I have Coleman/Coalman/Colman families which "began"(as far as my
research has proved to date) in the area around Chippenham, Wilshire, in
very early 1700s, wandered into South Gloucestershire east of Bristol
early-mid 1800s, then to Risca area of MON mid-1840s, moving around in
the general area and some ending up in/near Trevethin, MON, 1850s, with
my 2X great-grandmother, Elizabeth Coleman Williams, in Pennsylvania
then Wyoming, US, 1860-1905. Most of the time were laborers (early) then
coal miners and families. The Coleman first names which repeat over
generations include William, Philip, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary/Maria, John,
James, Ruth, Diana/Dinah, Robert, George, Ann. Allied surnames in
England (many spelling variations for all) are Bryant, Offer, Broadway,
Olive, Crook, Ralph (last two Coleman second marriages with added
children). Happy to answer specific queries. Sally,
Hi Josephine,
I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. In the past, when I have
endeavoured to answer a query to a list member, on several to which I am
subscribed, there is nothing I like better than to hear a synopsis of their findings,
which also leads me to keep a lookout for further evidence I can find, because
those names seem to stick in my head.
On the receiving end though, if someone has helped me out, then I make a
point of telling them how their findings fit in with my own research. Sometimes
all this interacting can lead to bigger and better things over time. Just
think about it, how can anyone take a real interest in a person or family by
just reading a name on a census return etc.,?
All the best,
Maureen Jenkins

Would SKS look up the 1841 and 1851 Monmouthshire Census maybe for the
Trevethin/Panteg area for the following two families.
1/ John Murray born Ireland age ?
Wife ?
Son James born in Ireland abt 1809
2/ Cornelius Murray born Ireland age ?
Wife ?
Daughter Margaret born Ireland abt 1815
James Murray married Margaret Murray in 1849 in St Albans, Pontypool. I am trying to find out their mothers names and any other siblings.
Thanks Margaret in Cardiff.
Hi Listers,
Recently, there was a request for information on the Monmouthshire list,
which was also sent to a number of other Welsh lists. I replied to it via
another list. When there was no response, I didn't send any further
information.
Some family history researchers, on the genealogy mailing lists, don't
realize the advantages of striking up a correspondence with those list
members who supply answers to their queries.
What has prompted this post is that I saw the name of Lorraine in Ottawa
on the Monmouthshire list this morning. Lorraine and I have been
corresponding since 1999 on the Bristol_and_Somerset list. I look out for
the families she is researching, when I sift through the resources, and
she looks out for mine when she is poring over parish registers.
Obtaining an answer to a query, via a genealogy list, could be just the
start of even more information to come, if the recipient takes a moment to
respond.

Hi All,
I've been contacted by someone who is just starting to research their
family history in Newport and is asking for help.
Unfortunately the name they are researching is JONES :-)
I seem to remember that there is a web site devoted to the name, but have
been unable to find it, despite several 'Googles'.
There are hundreds of individual sites containing JONES but the one I'm
after is a JONES-only site.
Does anyone know the URL?
Cheers,
Glyn Hale

There must be a Jones List at Rootsweb. In fact I'm betting that there are
several! At last count I think I found four different Davis lists.

G'day and aHappy Australia Day to all Aussies.
My first time in requesting info, I'm continuing the work from another family member.
I am researching Aaron Coleman,my husbands'GG Grandfather. I have conflicting info. One says he was born in 1807 in Monmouthshire England. The other in 1809 in St. George Gloucester. England.or St Geroge Gloucestershire Wales. I have that he married an Elizabeth Goalden in 1834 (even that is abit sketchy) another spelling is Golden,Goulding.
He is said to have died 11th July.1873 in Wales.
I have it that at least two of his son came to Australia, one of which is my husbands' Great Grandfather George Coleman. His birth was in 1847 in Wales.
Hoping for answers. Valerie from Sydney Australia

Hi MIck,
I did some research on COLEMAN for another Monmouthshire lister on
Wednesday 26th. March 2003 and on Tuesday 1st. April 2003.
If you check the Monmouthshire list archives for the following titles you
may pick up something of interest:

