was one of the first shown first shown on my website, in November 1997.
2. The attractive Victoria Gardens in the centre of the town of Neath in the

It is difficult to translate accurately from one language to another
(except very simple sentences) since one culture's imagery may differ
from another's.
My wife and I think your inscription probably implies- live your life as
though this day is your last and tomorrow is Judgement Day!
The inscription therefore most likely translates as
> "Ac edrychwch arnoch eich hunan

> And look at yourselves

We think 'ofgalon' is a transcription error for 'gofalon'

Thanks for this thought - it may explain a baptism of a 16year old at St
James Bristol in 1840 - and a lot of other things about her apparent lack of
family.
Can I access these records through the LDS library ?

Hello again
A helpful lister, Sue, found a baptism in Bristol, which looks like a good
possibility for Emma Lewis Leck (b 18 Feb 1824, baptised 30 Mar 1840, better
late than never).
Her father is not given and her mother is Ann Leck. There is a marriage for
Lewis Leek and Ann Williams in Llanfrachfa Mon 11 Feb 1816.
So is anyone researching LEEK or WILLIAMS in Llanfrachfa ? Or any family
there ?
Next job then, look at the film for St James Bristol and see if there are
any clues.
If this is our Emma, does anyone have any ideas where to go next ?
Diane Cole
Hi Walt,
My Social Worker for the deaf goes to Quakers meetings over Merthyr area
somewhere, I wonder if they would have anything that related to activity in
their neighbouring county?

They Fought With Pride looks at the lives and experiences of the men who fought on the Western Front with the 2nd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment during World War One. The Battalion were mobilised for active service on August 4th, 1914 and remained on active service in Germany with the Army of Occupation until May, 1919. In 1914 the Battalion was very much made up of men from Abercarn, Blaenavon, Crumlin, Cwmbran, Llanhilleth. Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool. The book provides a valuable insight and memorial to those who served with the Battalion and would appeal to those with an interest in Local or Family History and The First World War. The book is £12.95 in hardback, contains 118 pages and over 140 photographs.
The launch will take place at Cwmbran Library on the 5th November, between 11.00 am and 2 pm - everyone welcome. There will be a display of photographs and other memorabilia. Also on sale will be a CD containing a variety of information on soldiers that served with the 2nd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment. Come along and have a look. If you are unable to attend the launch, but would like to purchase the book, please drop me a line.
Many Thanks
David Nicholas
Just a quick visit to thank all those who offered suggestions regarding Quaker activity in Monmouthshire.
The key text was Monmouthshire Medley vol 1 containing an article by Reginald Nichols (p79). Essentially there was one meeting from early times, at Llanvihangel Pontymoile near Pontypool, later moved to Trosnant (in Pontypool). It died out by 1835. I think there may have been later revival but have no information on that.
It was very active from the early days with visits from George Fox (the founder). Richard Hanbury, noted Pontypool industrialist, was an active member by 1657.
So if you have elusive ancestors in the Pontypool region before 1835, the Quaker records may be worth a look.
Walt

Hello, still on my Mr Thomas Sims quest. I have an image of 1861 census of
Raglan Ref:RG9 3989 25 16 where I find him lodging with the Baptist
minister at Chepstow Road, however he is listed as lodger & head (at least
that is the way I read it) Daft question if he was just lodging with the
minister, why would the enumerator list him as lodger & head?, am I missing
something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Helen

Dear Lois,
One of our Ebbw Vale branch of Gwent FHS is researching the same line as
you.
From my notes:-
Albert Edward Gould married Margaret Jane Wilde in 17th April 1897 at
Tredegar Registry Office (aka Bedwellty Registry Office). These are her
grandparents.
Albert George Gould's parents are George Stock Gould and Emily Hill.
George (Stock) Gould was born 'Notbridge' Somerset in 1843 and Emily in
Bath, Somerset 1841. These are her great grandparents.
This lady visited Taunton Records Office with Gwent FHS, earlier this
year, and I gave her information that I found on Genuki of a Parish in
Somerset where a Charles Gould married a (Martha? Stock). This is where
the Stock name came into the research as Charles Gould and this Stock
lady are her GG grandparents.
Please contact me and I will give you her Email address and she has the
information that I sent her.
By the way, she also has Bryant interests.
Best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent FHS
