thanks - as I said, the circumstances are quite peculiar which led me to
suspect that something was awry somewhere ... this is a small village and there
are still a number of older residents who remember the lady's death in 1936
(it happened in my house which is why I am interested) and anyone who has ever
mentioned it has, without exception, expressed the opinion that "there was
something going on"....I don't suppose I will ever know.

Hello Bernadette I've met you on the Shail list....and others!
I always thought that you could do nothing at all until the death was
registered. In this particular case the person died in suspicious circumstances
and there was an inquest. The death occurred on 3rd November 1936, the inquest
and the burial both took place on the same date, 7th November, and the death
was registered on the 9th. The inquest and the burial seem to me to have
been conducted with undue haste, considering the circumstances. Today I was at
Newport Reference Library to try to discover what information was published.
It made fascinating reading but the whole affair seems to have been
purposefully "hushed up"....and the inquest not carried out as completely as I feel
it should have been.
thanks anyway

Hi Lindsay,
I don't see why not, if you're talking about a difference of a few days. You
had 7 days to register a death. So if you were quick off the mark and buried
the person promptly after their death - the registration date could well be
after that.

Their daughter Susan PITMAN married Joseph HORLER 17th July 1865.(HARLER in 1881 census)
at Trinity Church, Pillgwenlly,Newport.
She later married William COLES after the death of Joseph in 1880.
Later her sister Margaret PITMAN married William Henry HORLER March qtr 1867.
She later married Edwin WINSTONE after Henry's death in 1883.
According to the 1881 census a Sarah PITMAN aged 70 was living with the

Hi Tony,
You've probably got this which I've managed to dig up, but just in case:

Dear Listers,
I am hoping that some one local to the Newport area can help with this
query.
Family lore has it that my grandfather Joseph Hodges ( b. Blaina 1871 and
arrived in Australia 1879) went to England during the first world war and
worked for Vickers Ltd and before returning to Australia he sold the family
farm which was near Risca. I recently obtained his war record which does
indeed state that, at the end of hostilities, he applied for leave to
"settle up business regarding property affairs". Date 13-1-1919.
My question is, would there be records of any sort still in existence,
such as Title Deeds or other, that would shed further light on such a
transaction and where would I begin to search for them.
With best wishes to all,
Llew Hodges

Thanks Robert,

Pictures of: St Baglan's Church, Baglan (GLA); and Three Monmouthshire
Churches (MON)
Dear Listers,
I have just uploaded this week's Retrospectives onto my website. They
include:
1. A photographic exploration of the ancient and derelict parish church at
Baglan, near Port Talbot in the county of Glamorgan (thirteen pictures).
This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in December 2003.
2. Photographs of three parish churches in the county of Monmouthshire (four
pictures). The churches are: St Cadoc's at Llangattock Vibon-Avel; St
Govan's at Llangovan; and St Dingat's at Dingestow. This feature was first
shown on 'Images of Wales' in September 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm
While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your
own Retrospective requests.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Robert,
Thanks for all your hard work, it's deeply appreciated!
I have Elizabeth "Goold" with the 3 children at the kings Head in
Abertillery in 1881, and there too she is a widow, her place of birth again
recorded as
Ware. The correct spelling though is "Weare", and it's between Bristol and
Bridgwater.
I haven't found any earlier censuses of Eliz D and a Joseph, and it appears
by the 1881 census that Edward John (later known as just 'John') was born in
Pontypool, an entry on FreeBMD for Sept 1870 in the Pontypool RD I assumed
to be his. But the 1891 birthplace of "AberbeeG" has puzzled me.
Just a little note to you that no matter how hard I looked at the image, I
wouldn't have seen anything at all as I'm totally blind. Smiles. Once again,
many many thanks for your hard work and time.
Very best wishes,
Jon
Misers aren't much fun to live with, but they make great ancestors
Dear Jon
I've spent some time on these two because, like you, I had great difficulty
in deciphering the mother's place of birth.
In 1891 the main details are:
Kings Head, Inn, Aberystruth, Abertillery
Eliza D Gould, Head, widow, 58, Innkeeper
John Gould, son, single, 20, coalminer, Monmouthshire, Aberbeeg
Lily Gould, daughter, single, 17, Monmouthshire, Aberbeeg
Thomas Gould, son, single, 15, coalminer, Monmouthshire, Aberbeeg
In 1901 the household is a bit more complicated because one daughter has
married a Mr Williams, who is not at home, but are all still at the Kings
Head Inn.
Eliza Deborah Gould, head, widow, 69, Innkeeper
John Gould, 30, single, coalminer, Abertillery
Tom Gould, 26, single, coalminer, Abertillery
Lily Williams, daughter, married, 27, Abertillery
Daniel R. Williams, 6, Abertillery
Bonny Williams, 4, Abertillery
Tom Williams, 3, Abertillery
Eliza's place of birth in 1891 is incomprehensible - a place in Somerset. In
1901 it is listed as Ware, Somerset, possibly because the recorded did not
know 'where'!
Looking at earlier censuses it seems quite possible that Eliza's late
husband was Joseph, with whom she had 3-4 older children that do not appear
as part of the family in 1891. If that is the case then Joseph came from
Midsomer Norton, Somerset, and was one of the many coalminers from that area
who moved to South Wales with the demise of the Somerset coalfield.
Suggestions for Eliza's place of birth then include Stratton (on the Fosse)
for 1901 or Hallatrow for 1861.

If someone with a pair of eyes that, unlike mine, are working, is willing to
transcribe the 1891 census of the Gould family at Abertillery, I'd very much
appreciate it.
The ref is:
RG12; Piece: 4353; Folio 100; Page 64
The household members are
Eliza D Gould 58
John Gould 20
Lily Gould 17
Thomas Gould 15
I'm specifically interested in the households address, Eliza's place of
birth, and any occupations recorded.
Hi again folks,
I've been trying to locate the family on ancestry in 1901, and finally found
them on the official 1901 site. Elizabeth Deborah Gould is indexed as Eliz
Deborah Gould, but on ancestry as just Deborah, which is why I couldn't find
her.
Could I ask for a pair of willing and able eyes again to transcribe this
household please?
The ref is:
RG13; Piece: 4935; Folio: 122; Page: 17.
Once again, many thanks and kindest regards to all,
Jon
