Good morning list.
I am looking for the family of a Mary SCANNELL born abt 1834 in Ireland. She
was the daughter of an Edward SCANNELL listed as deceased on her 1852
marriage certificate. She married John BUCKLEY in Merthyr Tydfil. They and
their children arrived in Pittsburgh, PA from Merthyr Tydfil by 1873.
Although there are several Scannell/ Scannal/ Scanlon persons in Merthyr
Tydfil I have not found any to be a sibling.
I am also studying my HAYES family also from Cork, Ireland who lived on Iron
St. in Tredegar. That Hayes family also came to Pittsburgh in 1877. There
are 2 marriages connecting the BUCKLEY/ SCANNELL and HAYES family, both in
Pittsburgh. I am also aware of a Mary SCANNELL as witness to another wedding
in Tredegar.
There is now enough reason to look closely at the Tredegar, SCANNELL.
Looking at the archives I see others who have discussed SCANNELL in
Tredegar. My first attempt at a connecting email failed as they were older
postings. I think it best to post fresh and I am hoping that someone can
pick up on it and help me here.
I appreciate any info.

Birth in December quarter 1895 of WILLIAMS Emily Dorothy in Toxteth Park
registration district (now part of Liverpool) ref 8b 173.
If this was the right one, she was only 15 when she married , and not yet 16
when she died. The young age may have contributed to death in childbirth.
There is an Emily WILLIAMS age 5 in 1901 with mother Dorothy in Everton
1901, but father was James, a bottle washer. RG13; Piece: 3480; Folio: 88;
Page: 43
Somebody has put an Emily Dorothy WILLIAMS b 1891 Liverpool on a personal
family tree on Ancestry, shown as Nash family tree.
What was the age and occupation of John George WORGAN on the marriage
certificate? Where was he in 1901? He does not seem to have been at home
with his widowed grandmother and Eva, born 1898 in Tredegar, if that is the
right family. RG13; Piece: 4937; Folio: 35; Page: 20
There was a John Geo. WORGAN aged 8 in 1891 in Alvington, Gloucestershire
between Chepstow and Lydney, then a significant port. If he became a mariner
there could be a connection with a girl from Liverpool, but why come to Ebbw
Vale in that case?
I see that the 'Nash family tree' has Eva WORGAN as born Lydney 1893. and
John George WORGAN as born 1859 in Gloucestershire.
Some or all of this may have no connection to your puzzle. Just some ideas.

Dear Diane,
Although I've only uploaded just over half of them, *all* of the Welsh
churches and chapels that I've photographed are included in the on-line
index to the 'Welsh Churches and Chapel Collection'; the Olchon Valley
church site is not one of them.
If I'm not mistaken, the Olchon Valley is actually in England, because the
ridge on the western side of the valley marks the border between
Herefordshire (England) and Monmouthshire (Wales).
Until now, I was not familiar with the legend to which you refer.
Kind regards,

Here is a link where you can read more about the legend. Also a
description of it's location. Would you be willing to undertake a project of
photographing the site (if there's anything to photograph)? It's certainly a
unique bit of Welsh history.

'Welsh Churches and Chapels Collection' - Llanhilleth, MON
Dear Listers,
I'm still working steadily through my collection of photographs of
churches and chapel, and adding them to the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels'
feature on my website (see www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/churches/).
I have today added a new webpage displaying a selection of photographs of
St Illtyd's Church, Llanhilleth (MON). The photos were taken in 2004 by
Michael P. Thompson. To access this latest addition, go to the URL quoted
above, click the 'search the indexes' button and scroll down the
alphabetical list until you find the hot-link to Llanhilleth.

Pictures of: Brecon Town(BRE); and Pontrhydyfen Viaduct (GLA)
Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto
my website, include:
1. Scenes taken in historic Brecon, the county town of Breconshire (six
pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in December
1997.
2. A visit to Pontrhydyfen, birthplace of celebrities and site of a fine
19th century railway viaduct (eight pictures). Pontrhydyfen is in the
county Glamorgan. This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in
January 1999.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm
While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your
own Retrospective requests.

