Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
OK so I have been watching the messages and trying to figure out why some are arriving without anything in them and I think I have one reason now.
Some of you are using incredimail, or something like it, where you can have a lovely background picture and all sorts of whistles and bells on your messages. unfortunately Rootsweb servers only accept plain text messages so they are stripping out everything including your information and then passing on the blank message.
PLease can you make sure that before you send the message you click on format on the menu bar and then plain text. this should at least give the message more chance of surviving the server snippers and will reduce the amount of time I spend sorting out messages that have been held for no apparent reason.

It's much like the job of a coal miner, I suspect, although the product
is different - ironstone was one of the main iron ores but contains
less iron than, for instance, haematite.

Hi List, can someone recommend somewhere where I can find details of a description of a the job of an iron stone miner please.
Ggrandfather SMITH was one whilst living in Pontypool, before his marriage to my ggrandmother )Mary Ann COLEMAN) and afterwards around Ebbw Vale before he migrated out to Queensland in 1887.
Many thanks, Michael McAllister

Hi, Michael. Ironstone is an iron ore often found in conjunction with coal
deposits. My GGGrandmother worked for a time c1861 as a girl in Blaina,
Aberystruth, MON as an ironstone filler, whose job as I perceive it was to fill
wagons or other transporting devices with the ironstone hewed by miners. This
link will take you a website having much information about Ironstone Mines
and Miners:
_Tom Leonard Mining Museum_ (http://www.ironstonemuseum.co.uk/)
The Cleveland mines described in that website were in northeast England, but
I expect that much of the information applies also to the ironstone mines of
Wales.

Cecil

I sent a reply to this thread yesterday and signed off my system shortly
afterwards before the message arrived back on my system. I found that my
mail software had stripped out the body of my message which is shown above.
My apologies to those who like me are scratching their heads over the
empty message.
Hope this helps

Hi List again
Massive Big 'Thank yous' to John who solved my first problem with the
BOURNE connection.....Transcribed as BOWNE.
Problem two ..... well I did say I had three.
I have Stephen Townsend FOWLER born Dec Q 1870 Newport M (11a 164) living
at home with his mother in Newport in 1901 Census. Then find him marrying in
Dec 1902 Newport M (11a 377) to one of two woman Emma Sarah BUSS or Eliza
CLISSETT.
There are a number of FOWLER births between 1903 - 1912 but unless I buy all
the certificates I don't know who the parents are. ... Stephen did have
brothers that would've added to these births. (No census Free Bees here)
In 1913, 1915 & 1917 I have three births
John FOWLER Sept Q 1913 Newport (11a 505)
Mary Winifred FOWLER 14 May 1915 Newport (11a 559) (Certificate Bought)
Sydney J FOWLER Dec Q 1917 (11a 416)
... the parents are Stephen Townsend FOWLER and Elizabeth CASEY
I know nothing more about Elizabeth CASEY......where she came from, who here
parents were etc.
I don't find a death that could possibly be the first wife Eliza or Emma
Sarah FOWLER and I don't find a marriage for Stephen Townsend FOWLER and
Elizabeth CASEY.
If I can get hold of the marriage certificate I'm hoping more doors will
open to track the CASEY line.
Can anyone help me Please.

Hi again, Lynn
The most likely child ( and probably the first son) of this marriage is
Births Sep 1906 Fowler Stephen Townsend Newport M 11a 234
Deaths Mar 1907 FOWLER Stephen Townsend 0 Newport M 11a 170
The birth cert should give you the mother's name.
Regards, John
I had some information on my great great grandfather joining the South Wales
Borderers. I'm just wondering if theres any chance there are records
relating to any battles he fought in, his rank etc. I know from family that he
move to India c 1903 with his wife and two daughters. He is on the 1901 Census
living with his wife in the Brecon Barracks. He also brought back a Zulu
shield.
I would love to know why he moved to India.

I have a simple general question that I have failed to find a solution. What
is the name of the Roman Catholic Church in Tredegar or the nearest one that
would have been used and where should I seek Church records such as Baptisms
and Marriages for the years 1845-1880. I have applied for marriage and birth
certificates but I am also interested in the Church info. If anyone can
field this seemingly simple question it would be appreciated.
