Hello again
I have just done yet another address search on 1901 census online.
This time for Clytha Park (left out "Road"). There is an entry for
"Bryn Clytha Clytha Park" but none for number 11. This sounds
promising!!!!
If anyone is able could they please see who is at that address? Hope
it is my Mary Ann WILKINS aged 32. (George WILKINS her husband died at
Bryn Ivor 11 Clytha Park Road in Dec. 1900).
In anticipation, and many thanks.

Dear David,
Alma Street, Brynmawr is still there. It runs northeast from Market Square
to the eastern end of King Street.
Oak Street, Abertillery is still there. It runs from Heyworth Road to Castle
Street, parallel to the A467 Abertillery by-pass
Rehobeth Congregational Chapel, Brynmawr. There is a Congregational Church
on the corner of Bailey Street and Warwick Road, Brynmawr.
Hermon Baptist Chapel, Nantyglo (Davies grave). This chapel was demolished
some years ago and a Medical Centre built on the site. I believe the chapel
graveyard still remains behind the Medical Centre. There is a plaque on the
wall of the Centre commemorating Hermon Chapel.
Blaina Gwent Baptist Chapel, Abertillery. There is a Baptist Chapel between
Victoria and Alma Street. I do not know if it is the same building that was
there in 1854.
Bush Hotel, Abertillery - I haven't been able to confirm whether this still
exists.
Brynithel Cemetary, Six Bells - The cemetery is still there, off Cemetery
Road, just east of the junction between the A467 and the A4046 at Aberbeeg.
I obtained the above information from the Old Maps website
(www.old-maps.co.uk/) and "The Valleys East" Street Atlas published in the
late 1990s by Streetwise of Basingstoke, Hampshire (ISBN 1-898599-60-2).
I hope you have a successful and enjoyable trip.
Kind regards,
John

Hello List
Some of my ancestors lived in Cwmtillery in the early nineteen hundreds -
in Nos 2, 14 and 16 Gaen/Gaer Street.
Can someone tell me if this street still exists, and/or the houses on it.
If the above houses are in existence, I would be thrilled to receive a photo
of them, though that is probably asking too much!
Thanks for any information

Thank you to Ann for info on 11 Clytha Park Road. I had wondered if
the original house was still there so you clarified that for me Ann.
The other interesting thing when you look at Kelly's 1901 Directory is
that next door to my George WILKINS there is another builder,
Leadbeter Bros. at no 10 Clytha Park Road.
In reply to your questions Ann re what resources I had used in trying
to find Mary Ann WILKINS, I had used the search facilities on 1901
online (both person and address options) and, since Ancestry included
Wales on their free site, had tried that also. Have tried many
combinations but obviously not the right one. Have also left open the
possibility that she may have been in England.
I suppose I shouldn't be too hard on Mary Ann (a sister of my
grandfather) - I was fortunate enough to have passed down to me one of
her many beautiful pieces of diamond jewellery. This is why I am
trying to find out all I can about her.
Thank you to all who have tried to find her and offered suggestions.
The mystery is still waiting to be solved.

I beg to differ. I have a short form birth cert myself and I also have a
"certificate of registration of birth" for my mother in law. They are not
the same thing.
My short birth cert which is called "certificate of birth" shows my name and
date of birth, which reg dist, my sex, the registrars name and date the cert
was written
The "certificate of registration of birth" shows name, date of birth, the
registrar and registration district, but the difference is in that it shows
the page and register book number. This was given on payment of the money at
registering the birth and I suspect the cert was then made out later. For
genealogical purposes tho, it gives no better info than the short extract
certificate
==================
Dear Pat (and Mon Listers),
I may have inadvertently oversimplified the situation in my attempt to
provide a succinct answer.
The question from Jenny Davis <jenny.davis(a)zen.co.uk> to which I was
responding referred to an "original 'Certificate of Registry of
Birth', dated from 1907".
This was the "short-form" version of a birth certificate of that period,
issued to the informant by the local registrar of births marriages and
deaths at the time the birth was registered. Its function was primarily to
confirm that the birth had been registered.
The only information about the birth recorded on these certificates was the
individual's name, date of birth, and registration district and sub-district
in which the birth took place.
A Certificate of Registry of Birth of that period did *not* show the gender
of the individual.
The certificate was dated and signed by the registrar, who also noted the
Entry Number and Register Book Number of the register in which he (or she)
had recorded the full details of the birth.
I assume the date of issue of your own short-form birth certificate
(entitled a "Certificate of Birth") was much more recent than 1907! :o)
The information issued by the Neath Port Talbot registration service (my
local Register Office) states:
1. After the birth has been registered, the registrar will issue a short
copy birth certificate which is free of charge. The certificate shows the
baby's details only.
2. A certificate is also available from the registrar which records the
parents' details and is a complete copy of the register entry. There is a
charge for this certificate and the registrar will advise on the current
fee.
[See http://www.neath-porttalbot.gov.uk/registrars/births.cfm]
I assume the "short copy birth certificate" referred to in 1 (above) is the
modern equivalent of the "Certificate of Registry of Birth" of 100 years
ago. Its format has clearly changed since then and the details it contains
may not be exactly the same.
Note that the subject title for this discussion refers to "GRO Certificates"
whereas my answers relate to certificates issued by *local* register
offices. The General Register Office certificates have a slightly different
format.
Kind regards,
John