Hi Listers,
I would be so pleased if any members of the MASSER family could be found in
our area. My great-greatgrandfather was LEMUEL MASSER who lived in Velindre
near Glasbury.
I have been researching my family and I know that one member John James
Masser moved from Abergavenny to Newport with his wife Alice in the early 1900s.
Four children were born there ---- Horace, Reginald, Elsie and David Lemuel.
Their first two children were born in Abergavenny ------ Ethel Maud and
Arthur John.
Does any of this info ring bells with someone?
Snowy
Hi Peter
These transcripts are from copies of actual pages I took when I was in Wales recently. The bulk of them I post to the Glamorgan list but select any Monmouth ones to post here. I used the indexes online to decide what pages I wanted.
Re the Clergy, I use the clergy database http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/ but as uploading it is still an ongoing project I ask the creator of the database for help sometimes. I also have the Alumni for Oxford and Cambridgeshire to use as a reference.
regards
Lyn

Thanks for all these posts from the Cambrian. I am wondering if it is possible for anyone to do searches like this or do you have some special access? I tried and all I could find was the Index references. The same question also applies to some of your posts on Clergy details.

You can search many items in the 'Cambrian' at www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian .
The paper started in 1804 and all BMDs and many items from all over Wales
were indexed from that date. At some point in the history of the Cambrian
Indexing project, which has run over a number of years/decades, a decision
was made to limit indexing of adverts and news stories to those with
specific reference to West Glamorgan (apart from some all-Glamorgan
references like the County Asylum). All BMD notices are indexed, and some
BMD notices from other papers after 1890s are in there. The newspaper itself
changed in character over the years, from one with circulation over gentry
and business classes across Wales to more of a local newspaper for Swansea
and Neath, with a declining proportion of articles about Cardiff, Carmarthen
and further afield.
I am happy to answer queries about the Cambrian off list.

Hi Judy
Llanhilleth is quite a long way from Llangattock Lingoed, so with Hughes being a common name, I suspect this is not the same person.

Hi Lynn,
Do you think this James Hughes is a relative of mine? My
grr-grandfather was James Hughes b-1810 Llangattock Lingoed, Monmouthshire,
his son James b-1859 Llangattock Lingoed, his son was James b-1884
Llangattock Lingoed and moved to Canada 1904. Judy

We have recently had a marriage certificate where the marriage took place

Does anyone know if the chapel still exists and if there are any B.M.D. or
monumental inscriptions available?
======================
Dear Val and John,
I've copied (below) part of a message I sent to the Powys mailing list a
few years ago (June 1998), after visiting Bethlehem Chapel, Llanelly:
----------------
I made the 40 mile trip [from my home] this morning, and can confirm that
Bethlehem Chapel is definitely still there. It's not actually in the
village of Llanelly, but in the parish of Llanelly, about half a mile due
south of Llanelly Parish Church. Llanelly village is tiny, consisting of
about 6 houses and the parish church of St Elli. The surprisingly large
parish churchyard is marvellous and contains some yew trees over 800 years
old.
The grid reference for the chapel is SO231140.
The chapel is in an excellent state of repair, and is obviously still in
use. It lies on about a quarter of an acre of land around which there are
a number of gravestones. The gravestones look as if they've been moved
from their original positions, and are mostly leaning against the end wall
of the chapel and against a boundary wall. Some of the gravestones are
badly eroded and the inscriptions are illegible - others are in quite good
condition.
A notice-board near the entrance to the chapel states:
BETHLEHEM BAPTIST CHAPEL
Est. 1830
- it also gives details of the order of services, and the pastor's name:
Howard Foster.
The chapel was locked, so I couldn't look inside.
----------------
There is a photograph of the chapel in the 'Welsh Churches and Chapels
Collection' feature on my website:
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/churches/
There is also an archived 'Images of Wales' feature available on Llanelly
(BRE), containing several more photographs of the chapel, which can be
reinstated onto my website as a 'Retrospective' on request.
Kind regards,
John
