and broke off their engagement only on Saturday last.
MACEY is a native of Bristol, and came to Gilfach five years ago. He lodged at 14, Ash-street, which is occupied by Mrs. Ethel EDWARDS, and worked as a haulier at the Glenavon Colliery. The girl's parents have lived in the Gilfach Goch locality for many years.
That the husband's temperament was one of extreme jealousy and that he had deserted his young wife on four or five occaisions since May last, was the declaration of Mr. J.H. Lewis MANNING, solicitor, Barry, who represented, at Barry Police-court on Friday Milda BURNISTON, who sought a maintenance order, alleging that her husband, Louis BURNISTON, had deserted her.
Applicant said that when leaving a picture house with a Miss COLES and her fiance she saw her husband, who, addressing the man, demanded a reason of his being with his (BURNISTON'S) wife. A quarrel commenced , and a policeman was called. BURNISTON departed from the scene for his home at 26, Basset-street, Barry Dock, by himself.
When witness reached the house she discovered the door locked. Knocking failed to bring a response until her husband shouted, "Clear out. There is no home for you here!" Later he agreed to allow her in the house for the night on the understanding that she would go in the morning. On the following morning defendant turned her out, and she went to live with her mother.
Dr. P.J. O'DONNELL (the presiding magistrate) said that the bench thought her husband should have another chance and adjourned the case for a month.
Mr.J.B. Price HUGHES, a solicitor, said BURNISTON, for whom he appeared, was quite willing to take back his wife, and would offer her a home in his father's house.
The wife, at this stage, burst into tears, exclaiming that there was no room there for her. They have no love for me or my children, and that's the truth, sirs," she sobbed.
Welsh Successes in Grocers Examination.
The following candidates were successful in the recent examination held under the auspices of the Institute of Certified Grocers:- H. JONES, (Bridgend);- H. JONES, (Bridgend); F.C. HEARN, G.R.LOWE, W.C. KNIGHT, T.M. WILLIAMS, and W. JONES; (Cardiff); H.F. SEYMOUR, (Cilfynydd), Thomas JOHN, (Glanaman), H.A.W.C. HUDSON, (Pentre), Muriel G. WORTHING, (Rhayader), and W. STEPHENS, (St. Clears).
Mr. W.A. JONES, Ebbw Vale, at the Blaina Police-court on Friday made an application for ejectment which illustrated the extraordinary housing shortage existing in the Blaina and Nantyglo areas. The applicant was Richard HOWELL, owner of the house, and the tenant Job WEEKS.
Mr. JONES said they desired to convert two houses , Nos. 22 and 24, Wesley-buildings, Nantyglo, into one house. Mr. HOWELL'S wife was an invalid, and a married dayghter had to live on the premises to do her housework. There were living in one house of four rooms Mr and Mrs HOWELL and their family of six children (sons aged 30, 26, 20, and 17 years, and daughters aged ten and nine years), together with a married daughter, her husband, and two children- a total of twelve.
Mr. HOWELL stated that there was only one living room in this house for all twelve of them, and one of the two rooms downstairs had to be used as a bedroom.
The Bench made an order for ejectment, but suspended it for two months, the Chairman (Mr. W. GREGSON) strongly advising WEEKS to get out in that time.
Mr. Alfred BILLINGHAM retired from active membership of the firm of T.B. and S. BATCHELOR and Co. (Limited), timber merchants, Newport, after 62 years' connection with it . At the annual meeting of the firm on Friday Mr. W.F. DAWSON, chairman of the company, presented Mr. BILLINGHAM, on behalf of the firm, with a gold watch. Mr. BILLINGHAM retains his office as a director of the company.

Western Mail Saturday June 7 1924.
"In my opinion it is a sensless thing to prosecute a man of 89 years of age," was a remark made by the Merthyr Stipendiary (Mr. R.A. GRIFFITH) on Friday during the hearing of a few summonses brought by the Great Western Railway Company.
The aged defendant referred to was Henry JAMES, who, together with two other Tirphil men, Griffith JONES, and Joseph DAVIES, was proceeded against for having had in his possession wooden fence-rails belonging to the railway company. The value of the rails was 14s.9d.
Mr.S.G. ROWE (Paddington) was the prosecuting solicitor.
At the suggestion of the stipendiary the summons against the old man,
JAMES, was withdrawn. The two younger defendants were bound over each on the payment of 7s.6d. costs.
