Hello,
My Great Grandfather, JOHN MORRIS (1852-1938) moved from his family farm near Eardisland in Herefordshire to Ebbw Vale in the mid 1870s, where he worked as a 'labourer' and later a 'furnace keeper', I assume in one ofthe local iron works (Tredegar or Sirhowy).
Can you give me some background as to what attracted him to this area in the mid 1870s, what his work would have consisted of and work conditions?
After marrying a Welsh girl (daughter of a furnace keeper) in 1875 and having a couple of kids, he made the momentous decision to uproot his family and jump on a cramped sailing boat and sail 3 months into the blue beyond to Queensland, Australia. They did so in 1878.
What was happening in the Ebbw Vale region in the late 1870s to prompt a decision like this - his family had lived in the same valley in Herefordshire for generations? Either life was rotten in industrial Wales or the promise of life in Australia was extremely attractive.
They moved to a coal mining region in SE Queensland (Burrum River region). This was near a major immigration township called Maryborough.
I would like to try to understand what made them do such a momentous thing (like many others).
Cheers,
Roger Morris

Wondering if anyone with a digital camera would like to take some photos for a poor distant Aussie with ancestors from South Wales?
These are the places I would like to get photos of:
1) The Parish Church, St George's Parish, Tredegar, MON
2) In and around Tredegar.
3) No. 13 'Wooden Houses', Ebbw Vale, MON
4) No. 16 William Street, Ebbw Vale, MON
5) In and around Ebbw Vale.
6) Any of the Iron Works nearest to Ebbw Vale.
Many thanks.

Since posting a message re Chepstow Union Workhouse a few minutes ago, I have visited Peter Higginbotham's excellent "workhouse" site, and see that Chepstow Union was not formed until 1836 - and my ancestors died in 1822 so their children could not have gone there. Census returns have not been of much help in locating them - any ideas anyone?

Does anyone know what, if any, records are extant for the Chepstow Union Workhouse from the 1820's?
My 3xg grandparents died within a short time of each other, leaving nine orphaned children aged between two and thirteen, and I am trying to discover what happened to the children. They were of the parish of Newchurch.
And does anyone know where in Chepstow the workhouse was situated?

It might be worth checking at the went Record Office to see whether they
have vestry records or churchwardens records for newchurch because there
just might be a mention in them of assistance given to relatives or notes
about the children being put into apprenticeships or into the care of a
"home" in the local area - I can't think of the correct term at the moment
but there must have been some way of getting the problem out of sight and
there would have to be payment and the churchwardens accounts just might
have a note of it if they still exist.

Dear David,
According to Peter Higginbotham's website, Chepstow Union Workhouse was not
erected until 1838. The Chepstow Poor Law Union was founded in May 1836.
A contemporary map on the website shows the workhouse on the north side of
Mounton Road to the south-west of Chepstow.
Mr Higginbotham's website is at
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Chepstow/Chepstow.shtml
You can call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) 1886 map of this area by
going to the Old Maps website at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility
(near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates
352963,193724 (without any spaces) and click the Search button.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the
map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window,
centred on the workhouse.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Heather
I don't have any info on his baptism I'm afraid, but the headstone
that contains the MI I sent is on my web site at:
http://www.cefnpennar.com/redwick/red_stthomas.htm
6 entries down the list. This is a low resolution image to conserve
space on my site but I do have a higher resolution one at home.
There's a reply here with a pointer to Mike's website which has loads
of baptism records on it too.
Cheers

Hello List
I am trying to find the baptism of Matthew Williams c.1831 in Redwick, father William Williams.
I have Matthew on the 1851 census but he is not with his parents, he is a farm servant at Redwick.
I cannot find him on the 1841 census in the area surrounding Redwick.
He is not on the Redwick Parish Registers or any other registers in the coastal area between Newport and Chepstow.
I have the 1871, 1881, 1891 Census records and he was still in the Redwick area.
If anyone has access to the 1861 census, perhaps his parents are with him?
Any help would be appreciated
Regards
Heather
Hi everyone,
I'm Jon and I live in Abertillery.
The main surnames I'm interested in are:
Cooksey ( who moved in from Frampton in Gloucestershire to the Abergavenny
and Blaenavon areas)
Escott (who moved in from the Somerset area to Abertillery)
Jones (who seem to have remained fairly local, John Jones apparently being
born around 1847 at Brynmawr according to the 1881 census)
and Thomas (who appear to have moved in from the Ross area to Abertillery,
one descendant being my grandmother's cousin George Thomas the MP)
Any family links out there?
Regards to all, Jon

Dear List,
Please excuse cross posting, I'm never quite sure which list is the correct
one for my query.
Some months ago, Keith Thomas very kindly provided me with the following
details from the 1851 Bedwelty census index.
1851 Bedwelty HO107 2448 771 36 HO107 2448 731 37
BILES Thomas 35 771 36
BILES Elinor 21 771 36
BILES John 14 771 36
BILES Julia 2 771 37
BILES Mary Ann 2 months 771 37
I am particularly interested in the relationship of John to Thomas. I don't
think he can be Elinor's son, as I believe her age to be correct.
I had hoped to be able to get into Melbourne to the Genealogical Society,
but illness has prevented this.
Does anyone have the full census for this reference, and can give me the
relationship details?
Thank you.
Judy Thomas
I have just found out one of my ancestors was in the asylum and died there. I believe Gwent records office has details Is there an emails address or do I have to write to them stating what I need
regards Linda
Hi, Could I ask if someone would look up Mon 1851 for me? The family are in Monmouth town....... I do not know the parish. The couple I am interested in are as follows..................
William Clatworthy 52 and his Wife Harriet/t also 52. I believe his occupation to be Tallow chandler. Many thanks and best regards,Kevin, Co Cork, Ireland.

. On the Raglan 1861 image the page starts with Chepstow Road where I find
my Mr SIMS lodging with the Baptist Minister and family. It then lists three
other families (two of which are listed as a lady and servant. It then
changes to I think Abergaveny Road where it lists a family of Ag Labourers
and then back to Chepstow Road where the head is listed as farmer. I have
tried locating Abergaveny Road to see if it crossed Chepstow but cannot find
on any map websites.
The High Street in Raglan runs east -west, Chepstow Road runs off this in a
south-southeast direction. Castle Street runs off High street in a
north-northeast direction thus the whole thing makes a cross roads. Now
here's the thing, While I lived in Raglan I heard the road that I have
called High street referred to as Abergavenny road AND Monmouth Road as well
as High Street - and Castle Street leads into old Monmouth road so that
would have been the original junction before they put the "new" road in
sometime in the 1950s - or even earlier.
I will see what I can do at the reference library - I haven't forgotten
about it I just haven't been able to get further than the post office for
the last couple of weeks because of stuff

Hello Lister,
Many thanks to everyone who were so helpful with my last couple of postings on Chepstow Road and Rose Cottage. I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me with another query. It then changes to I think Abergaveny Road where it lists a family of Ag Labourers and then back to Chepstow Road where the head is listed as farmer. I have tried locating Abergaveny Road to see if it crossed Chepstow but cannot find on any map websites. Would appreciate any suggestions? Many thanks Helen, Australia
