Hello everyone - I am looking for a William Watson in the 1851/61 census. He was born about 1780 to 1800 approx. in the Wrexham area. Would anyone be willing to help me please? I have him in 1839 at his daughter Elizabeth's wedding but cannot find any trace of him anywhere else.
Thank you
Diana
Hi list, I have purchased the 1861 census on CD from the Gwent Family History but can't find my family of Murray on it. I know they were there. I have heard that this is not a full copy of the census as some of it was missing. Has anyone else got a full copy with a James and Margaret Murray sons John and James and ? .
Thanks
Margaret
I have the same situation in my own Family--two girls named "Emma" and
"Emma A.", with a 4 year age difference. Both were evidently named
after the grandmother.
Emma A. was always known as "Ann or Annie", and it wasn't until I went
back to the 1870 US census that I found the actual given first names.
Evidently in this one year the census-taker was specific in insisting
on the actual given first name, not the second name the child was
called by.
Gets as confusing as people who give their children 2 given names, but
call the children by the 2nd name--like 2 generations of my family here
and in Wales. It's taken years to figure out who they are and
who/where they are in census's.
E. Ardelle Lewis in Seattle--and only 3 people know what the "E" is for.

Hi, List: Any of you have examples of families where almost the same name was given to two of the living children? In my case, it's a possible Mary, 17 (the right age and birthplace), out of the house working as a servant, and Mary Ann at home, age 7.
One Mary could have been adopted or the 7 year old could have been mistranscribed and was really 17, although her name is listed in the right order to be 7. The BMD entries are somewhat confusing.
Unfortunately, both Mary and Elizabeth BEVAN had married by 1881 to two of the CARTER brothers of Aberystruth and I can't spot them on the 1861 Mon Index, as the ideal, of course, would be to find them together on the 1861 census with the right ages. Thanks for any input. Jojo

Hi everyone,
I would be grateful if some kind person could do a look up for me please on
the 1871 census. I am trying to find James and Ruth LAVENDER and their
family. I have them in 1881 and 1891 at Ochochwith, Pontymister, but have nothing
on them for earlier census. James was born in Monmouth ca 1845 and Ruth Nee

Hi Listers,
I am new to this list and this is my first post so fingers crossed.
In a copy I possess of one of the Log Books dated 1873, for the PRINCE
ALFRED ON 29353 Built by J. H. Willmett 1861, Registered Padstow there is
pinned a letter.
The Letter Head is for:
JAMES N. KNAPP & Co
Ship Brokers
NEWPORT AND CARDIFF
COAL, COKE, IRON ORE MERCHANTS
UNITED STATES CONSULATE
AGENCY NEW YORK & BOSTON UNDERWRITERS
FOR THE BRITISH CHANNEL
Does anyone have any further information about the above company?
This Cutter was built for my ggg grandfather and his brother-in-law,
William Chalk and Joseph Grigg Coad both of Port Isaac, Cornwall and
Launched by my gg grandmother Mary Jane Chalk.
Joseph was her MASTER for the first few years, between William and Joseph
they owned 40/64's, other interested parties were involved with the local
Delabole slate quarry. The vessel was used for exporting the slate and
various other cargoes from Port Gavern and brought back coal regularly from
Newport, Monmouthshire. Some interesting cargoes such as manure, salt(from
Gloucester) and potatoes (from Belgium) where imported.
The Ship Builder J. H. Willmett, was from Newport from where he moved with
two of his brothers who also went on to build ships at Padstow, Cornwall,
their father was a ship builder at Newport.
From my research the trade in which they were involved expanded from the
Bristol channel to many of Northern Europe, it seems this starting with
exporting Slate to Nieuport Belgium before expanding into France. The Coad
Family at the turn of the 1900's actually had family members living in
Belgium as shipping agents for the family business by which time had
expanded into schooners involved in the Foreign and Home Trades. William
Chalk's Son-in-law William Cock Phillips (my gg Grandfather married Mary
Jane Chalk) died prematurely after an operation in 1897 aged 57yrs. at the
time of his death he left in his Will 9 Schooners/Brigs/Barques. The ships
continued to trade until around 1924, by then they were lost to WW1 and
The force of the sea and not replaced due to the decline of sail power to
mechanical transport.
Any way, got carried away there for a moment... SO, if anyone can help
With info' about James Knapp & Co, it would be very much appreciated. I can
email a copy of the letter to any interested persons.
Many thanks to you all for your time to read this,

In old Wales the harp had the same social status and utility as the
victorian pianio and the guitar today
Have you studied the history and archeology of the instrument ?

I was fascinated by the word "harper"
because in N Ireland you say fluter instead of flautist
which is an older form
Local newspapers make their living by publishing names - lists of
wedding guests for example with who officiated -- and may be who
played ?
So you never know what will turn up

and I learn stuff too from the searches
Harper as an occupation
I would look next for reports of his professional career
did he win any prizes in Eisteddfod ?
I have no idea what archives exist or where
newspaper reports and advertisements of concerts
of for pupils as a teacher are other places I would look
I located my granny's voice coach in Leamington Spa
got her first at boarding school in 1891 ancestry.co.uk
then a local collection at Leamington Spa library gave me much more
about her teachers and in a Kelly's directory I found the name on her
singing diploma which I have here. (Blanche Eveline Jones born Raglan)
I am researching my own Morgan and Jones very very slowly because it
is too easy to waste money on wrong certificates
So I prefer parish registers and census
Eisteddfod
look for

Hi to all.
Just rejoined after several years "rest", hoping to fill a few gaps in my knowledge.
The first mailing I receive is someone being unnecessarily offensive to a newcomer. I hope the standard of courtesy on this list has not generally descended to that level.
Starting with KING, GODWIN and POULSOM around 1880+ in Trosnant, Abersychan, Cwmffrwdoer, Pentrepiod.
Hoping to swap information. What have you?

Hi Hugh . The reason I believe that I have the correct family in 1881
census is that on the birth certificates of John and Mary it states
that they were born in High Street Pontypridd. In the 1871 census the
Morgan family is living in High Street , Pontypridd as "boarders" in
the house of a Mr Griffiths. This house is the only hous where I have
located a William Morgan occupation harpist. In the 1881 census ,as
stated he is not at home and in the 1891 census his wife is now his
widow.According to the census William was born 1837-39 Merthyr Tydfil
and as the 1st child William was born in 1865=66 in Merthyr Tydfil I
assummed that they married about his time, but so far drawn a blank in
finding the marriage or death of William harpist or the birth of the
1st son.Thankyou so much for trying to assist me. Regards Alun.<<<