Mr William Lawrey TREVORROW, of Alma Cottage, Ebbw Bridge, near Newport, retired master mariner, who died on March 30, left estate of the gross value of £1,361, of which £785 is net personalty. Probate of the will, dated April 7, has been granted to his daughter Mrs. Wilhelmina Laurie HILLIER, to whom he left all his property absolutely.
"In my opinion a fine would be totally inadequate penalty for an assault like this, and you will go to prison for a month," said the Cardiff Stipendiary (Mr. W.St.John FRANCIS-WILLIAMS) on Friday to William WADSWORTH, haulier, who was summoned by John A.STILL for assault.
Mr.H.G.W. SAUL prosecuted.
Prosecutor explained that he was secretary of the Mynachdy Allotment Holders' Association. On May 17 he saw WADSWORTH attack a man named GLANVILLE, the assistant secretary. Witness went over to quell the disturbance and was set upon by defendant and received several punches about the face. WADSWORTH had a horse and lorry in the road running through the allotment, although he had no right to be there.
Court-inspector D.J. FRANCIS read a long list of previous convictions against WADSWORTH. The offences included assault, stealing, cruelty to a horse, and false pretences.
WADSWORTH made a tearful appeal for a fine when he was led to the cells.
"I hope that this will be a warning to you and others. Let there be some honour among working men. It is a serious thing to rob your neighbour." It was in this way that Mr. Joseph COWLING (chairman of magistrates) at Newport Police-court on Friday addressed Henry PARSONS, a furnaceman, of Barrack-Hill, who was fined 20s. for having stolen two broccoli from an allotment garden at the back of his house. Defendant had strenuously denied the offence.
Charged on Friday before the Merthyr magistrates with having loitered in Bailey-street, Deri, for the purpose of betting Sydriel Edwin RICHARDS, a Blackwood carpenter, admitted that he had acted as a bookmaker's runner. But he declared that he had given up the job a few days prior to his capture by Police-sergeant THOMAS, because he had been driven to the conclusion that there "was nothing in it."
Sergeant THOMAS said that cash totalling £7.1s. 5 1/2d. was found on RICHARDS, and betting slips, apart from other racing literature.
Mr. C.S. GOODFELLOW (Cardiff and Caerphilly) for the defence, said that the two pieces of paper alleged to be betting were merely records of private wagers laid by his client with a bookmaker.
A fine of £10, or 31 days' imprisonment, was imposed.

Western Mail Saturday June 7th 1924.
Considerable mystery surrounds the disappearance from his home on Wednesday last of Mr. Arthur GOODFELLOW, a well-known haulage contractor, whose home is at 251, Cowbridge-road, Canton, Cardiff.
Mr. GOODFELLOW, who is 34 years of age, left the house early on Wednesday morning, and was seen to go in the direction of Victoria Park, but since then he has completely disappeared, and the efforts of the police and relatives to trace him have proved fruitless.
In the course of an interview with a Western Mail representative Mrs GOODFELLOW stated that her husband had been considerably worried of late, and she expressed the fear that he might have lost his memory and is now wandering about the country. Mr and Mrs GOODFELLOW have lived for several years in British Columbia, Canada, and the missing man has been eager to get back there. This fact has led to a belief that he may have either succeeded in obtaining a boat for Canada or America, or have taken a "pierhead jump." In view of this last-named contigency Mrs. GOODFELLOW would be grateful if officials of Seamen's Unions who may have transacted signing-on business with a man answering his description would communicate with her.
Mr. GOODFELLOW is a member of a well-known Cardiff family, and during the war served with an anti-aircraft battery in France. When he left the house on Wednesday he was wearing a blue suit, a navy blue overcoat, khaki shirt, with soft collar and dark tie, a fawn cap, and brown shoes. He is 5ft. 9 1/2 inches in height, has blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion.
Head and shoulder photo on page 8.
Mr. John HARBOTTLE,aged 43, the licensee of the Vulcan Inn, Dock-street, Newport, was fatally injured in a motor-car collision on the Cardiff-Newport road.
He was returning from Cardiff in a motor-car owned and driven by Mr David JONES, of the Navigation Hotel, Crumlin.
At Maesglas Mr. JONES' car ran into the rear of a lorry owned by Messrs. Robert Wynn and Sons, of Newport. At the time the lorry was stationary.
