Letters to the Editor
Sir,
If it is consistent with your plan to insert such as the following, and you will be so good as to do so, perhaps some of your antiquarian readers may be so obliging as to send the desired information for your columns.
An old copy of Wynne's History of Wales, containing many old marginal MS notes and observations, is one opposite "Blethyn ap Cofyn as follows ap Sr. Richd. Wms. als. Cromwel & N. ash Walter Cromwel &c., Sr. Richd.Wms ap Morgan ap William ap Morgan of Newchurch in Morganwg and one of ye Privy Chamber to K. Henry 7th ap John ap Morgan ap Howel ap Madog Lord of Kibion ap Fweristen ap Gwaethfod Vawr"
The appendix to the Life of Oliver Cromwell &c., says the name "was not originally Cromwell but Williams. Morgan Wms., son and heir of William of a very ancient family in Wales, married the sister of the famous Thomas Lord Cromwell, who was made Earl of Essex by King Henry 8th. By her he had a son named Richard, who, when he grew up was knighted by King Henry and took the name of his uncle Cromwell, though he kept the arms of Williams."
Being desirous of obtaining notices of the pedigree to any of the descendents of William ap Morgan of Newchurch (including those of Morgan Williams), who continued resident in Glam. & Mon; and seeing in a Welsh periodical, that a gentleman in America is also making inquiries for the same account of the early life of ROGER WILLIAMS, who arrived there in Feb 1630 and was the founder of Rhode Island, and is supposed to have been born in Wales in 1599, and said to be related to the family of Oliver Cromwell, whose ancestors were called Williams, I have taken the liberty of troubling you for the favour of a part of your columns for the inquiry, trusting some of your readers may be able to furnish notices of the family and pedigree of the Williams alluded to, or reference to where they can be procured.
I remain Mr. Editor, your obedient servant.
W.

Here are two items that are about my Williams family:
The Cambrian 5 Oct 1839
Longevity
There are now living in the family of Mr. Williams of the Great House in the Parish of Tredunnock, Mon., ten persons, nine brothers and a mother, whose combined ages make 582 years.
- In the Parish of Barghill, Heref. there are five resident householders, whose dwellings are near the churchyard, the youngest of whom is 82 and the eldest 90 years old.
[We thought this was going to be the key to unlock a few doors when I found it in the index, but this is all it said. Pity! They seemed to be fascinated by this sort of item and there are many more like it.]
The Cambrian 1 Jan 1831
Died
On the 15th inst. at Tredunnock, Mon. Mr. Wm. Williams in the 76th year of his age - an industrious, honest and inoffensive man. His remains were followed to the grave by his ten sons, besides whom he has left a widow and 36 grandchildren.
[Now that's a bit more like it. Pity though they did not give the names and ages of all the sons, their wives and all the grandchildren; perhaps it would have been too expensive!!]
Peter Williams
Thanks Jeff.

Maindee is now part of Newport. Nowadays people think of Maindee as quite a small area. The size shrank when Newport expanded. For example, eighty odd years ago, my mother's house in St Julian's Road was in Maindee and not Newport.
