Abergavenny Junction railway station served the town of Abergavenny in
Monmouthshire. At the junction of lines run by two different railway

History
Opened by the West Midlands Railway, the station became the GWR / LNWR

Railway for financial reasons and to expand into Wales. Therefore it
became a partly London, Midland and Scottish Railway and Great Western

closed by the British Transport Commission.

Hi Jon
Thank you for replying.
I think you are right about one dieing and a second named the same,
probably because it was the father's name.
It looks like sending for the death cert (Jun qtr 1864) would be worth it.
Bevan is such a common name!
I just don't understand why finding the parents, has turned out to be so difficult.
I've been going nuts over the parents (and junior) for a few years now.
It is a great help knowing someone out there is also trying to help,
or at least point me in the right direction.
Thank you

Hi Angela,
It sounds as if the 2 children were of the same family, one Walter died, the
next son was named Walter as well.
There are 2 births registered for Walter Bevan in Bedwellty in Mar qtr 1863,
but there is also this death:
Deaths Jun 1864
Bevan Walter Bedwelty 11a 65
Maybe the one from the same family born 1863? Could well be worth getting
that death cert to confirm either way.
Best wishes,
Jon
Dear List members,
My 3x great grandmother was Elizabeth Watkins, the daughter of John and
Elizabeth Watkins. She married William Jenner in Brighton in 1819. In
the various censuses that followed, Elizabeth was described as having
been born in Monmouth. In the 1841 census John and Elizabeth Watkins
and William and Elizabeth Jenner were all living in Lewes, Sussex. By
the 1851 census, both Elizabeth Watkins and William Jenner had died.
The birth places of Elizabeth Jenner (nee Watkins) was recorded as
Monmouth, and of John Watkins, Lingal, Monmouthshire (at least that is
what it looks like). Unfortunately, John died in 1853 so I have no
other lead on his birthplace. At each census, the age given for
Elizabeth Jenner nee Watkins suggests that she was born about 1802,
while her father should have been born about 1772.
I cannot find any locality looking like "Lingal" in Monmouthshire. Does
that name ring any bells?
Does anyone have a Watkins family who match the above facts and who
might have moved to Sussex between 1802 and 1819?
Greetings from Brisbane in Australia

