Mr. E.A. CHARLES protested at the meeting of the Newport Town Council, against the recommendation to appoint the Town Clerk as clerk to the assessment committee (under the Rating and Valuation Act) at a salary of £100 a year. This, he said, was not the time to give an increase to an official whose salary already would be £1,200 per annum on January next. The new committee would not function until April next, and he moved an amendment that the motion be not adopted.
Mr. W.H.B. WILLIAMS seconded, and said it was a case of "to him that hath shall be given and he shall have in abundance."
Ultimately the recommendation was carried on the understanding that the additional salary would not commence until April 1 next.
The assessment committee was appointed as follows:-
Alderman T. PARRY and Councillors, LINTON, RAIKES, CLISSITT, CROWTHER, and Mrs. Ann A. JONES, Messrs. L.H. HORNBY, W.T. DUKE-WILLIAMS, and W. MORDAY, were appointed as outside members, and the Guardians have been asked to name three members.

Hello John.
Can you point me in the right direction please, a item in vol 4 issue 372
from Glenda Brothers made mention of "Blainavon Baptisms 1814 - 1837" is
there a internet site to access these records? If not how can I (living in
Australia) access them?
And wishing you and yours a Happy Christmas.
Roy
Hi Roy,
Not John replying but am able to point you to these transcripts. I think Glenda was probably referring to Mike John's web page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/monfh.htm
If you scroll down the page, you will see Monmouthshire Parish Records and Blaenafon is in there.
Mike is possibly the most knowledgeable and prolific genealogist in Monmouthshire and, with the help of his list members, has put together the information on his web page. Because different people have done the transcriptions, the data is not all presented in the same way.

Found last Friday evening lying bleeding at the foot of the staircase, Kenneth MERINER, a master mariner, of 151, North-road, Gabalfa, Cardiff, who, for the last two years had been suffering from valvular paralysis, died within a few hours from fracture of base of the skull. When the attention of the police was directed to a disturbance in St. John's Square Cardiff on Friday afternoon, a woman smashed several panes of glass in a tram-car on The Hayes. The woman used a flagon as a weapon of destruction, but the temper of the crowd prevented a young policeman arresting her. She was taken into custody on Monday, on appearing before the local magistrates proved to be Ellen O'BRIEN 49. She pleaded guilty to causing the damage, and was sentenced to a month with hard labour.
Lengthy details of a afray at Ely between a party of civilians, a young Policeman, and a special constable were given to the Cardiff magistrates on Monday.
