Hi listers
A friend has just asked me if I know of a reason why she can't search Mike
Johns website anymore.
I seem to recall something being said about his site on here quite some time
ago, but can't remember what it was.
any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Jon

Hello
I would like to know if someone who has access to the 1881 Wales census has time to do a lookup for me please.
1871 census details
William POWELL Head 40 Address Little Llangoven
Esther POWELL wife 42
Emily L 19
William D 15
Adelaide J 13
Gladys H 4
Glendower A 2
I know William came to NZ approx 1881 and wonder if his wife Esther died before he came, His son Thomas was already here, and I think he may have bought youngest son Glendower Alexander with him.
Many thanks
Lorraine NZ

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto my

Radnorshire, near the English border (eight pictures). This feature was
first shown on my website in December 1998.
2. A selection of old farms in or near the Usk Valley in the county of
Breconshire (six pictures). This feature was first shown on my
website in May 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display until next Saturday.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at

Hello Jenny
This is from the Gwent FHS 1813-1837 marriage index:
RAPS, Thomas m. WILLIAMS, Mary both of Machen, 25 December 1813 @ Machen.
Although it may seem unusual to us, in those days it was quite common to be married on
Christmas Day.

Repeat request please. My great grandmother Ann Davies was christened in
Bethesda Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel , Kendle in 1832 . Can any lister
tell me if she might have married there in about 1853 , her husband was a
Daniel LLewellyn [different spellings in in census]. Thankyou . Alun.
Hello Listers,
Could I please ask if anyone has the parish records for Llanhilleth if they
could please look a marriage for Thomas Raps (Rapps) of High Littleton
Somerset to Mary surname unknown. This would have taken place before 1814/15
as that is the year of there first Born Elizabeth.
This family received a removal order from Llanhilleth dating 24th February
1830 back to High Littleton in Somerset. This information was found today on
a wonderful web site http://www.highlittletonhistory.org.uk/registers.html
I hope some of you find it useful, as I know many of you have ancestors from
High Littleton.
Many thanks in advance Jenny Rapps.

Hello Listers,
Can someone please tell me if I am on the correct mailing list for Machen
and Llanhilleth, I have found some fascinating information, which I would
like to follow up on?
Does anyone have any connection with the surname of Rapps from High
Littleton in Somerset.
Regards to you all on this very cold night.

Dear Judith:
I am quite interested in the James McNamara you mentioned. My James (MacNamara) Mack was born 13 Apr 1869 in Tirphil, Glamorgan, Wales. As of the 1901 Wales census, he is still single. James is mentioned in a 1911 letter written from his brother John to his older sister, Johanna here in the States and it seems James was still single at that time. Do you have any other information on your James McNamara i.e age, where born, etc.
I can send you some of my family group files off list in which I have transcribed several letters written between the Macks in Wales and relatives in the states. There may be something in the letters that you might recognize in connection with your families.

Greetings all.My special thanks to Kathy,Pam,& Ian for the lookups.
It is coincidental that Richard DENNIS was found in Llansamlet in 1851,as that's where his future Wife Elizabeth WILLIAMS was living.
I think the one found with the name of William in 1841,could be the young Richard,as his son was named as William Richard DENNIS,born at Swansea. This W.R;DENNIS followed into his uncle Evan WILLIAMS trade,as he was listed as a "Railway Fireman"in the 1881 census.
The jigsaw puzzle is coming into shape.Thankyou all again for your help.
Kind Regards,Graham.Glam;FHS;#551.

Hello Graham
Ian has given you the 1851 and I can't find Richard in GLA 1841, so assume he was still
in MON. Unfortunately that hasn't been indexed yet so I looked at possible DENNIS
marriages in the Gwent FHS pre-1837 marriage index and found these:
Benjamin DENNIS/Kezia THOMAS both of Trevethin, m 31 March 1828 @ Trevethin
John DENNIS of Skirrid m. Hannah THORLEY of Crosseny, 21 May 1814 @ Crossenny
They may be useful if you can find the family in 1841.

Dear Listers and Pam in particular,
I have seen the emails from Pam relating to
Morris/McCarthy/MacNamamra/Griffiths/Hafodyrynys/Risca.
These are names and places I have an interest in but I haven't replied
before now because most of the names aren't connected even in my own tree! It
does seem odd though that these names have appeared in someone else's line so
here are some of the names as they occur in my tree in case they have I
relevance that I can't see:
I have a Martha McCarthy (ca1838 - 1864) who married William Cordey (1832 -
1880)
These two were from the Risca area and are buried in the grounds of one of
the churches there. William was the brother of my Great-Great-Grandmother.
I have a James McNamara who was married in 1917 to Nellie Ada Smith from
Kent.
My Griffith family are from Caernarfonshire but I keep an eye out for one
who went missing in 1887 and was never found!
I have connections with Hafodyrynys but I do not know know Springfield
Terrace - perhaps it is in the nearby village of Swffryd.
Most of my Morris ancestors were from Abercarn(e), Risca, Machen and
surrounding areas and yesterday I posted one branch of them to the list in the hope
that someone may recognise them, but have had no reply, so I can only assume
that they are not known to anyone.
Perhaps you see what I mean about the tenuous links and I am not expecting
anything to come of this email, just wanted to respond "in case"!
Best Wishes,
Judith
Is it very unusual for a census to show a member of a family by a different sex and name? In the 1851 census I have a son of the family aged 20 changed from male to female Does Hannah sound at all like Thomas? The only thing I can think of was that the parents both spoke Welsh and the census was taken in an English part of Monmouthshire.
Linda
Hi,
The dates that you mention is in what I call the old part of the cemetery, a
lot of the area is unsafe and it depends if they had a headstone placed at
the grave because not all could afford to have one erected.
That section of the cemetery is still under the Church and records would be
kept by them, it's only the new part that is under the County Council.
Regards Barbara
Dear listers:
Happy Thanksgiving from those of us in the States; our holiday to honor the first pilgrims who came to this country and also, a celebration of the harvest and giving thanks for all the good things we have. We are also having our first snow of the year.
I have been diligently working on my family genealogy (surname MacNamara-Mack) to give as a Christmas gift to my father, my aunt and my uncle, the last three members with the Mack surname in my lineage. My grandfather, Matthew Mack and his 9 siblings were all born and raised in Wales of Irish parents.
As our Christmas celebration and dinner will be held at my home, I would like to incorporate some Welsh Christmas traditions into the festivities. I have read about the Mari Lwyd and Calennig customs, but I would like more information (as we say from the horse's mouth) on traditional Welsh Christmas foods (recipes please), decorations, songs (we inherited the Welsh singing gene), poems, etc. that would be used on Christmas in a Welsh home.
As I know this post may cause a flurry of replies, I apologize in advance to those listers who do not think this pertains to family genealogy. I think knowing how our ancestors lived and celebrated is as important as the facts and statistics.
Sincerely,
Pam (Mack) Nixon
