Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear Janet,
I showed your listing to my husband as some of the details rang a bell.
My husband's father, Frank Morgan worked for South Wales Building, known
affectionately as SWB, in Dock Street, Newport from approx 1950-1964.
My husband's uncle Harry was the manager of SWB and New Age Fireplaces, which
was a subsidary. SWB had branches in Newport, Cardiff and Swansea. As well as
selling all building materials, they manufactured tile fireplaces and also had
a Formica laminate distributorship.
Percy Jones was known as PJ. His son Ron was the General Manager of the
business and John Fooks was the Company Secretary.
PJ had a very successful business and made a lot of money during WWII. He drove
a Rolls Royce and his son Ron drove an E Type Jag.
My husband thinks that PJ lived in Ridgeway, an upmarket suburb of Newport.
Hope this info fills in a few gaps.

I purchased one of them (CD2) direct from Carmarthenshire Family History
Society.

The quality is as good as I have seen on any census CD. They are images of
the original enumerators' returns and are in .pdf format. (Adobe Reader 5
is included).

If anyone in the area of York is thinking of visiting the FH Fair on
Saturday - Knavesmire Stand at the Racecourse. Please stop at the Gwent
FHS stand and say hello. I will be there with my long suffering husband
- he does all the driving - and we will be delighted to talk to you and
show you the latest publications from the Society.

Dear Listers,
I've just uploaded a new set of seventeen 'Images of Wales' photographs onto
my website.
The images, spread over two webpages, show the lonely and remote Brychgoed
Independent Chapel and its graveyard, near the village of Heol Senni in the
parish of Defynnog, Breconshire. The chapel is situated high up on a ridge
in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The photographs were taken last month.
'Images of Wales' is at http://home.clara.net/wfha/walespic/
Enjoy!! :o)
Best wishes,
John

Hi all
Am new to this list. I'm trying to get info on the Yates family. There are a
lot of Yates listed in the Newport M district. My mother AnnEdith Yates was
born there (Dec 1930) as was her father Alfred Henry Yates (march 1897) He
married Iris Amy Seldon but later they moved to Bournemouth which was then
in Hampshire (now Dorset)
I believe he worked in the coal mines there. When my mother was alive she
mentioned (so about the spelling here!) the ronda valley, abercarn ebbw
vale, so I guess they lived around this area. There was also a story told to
me that he had an accident in the mines and was paid compensation. Maybe
there is a record of this.
I have a problem. I live in New Zealand which couldn¹t be much farther away
if I tried!
Anybody with any suggestions as to how I find out a bit more about where
they lived etc I would greatly appreciate.
First let me apologise for the delay in answering some questions, NTL
seems to be on a go slow at the moment and I am not receiving my mail as
quickly as I should.
The 1861 Census Index covers the whole of the county - except the areas
where the books were lost or destroyed. the CD is available on Parish
Chest. here's how to get to it.
On the parish Chest homepage click on Family History Societies in the
side bar, then
click on Gwent FHS in the main screen, then
click on Census Indexes on CD-ROM and you will find the 1861 Census
Index CD is top of the list
Now the Marriage INdex. There is a marriage Index for Monmouthshire
1813-1837. this is available on Fiche indexed by Bride or Groom each
index is 7 fiche and costs 7GBpounds. It is available on CD-ROM but I
don't have any copies of it yet so there will be a delay. The marriage
index CD costs 10 GBpounds plus postage and packing 75p UK. As soon as I
have the disks it will go onto Parish Chest and FFHS
Hi
Has anyone bought the census cd's for Monmouthshire 1841 from Parish Chest?
Just wondering what the quality is like - I cannot find any info with
regards to their format. Are they filmed from the original handwritten
census or from the fiche.
Could not find their listing for the 1861 Index cd mentioned on an earlier
list mail.
Regards
Chris
Hi folk,
Can anyone with a copy of the 1861 census of Risca help me out here please.
I am researching the descendants of William HODGES who was born 1809 in Risca, Mon. He married Mary ?? on the 4thOct. 1834 and they had 4 children --
Joseph b. 1836 Machen
Eliza b. 1838 Machen
Charlotte b. 1845 Risca
William b. 1847 Risca
William's death certificate dated 1855 shows him to have been an Innkeeper at Church House, Risca. After this date the family seems to have disappeared, that is with the exception of the oldest child Joseph whom I have found and researched.
The Church House Inn seems to have passed into the hands of a Harris or a Duffield.
With thanks,
Llew
The lack of list mail might make us think that we have been removed from
the list for some reason. Rather than sending a test message to the list
- which takes up space in the archives - the easiest way to find out
what is happening is to go to the Rootsweb home page at
www.rootsweb.com
and click on the help tab at the top of the page. there you will find
notice of any breakdowns or hold ups in mail. If you want to know if you
are still on a list then click on the Passwords tab at the top of the
homepage and follow the instructions there.

thankyou for letting me know how to check if im still subscribed to the
group. I find using rootsweb a pain there are so many pop up boxes offering so
many things for sale that i spend most of the time deleting them. if anyone
knows how to stop them please let me know!
Im looking for information on a Harriet Watkins who may have been born in
Monmouthshire or Herefordshire about 1829, her fathers name was John watkins &
he was a farmer, i would like to find her birth date & mothers name ive tried
the local record office & the family history sites on the internet but no
luck. Harriet later married Edmund Maddox on the 10th june 1859 in
Herefordshire but again i cannot find any info about her from the marriage. If anyone
is researching the name Watkins or can advise me where else i could look
please get in touch. Keith.
This is the best news to come home to. The 1861 Census Index compiled by
the late Ray Allen - who will be deeply missed by Society members - is
now available on CD-ROM. It is already on Parish Chest website and could
well be on FFHS online shop but their site doesn't like my browser so I
can't get in.
The cost of the CD is 10GBpounds plus postage and packing of 75p UK -
overseas members who purchase through Parish Chest or FFHS will have the
postage added to the cost of their order.
the index is Surname, forename, age, Registration District, film number,
folio number and page number.

I am still trying to find information about William ANDREWS married to Margaret KERR in Newport M 1851. A daughter Emily (my gg-mother) born Hill St, Newport M March 1853. I have no further information regarding siblings and cannot find William or Margaret on 1881 Census.
William was an upholsterer and probably served as an apprentice. Can anyone tell me if there is a list of apprentices anywhere for Newport please? Apparently there is a lot of information there.
Thanks for any help. Gill Milton, NZ
Hi,
Is anyone searching for the name MURRAY?
A friend who is a builder made an interesting find in the Newport area
recently. He was clearing some ground ready for building work when he unearthed
an old gravestone and will be delighted if someone recognises the name.
The stone bears the words
JOHN MURRAY
Died 18 November 1724
aged 42
Here's hoping!