If George died in 1900 that is still ok because the information for the
directory was collected in 1900 and published in 1901.
When you searched the 1901 census did you use the online one or did you look

Dear Jenny,
Yes, you have a "short-form" birth certificate, which records only the name,
date of birth, and registration district and sub-district.
The standard ("full-form") birth certificate is of far more value in
genealogy. However, you can use the information on the short-form
certificate to apply to the local registrar for a standard certificate.

First don't be sorry Bev;-)))
genealogy is like police work working tiny step by tiny step
using tried and trusted procedures
if the obvious doesn't work
then we have to be more creative about guessing mis-spellngs
even errors made in the nineteenth century in the original sources
like lies about ages
putting the stuff on the list has several advantages
eg
(1)
when I fail others are saved repeating that work
(2)
if a hard disk fails -and they do your research is safe in the list archives
I also use http://www.ancestry.co.uk/trees/main.htm
or better http://awt.ancestry.com/ which is rootsweb to uploade non
private gedcom files - off site back up
(3)
when successful distant cousins will find the work and contact that lister
which happens to me about once a year
I ignore stuff which does not interest me
I am also 69 years old and a retired teacher and do this full time.
and if a lister sees what I do step by step
they can learn how to do it themsleves
if they knew how to google many questions would not need to be asked
enjoy

1)........."Certificate of Registry of Birth" is only a receipt or
acknowledgement that you notified the Registry Office.....
2..........."Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth" is what I would call a
FULL Certificate...gives the No. Where Born & When, Given Name (if any),Sex,
Fathers name, Mothers name, Fathers Occupation, Informant, When Registered,
Registrars Name,...
3).........."Certificate of Birth" gives only the Name of the child, Date of
Birth, Registration District & Place of Birth....I call this a SHORT
Certificate..
I have ALL three and can send copies as attachments for comparisons....

Hi Mary,
I believe that when you order the short version of Birth that you only have
details of the person born and no parents listed, and no address details
either. I am unaware that you could get a short version of Death or Marriage I
thought it was only Birth.
Regarding Adoption I have no idea
Regards Barbara
Thanks Barbara,
I kinda thought that might be the case but as this is my first certificate
order I thought I would take advantage of others expertise before I spent
more money than I needed to.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between the Full certicate of birth, marriage, death or adoption and the Short certificate when ordered from GRO.
Sorry to be dense but I want to be sure I order the one that will give me the parents of the parties involved but don't want to spend more than I have to.

Searching Pergrin and Smith in Monmouth
Thanks Pam, that pretty well solidifies the information I had gleaned so
far. I have copies of another researcher's work that seemed a bit "far
fetched" but I wanted to verify the 1861 info to be more certain of my own
conclusions.
Thanks again,

I find I need one more link in my chain of circumstantial evidence (don't we all??)
Can someone look in the 1861 census for Edward Smith age 28 born Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire and wife (I hope) Mary Smith age 28 born Blaenavon, Monmouthshire. Should have son David, age 1 born Pontnewyd and possibly a daughter Elizabeth.
Oh, BTW does anyone know if there has been a transcription of Llanhilleth church records? Rumor has it that one of my Smith's married there in 1884.