Hi list
Trying to find Emma Holder/Howldey/Owley in 1851 Census. She married in
Blaenavon in 1862 age 21, so would only be about 10. Her father was Mathew
Holder, blacksmith, probably the one in Gloucester in 1851. Some of the
family moved to Panteg, so is Emma could be with one of them in 1851.
Is there an index someone can look up for me?
Many thanks

Hi everyone
I'm trying to trace a baptism for Thirza CHIVERS or CULLEN (she was born
before marriage). It is thought that Martha CHIVERS, mother of Thirza, travelled
from Coleford, SOM to stay with friends (or family?) in Garndiffaith prior to
the birth of Thirza. Martha later married the father Benjamin CULLEN.
I would be grateful if anyone could look up a baptism for Thirza in the
Garndiffaith area 1849-1853
Thank you
Peter Jenkins

Hi Valerie,
It's more likely that he was born in St. George, Gloucestershire. Children
with the surnames COLEMAN and GOLDING were being baptized in St. George in
the second decade of the 19th century.

Yes, they were married in the parish church of Trevethin on 5th. July 1834.
> He is said to have died 11th July.1873 in Wales.
Aaron was still in the parish of Trevethin at the time of the 1871 census
when he was living in Garndiffaith. He was 62 and Eliza was 55.
Perhaps another lister will do a look up on the 1871 census for Aaron
COLEMAN and his family. They were at census reference RG10/5334 89 34.
A look up would give you their birthplaces
> I have it that at least two of his son came to Australia, one of which

Aaron and Eliza had a number of children. In 1851, children in their
household were Joseph Clark, 14, Allen 10 (whom I think might have been
William), Reuben, 9, Jane Ann, 7, George 3 and Hester 5.
By 1861, they had had another child, Emily, who was 8. That year there was
a 21-year-old William in their household whom I suspect was the 10-year-old
Allen of the 1851 census.
> Hoping for answers. Valerie from Sydney Australia
Hope I've given you some:-)
As well as an 1871 look up, you could do with 1851 and 1861 look ups.
COLEMAN census reference for 1851 is HO107/2449 21 512 .
COLEMAN census reference for 1861 is RG9/4009 11 21.
Surname indexes of the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Monmouthshire censuses are
available for purchase from Gwent Family History Society.
Happy hunting!

Hi everyone
My Grandmother was heavily pregnant at the time of her marriage in 1909 at
the Register Office in Newport, Mon. She was born at Cwmtillery but residence
at marriage was Devonshire House, Newbridge, Mon. Neither of her parents, who
were alive at the time, attended.
Does anyone know if Devonshire House was a large family home employing
servants or a hostel for "wayward" women.
Thankyou
Peter Jenkins
Gwent FHS is in the process of indexing the 1841 Census for the old county
of Monmouthshire, I have no date for completion of this task yet.
The 1861 Census index is now available on CD-ROM

Hi Listers. I am just asking whether anyone can do a 1841 Mon, look up for me.
I am not sure if there is one.
I am waiting for the release of the 1861 Mon disks.
thanking you Moe.
Hi,
Solomon Allender is in the 1844 Slater's Directory as a grocer in Agincourt Square Monmouth.
I discovered this after I'd order the 1851 census for Christchurch at the LDS. He was buried there in 1858.
This morning I went through the film and he isn't there. If anyone has the index for 1851 for Monmouth town I'd be grateful if they could tell me if he was there.

Hello to all,
My great grandfather was Thomas JONES, born at Panteg c 1828/31 to
William JONES, a mason by trade. That is as much as I know about his
early life. I don't even know his mother's name.
Thomas JONES went on to become a puddler and lived most of his life in
the Abersychan area. His first wife died and he married my great
grandmother, Harriet NEEDS, Abersychan. I know about this time in his life.
Could anyone help me identify the birth of Thomas JONES of Panteg to
William, a mason, and mother not known by me. According to the marriage
certificate of Thomas to Harriet, his father, William, was deceased by 1867.
Any help would be gratefully received. I would be delighted to be able
to identify my great great grandparents !
Jocelyn Griffiths now living in Pembrokeshire.