Hello lister's, I'm hoping that someone can help me with my Walter Bevan, please.
The details on his death cert (I know it is the correct cert) are:
When and where died: 21 Dec 1940, On a footbridge near the Gantra Ebbw Vale
Age: 76
Occupation: A retired locomotive engine driver, Late of 8 Sycffos Ebbw Vale
Cause of death: Shock and Haemorrhage following injuries sustained by a fall accelerated by exposure. Accident P.M
Signature, description and residence of informant: Certificate received from W.R. Daurcey Coroner for Monmouthshire Abegavenny District. Inquest held 24 Dec 1940
When registered: 26 Dec 1940
Marriage cert for Walter (I also know this is the right one):
2 Feb 1896
Groom: Walter Bevan, Age 28, Bachelor, Locomotive Engine Driver, Georgetown Tredegar, Father name Walter Bevan, Labourer
Bride: Catherine Sheen, Age 19, Spinster, North Lane Tredegar, (There is No father's name) But I know her mother was Ellen Sheen and she married Patrick Flynn after Catherine was born.
Walter and Catherine married in the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Crickhowell county of Brecon (this will be the Catholic Church in Dukestown Tredegar.
In the presence of us: Thomas Welsh and Annie Welsh
I phoned the Tredegar Registra's who where very helpful, and the result was the following birth cert for Walter (junior)
Born: 16 Feb 1863
Father: Walther Bevan, Rail Man
Mother: Margaret Bevan formerly Rowlands
Informant:Margaret Bevan mother Union Street Tredegar
When Registered: 11 March 1863
I'm not sure if this is the right birth cert. Someone else came up with another birth cert with the same details but the date was 12 March 1865!
Also I cannot find a marraige for Walter (senior) and Margaret Rowlands (on freebmd)
I have Walter (junior) and Catherine on the 1901 with children living at 27 3rd Row Georgetown Tredegar.
And I have Catherine (unmarried) on the 1881 living at Red Lion Square Tredegar.
Is it possible to obtained a copy of the Coroner's report for Walter (junior)? And if so from where please?
Any help with finding Walter and his parents on any census, or a marriage or deaths for is parents would be appreciated.
A member of the family heard that Walter (junior) had sister's that were governesses in Rhymney, but I'm not sure how true this is.
I'm sorry for this being such a long post. I just thought that the more details I include the more chance there would be of getting help with this family.
Thank you for reading this, hoping to hear from someone
Regards
Angela
Hello Eric,
I agree it looks like Lingal and I'm sorry I can't help with that. What
interests me is the Monmouthshire / Lewes connection. In my tree I have a
Richard PHILLIPS born in Lewes in 1803. By 1806 his parents Richard and
Susannah were in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire where a removal order was made
in respect of Susannah's illegitimate daughter Ann DUNFORD sending her back
to Lewes. I suspect Richard senior was born in Abergavenny and I have found
a probable baptism. Whilst checking the Abergavenny records I also spotted
the following baptism:
1 May 1810 Elizth (born at Lewes 13 Aug 1805) d/o ye above Edward & Mary
WATERS, Monk Street.
So, there definitely seems to be some migration between Abergavenny & Lewes.
I would be interested if anyone can suggest a reason. I have wondered
whether it has anything to do with the fact that the principle estate of the
Lords Abergavenny is in Sussex. Did people move from working on one estate
to another?
If you look at Abergavenny baptisms for the 1770s you will find plenty of
WATKINS but it is a common surname. However, the following might be of
interest:
23 May 1773 John s/o John & Mary WATKINS, Mill Street.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/abergavenny/ba
ps07/aberbaps158.jpg
I know it doesn't explain "Lingal" but it's a reference that might be worth
filing away.
Regards,
Molly

Dear Eric
It does indeed look like Lingal, and John is shown as John Watkin not Watkins. Bearing in mind he was elderly, and perhaps had a Welsh accent, maybe the enumerator had difficulty in taking down the correct place of birth. Could it be Llangattock Lingoed?
Kind regards

Dear Listers,
I noticed the newspaper obituary yesterday of Peter Clement Bartram, the
highly respected genealogist who was particularly famed for his research
into the genealogies of old Welsh families.
Amongst his published works were: 'Welsh Genealogies AD 300-1400'; 'Welsh
Genealogies AD 1400-1500'; and 'Early Welsh Genealogical Tracts'.
Dr Bartram was in his 101st year.
His obituary is accessible on-line at http://tinyurl.com/3fooey

Hi Sandra
I have Hyatt ancestors in Pontypool Monmouthshire from around 1850 forwards
after my gg grandfather Ezra (Israel) Hyatt left home in Corsley, Wiltshire.
I believe his branch of the Hyatt family had been in the Corsley area for
generations (with all the variant spellings you might expect!). Many of
them seem to have been craftsmen, blacksmiths, weavers, shoemakers etc.

I am trying to find the parents of Hannah Pitt born around 1843 in Monmouthshire, England. Her death certificate in Australia lists her father as William Pitt after first recording that her father was unknown. I tend to look at this record as perhaps not all that reliable because of that. Her age at the time of death was given as 84 which would give her a brith year of 1842 or there abouts. There is a Hannah Pitt christened in 1844 to James Pitt and Delila Unknown. Interestingly her eldest Daughter had as one of her names Delila so I feel that there has to be some family connection there as Delila is not that common a name. Hope that someone can help me. I am also looking for a marraige to George William Owen. I do not know if she married in Britain before leaving for South Australia or whether she met and married on arrival. Cheers and thanks for looking. Pat
