Hi Graham
I was born Aberdare, thats 86J shed if my memory is correct.
I used to play in and around the sheds and often "helped" to light the
engine fire with "waste" soaked in some oil or other.
Came home filthy...!!
I too have found relatives that worked on the GWR.
Take care
John
your address rings a bell - engine sheds

WR and GWR shed codes in square brackets, some sub-sheds were different
in GWR days.

Oh thank you very much. That clarifies when he was born now. Did the census
indicate that they were still living at 88 High St Aberceychan?
I am coming down to Wales this week. Do you think I would be able to check
any parish registers to look for his marriage or death as the records centre
in Cwmbran?
Any advice would be appreciated because as you can see, i'm new to all this!
Thank you.
Tina
I am trying to find some more information about my grandfather Robert
Charles Holmes, who lived in Cefen Fforrest Avenue, Blackwood during the 1930's.
I have 2 possible matches for his birth:
B: Pontypool, 4th quarter 1886 11a pg 120
or
B: Bedwelty, 3rd quarter 1876 11a pg 5.
I have not seen either of these certificates so I do not know which is
correct. Although I believe his fathers name was also called Robert Holmes.
Additionally, I would like to know if there is any record of him marrying
his partner Edith May Woods (formerly Hippert) and also a record of his death
in Blackwood approximately 1955. Does anyone have any suggestions of where
else I can look for this information?
Many thanks,
Tina Holmes.

It has occurred to me to wonder if the name Townsend is "truly" of Wales.
==========
My direct line of Townsends migrated to MON (in/nr Garndiffaith) from
Bedminster, SOM c1845, and thence to the USA (Pennsylvania) in 1879. It appears
that they came to SOM from GLS, in/nr Bitton, in the late 1700s. They were
coal miners for generations, and it seems that their migrations coincided with
coal booms and busts in the various locations.
