EARLY AND LATE TRAINS
by ISLWYN (The Rev. William Thomas)
1832-1878, Ynysddu, Monmouthshire
Traveller of a single day,
Only wait a later train!
Mortal, why should'st thou complain
When beloved ones go away?
Travelling,in a later train,
Thou shalt join thy friends again.
When beloved friends depart
Why should sorrow plough thy heart?
They've but had the start of thee
Travelling to Eternity.
They have left this world of pain
Only by an earlier train.
We shall soon all pass away:
Life is but a Winter's day.
We may well afford to wait,
For the last shall not be late.
Some at glaring noontide leave,
Others tarry till the eve;
Some go early, some go late,
But the last may gladly wait.
For 'tis but a little way,
But a curve or two again,
Ere we reach the eternal plain
By the dim-lit midnight train.
Brighter shall the eternal day
Shine, benighted,ones, on ye;
And the longer the delay
Greater shall the welcome be.
Thou shalt join the happy band,
Thou shalt meet thy friends again
in the ever-blooming land,
Only by a later train.
Thou shalt realise above
All was but the work of love;
Thou shalt call each death again
Leaving by an earlier train.

I am new to this list and I wonder if anyone has come across any of the
following names or could add any further information to that I have already
found please.
I am researching Ann and Alice Leary (or O'Leary) and trying to find out
about their brother John and any other siblings as I think that there was a
daughter Catherine too, but I can't find what happened to them.
Ann and Alice were found in the Workhouse School in Caerleon in the census
of 1871 (aged 7 and 9 years) and later in 1881 in Hereford in Bartestree
Convent. I think that John (and Catherine) may have been older than the
girls and perhaps too old to go to the school so I don't know where they
were during this time but the children all seem to have been well educated
even though the parents weren't able to write as their marriage certificate
bears an X where their names should have been!
I know that John was in Kent in 1881 as he sent a book of poetry to Alice
for Christmas signing it your loving brother John and the complimentary slip
with the book shop's name is still inside the book.
I have found the parents from Ann's birth certificate and they are Richard
Leary (and according to the marriage certificate his father was John Leary -
farm labourer - deceased) and Bridget Sullivan (widow) nee Roach whose
father was a Master Tailor (David Roach - also deceased in 1857) and their
address at the time of marriage (18th Jan 1857) was Oliver Square, Newport
(not sure if I have read correctly the handwriting on the certificate). They
married in St Mary's Church in Stow Hill. Richard Leary was noted as a Black
Smith's striker and I am curious as to where he would possibly have been
working as such and could it have been in the Iron Works in Newport,
perhaps?
I think that I found the same Richard Leary on the 1851 census as a soldier
based in Newport Military Barrack, b Kantnek, Cork, Ireland. The age of this
Richard Leary would match that of the one on the marriage certificate.*
*I know that Ann married Joseph Niven and went to the States - Alice married
Alfred Cale (Ledbury, Hereford) about 1887. Alice and Alfred lived in the
Pontypool area and had four children that I know of but it is thought that
there were more who died in infancy. The children were Ethel Amelia Cale,
Gladys Elizabeth, Annie Cecilia and Alice Kathleen. Alice died in 1912 in
Pontypool Workhouse and Alfred went to Llanelli where he died in 1928 in the
workhouse (which may have become a part of the hospital at that time). Three
of his daughters went to Llanelli with him but the youngest one went to the
USA with her Aunt Annie where she lived and died at the age of 101 years in
2007.
I would also like to find out more information on the Master Tailor - David
Roach but I am not sure where to look. Was there a list of Master Tailors?
He may have been from Ireland. Any information at all would be helpful and
being pointed in the right direction to look for records. Ann and Joseph
Niven also kept an Inn or tavern, or public house, in Newport before they
went to the USA - how would I find any record of this? I believe that it
would be in the mid 1880s, it may possibly have been in Blaenavon as that
was the address they used when they went to the States.
Many thanks,
Sue Jennings

Hello
I am not really sure where these names fit in my family - I got them from my
mother in law, and unfortunately the notes are pretty basic. Other names
that could be involved are Haine, Evans, Ball - maybe Samuel Ball born mid
1890's Stourpaine, Dorset. I think these families are also associated with
Llandegveth (sp probably very wrong!!) certainly my grandfather mentioned
Llandeveth before it was flooded.
If anyone has any ideas - signposts, I'd love to hear from you.

Can any one help me, I am after anything pertaining to my ancestors, David
Powell where and date unknown, son of Henry and Sarah Powell, David married
Miriam Moses Jul. 8 1846 The Parish Church Llanelly, Brecon. Miriam was born
Dec.8 1824 F----thyard, Wales, they had one child (I think) Miriam born 1847
Pontypool. David died (whereabouts and date unknown) prior to Miriam's
marriage Oct. 14 1876 to William George Norris in Swindon. William (known as
George) and Miriam were my Grandparents whom I never knew. Any information
would be gratefully received. Roy Norris in Australia
I am working on the details of my descent from Joseph Davies (and wife
Jane) a nineteenth century shoemaker in Newport. His surviving children
with birth dates were
Sarra A Davies 1861,
David T Davies 1865, = Tom Adair
William E Davies 1867,
Wyndham Davies 1871 (my grandfather who married the daughter of the
daughter of Edward Frost),
Fanny E Davies, daughter 1876,
Mary Elizabeth Davies 1877
Charlotte Mendos Davies 1882
Until 1876 Joseph is known to have been in business at 38 Commercial
Street but for Mary Elizabeth her birth was registered as 15 Bishop
Street (DOB Dec 18, 1877). Family lore is that sometime in the late
1870s the Commercial Street business was destoyed by fire: “the family
were returning from chapel on a Sunday and saw smoke coming from over
Commercial Street. They discovered it was their own property. It was not
insured.” (Remembered comments by grandmother in 1940s). I would have
expected this to have been reported in the local newspaper (? Merlin ?)
but it is impractical for me to check Newport papers of the time until
at least May next year (I am 4000 miles away!). Is anyone in a position
to help me? And, naturally, I would be delighted to hear from anyone
else researching these lines.
With thanks and hopes,
Brian Davies
