Hello John,
Have you obtained the birth certificates from the local Registrar, because
they would be handwritten from the entries in the register by the staff, far
better than having them photocopied from the GRO.
And if the birth certificates that you have don't match up, it's possible
that your birth certificates for same named children have no connection to your
Ancestry.
Regards Barbara.
I am trying to find the maiden name of Sarah who married Thomas Davies
c1842. I cannot find any marriage certificate. Thomas was born Llanmartin about
1807 and Sarah was born in Wells Somerset about 1810
They had three children and i have the birth certificates of all of them
Mary Jane b. 1843 Caerleon father Coachman, mothers maiden name i think
Simmons
Elizabeth b. 1845 Caerleon father Coachman, mothers maiden name unreadable.
I have tied unsuccessfully to transcribe it.
Sarah b. 1846 Caerleon father Coachman, mothers maiden name Married (as in
formally Married), yes i know this is impossible but cannot work it out. Sarah
could have been married before.
Thomas and his wife both died at Pool Cottage Llanmartin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Regards John

Peter,
My sincerest thanks to you for this census transcription. As yet I don't
have Elizabeth's marriage certificate to Thomas Holder in 1877, but I had
assumed that she was an unmarried mother when Annie was born. Obviously the
marriage cert will prove this one way or the other, but it was somewhat of a
surprise to see Elizabeth recorded as married. If her marriage certificate
to Thomas Holder does show her to have been previously married, it will at
least give her maiden name, but knowing my luck it'll be Jones, Evans,
Smith, etc. <smiles>
Having named her 2 children Ann/Annie and William H. doesn't help either to
locate their birth certificates with certainty. But with your help, it
really is a good feeling to have traced her life back one more step further
to this census.
Sincerest thanks once again, and kindest regards,
Jon

Jon,
In what I have typed below, the square brackets indicate that the field has
"ditto" in the original and I have interpreted the content of the square
brackets from the last field filled properly. Or, in some cases the field
has been left blank by the enumerator.

what you would find of interest.
I hope this is what you were wanting.

P.S. My family were in Abertillery, just down the valley in 1871 & 1881,
then they moved to Brynmawr. I still have relatives in Brynmawr and visited

Hi listers,
I've been looking for my great and great great grandmothers, in the 1871 census for quite some time, and have just this moment found them!
The details I had were that Thomas Holder married Elizabeth Powell in 1877 Abergavenny RD. The 1881 census had Elizabeth born 1852, and her daughter Annie Powell born 1869 was recorded as Thomas's step-daughter.
So,as Elizabeth's age was consistent throughout the 1881/91/01 censuses, I tried opening up my search criteria as far as possible, searching for any Eliz* and no surname specified, born 1852 in Wales with the keyword set to Bed* in case of typoes on Bedwellty as it is said that was the area where she came from.
Finding their surname Powell with one l? Elizabeth as Eliza and Annie as Ann was what made this searching so hard for so long. but I've found them! A great way to finish off 2007 me thinks?
>From the ancestry index:
1871 census: Blaina, Monmouthshire, Wales.
RG10; Piece: 5317; Folio: 77; Page: 38.
Eliza Powel, Lodger, 19, Nantyglo, Monmouthshire.
Ann Powel, Daughter, 2, Brynmawr, Monmouthshire.
As I'm blind, I can't access info on the census image such as address, occupations, marital status etc, so if someone sober enough who has the time to transcribe the household image for me is willing to do so, I would be so very very grateful.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.
Kindest regards to all on the list,

With thanks to Barbara, Jeff & Roy for their replies :-
>From Roy,
1. Abergavenny, I think
2. Can you give us a bit more info about John and Elizabeth, such as their
approx. dates of birth and daughter's forename? There are at least two John
and Elizabeths in 1851 that might fit the bill - one living at 5 Iron Row
Bedwellty, and another at 31 Bridge Street.
Robert
Here's all the info. I have.
Hannah MORGANS was born April 1856 at The Square, Rhymney, Reg.Dist Abergavenny, sub.didt. Tredegar.
Father John Walter MORGANS
Mother Elizabeth, nee EVANS
Hannah married John Thomas in 1875, at Sharon Chapel, Tredegar, (should this have been Saron?) & they were in U.S. in 1880 Census.
I haven't yet found John & Elizabeth's marriage & don't have their dates of birth. I know he was an Iron Baller & went to Hughesovska to work for a few years.
sorry not to have given this info. sooner.

To all, especially you very helpful people that subscribe to this list, many thanks and the compliments of the season to you. It's at this time of the year when many of us expats get very nostalgic about a cool Christmas back in Wales but I must say, a barbecue down at the beach in Oz takes some beating too!

Lyn,
Sorry for not replying sooner, but your email was in my junk mail box. For
some reason my spam filter suddenly decides to kick out some messages,
whilst leaving the others from the list. Unfortunately, I don't have
Bradney's Hundred of Newport. You could try posting a general request to
the list. Otherwise, I think that it is possible to get Bradney via
inter-library loan in Australia.
Happy Christmas,

Thanks for the information Jeff.
I'll try these.
The Birth Certificate in 1856,shows address as The Square, Rhymney, Registration District Abergavenny, sub district
Tredegar.
Marriage Cert. in 1875 shows married at Sharon Chapel, Tredegar, according to rites of Independents, in district of Bedwellty. Should this be Saron Independent do you think?

Dear Listers,
One day later than planned, I have just uploaded this week's Retrospectives

1. The River Tawe after two days of heavy rainfall in the county of
Breconshire (seven pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in March 1998.
2. Winter seascapes in the counties of Carmarthen and Glamorgan (seven
pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in
February 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at

While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your
own Retrospective requests.

Can someone help please.

Many thanks
