Rachel, daughter of Thomas and Margaret DUFFIELD was baptised in
Christchurch parish church on 5 April 1829.
She was living in Caerleon on 24 October 1858 when she married James
WARREN in St Paul's parish church, Newport.
I have her details from the census returns from 1861 to 1891 inclusive
(she died in 1891) but not those for 1841 and 1851. Can anyone help me
in locating her, please?

Dear Rosemary,
I think I have found a possible answer to your question. If you look on
Mike John's Monmouthshire Marriages Index:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monfamilies/Monmarrindex.html
Then select <HO-HY> to look for Elizabeth's first husband Mr. Holmes.
I found only one Mr. Holmes marrying an Elizabeth in the index:
Holmes, William, [of] Llanvaches, [married], Elizabeth, Lewis, [of]
Llanvaches, [at] Llanvaches, [by] Banns, 12/06/1798
This seems about right in terms of the date of Elizabeth's first marriage
and the location, since Llanvaches is only a short distance from Magor. You
are lucky with this because the index is not complete - some of the
registers are missing - and there is only one possible marriage. If she
had been a Mary, there are 8 possibles, but you could eliminate some on the
date being too early or too late.
Can I ask if you Leonard name comes from Mon.? I have at least one link
from my Williams family to a Leonard in Redwick, just next door to Magor. I
have only just found it so I need to do more work on it.
Happy Researching,
Peter Williams

Hi Hugh,

I've wondered about that. Family letters have it that John Van Cooten
never returned to the West Inidies. I would have thought that Bristol
would have been a more suitable place to wait for news or cargo from
the West Indies.

Hi Brad,
Thanks for your response. Do you know how long someone might have had
to reside in a parish to be considered 'of' the parish?

Dear Judy,
Thanks for this. Martha's full name was Martha Keane Smithers,
daughter of Henry Keane Smithers and Sophia. I believe she was
baptised 24 Apr 1790 at St George Indep, Southwark, London, UK.

I am not sure, Glenn. That is more of a needle in a haystack job - baptism
can be in any village in the registration district or not even there at all
if they took the baby back to the parish from which the mother came for
instance. I saw you asked about buying a certificate through Free BDM - if
you do a search at the bottom of the list is a link to what to do now -
follow that.

Lyn

I have examined the entry and it looks very much like it was the enumerator started to write "Parish of..." then realised his mistake and crossed out "Parish of". (See the entry about seven lines below which reads "Parish of Bedwellty" and you will see what I mean.)
On the 1841 census there is a 15 yr-old David HINKIN living in Llandilo Fawr, Carmarthenshire could it be your David?
Regards
Jane Dyer.

Normally, three weeks. This is because there needs to be time for
calling of banns, which has to be performed over a three week period
prior to the wedding taking place.

Dear List,
Does anyone know where a pub called the Royal Exchange was in Beaufort? I have a possible relative, William Williams, Publican, b. Gloucestershire, living in Beaufort from 1851 to 1871 per the censuses. He is married to Susan/Susannah b. Llangattock Mon.
In 1851 no name is given.
In 1861 the Pub is called the Royal Exchange and is between Chapel Houses , a Chapel and Evans Row.
In 1871 it's just called Ale House and is between the Williams Houses and the Bank Houses.
In 1881 Susannah is a widow and Proprietor of houses, living in one of the Exchange houses.
We visited Gwent last week and drove along the road from Brynmawr to Ebbw Vale, but we could not see any likely candidates.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Dear All,
In the transcripts of the St Woolos, Newport, marriage register I
have found a John Van-Cooten Chelsea, London marrying Martha Smithers
of St Woolas, Newport on 23-Jul-1808.
To the best of my knowledge, Martha's family were London merchants.
John was the son of Hendrik Van Cooten, a plantation owner from
Demerara in the West Indies.
Why would a London couple marry at St Woolas? Is it the Gretna Green
of the west?
I've looked in the baptism transcripts for 1769 to 1837, and also the
burials for 1769 to 1843 but can find no records.
Children of this marriage were John Lucius born 1809 in Hot Wells,
Bristol, Maria Anna born 1813 in Newport, Sidney Silicae born about
1851 in England, Rosalie Virginia born about 1820 possibly in France,
Henrique, and Eugene Celadon born about 1820.
Where else should I look in Monmouthshire records to find birth or
baptism records?
Regards,
Rod

Hi,
I am grasping at straws in looking for Thomas Morgan, born between February and June of 1821 in Monmouthshire, S. Wales. He would have emigrated 1840-42 and settled in Schuylkill Co., PA, as a single young man. Thomas (later middle initial was "R") was a mine superintendent here; this means that he very probably had mining experience in Wales.
Can anyone tell me what areas of Monmouthshire were mining areas? I would love to find out which Welsh town he came from and, thereby, find a history of any other family.
Thank you.
