Message for Mike John - to say a big thank you for the help you have
given me in tracing the Witherall family.
I have sent a couple of email messages to you but they have all been
returned. It appears that for some reason our servers do not wish to
communicate!!
Thanks & all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Hi all,
If someone were shown (in the IGI) as having been baptised in "Wesleyan,
Abergavenny, Monmouth" ca 1819, which church would be the most likely one?
Thank you

Hi everyone,
My thanks to Kathy for looking up the details of my "lost" boy. Sadly it was not him but I am very grateful for her help - at the very least I can cross this one off and eliminate him.
Thank you
Gwyn
Hi everyone,
Am still searching for my "lost" boy in 1891 and wondered if there was a very kind person with access to the details of the 1891 census who would be willing to look up
William A JONES age 9 Birthplace, Monmouthshire - County, Monmouthshire
This is a very long shot.
William Albert was actually born in St Briavels - but may not have known that - his mother has died. His father is in Bristol at the time together with his new wife and also his sister.
Thanks - Gwyn
Hi all
I was recently asked on another list how I went about finding out
details of my mother's adoption. I thought perhaps others could be
interested and also some of the questions I still have may prompt some
response, particularly as the events took place in Glamorgan and
Monmouthshire so if you recognise any of the names I would be very
pleased to here from you.
I knew from an early age that my mother Olga Powell (maiden name
Bailey) was adopted but she would not talk about it, presumably out of
loyalty to her adoptive parents. When I told her I would like to
research the family tree she was not keen at all, so I put it off until
a few years after she died in 1997.
I had her adoption certificate which told me that she was adopted by
order of the Petty Sessional Division Court Dinas Powis 4 May 1928, her
adoptive parents names and address Tom and Eva Bailey, Penarth; her
name was Olga and her date of birth was 3 May 1924. She was adopted on
the day after her 4th birthday. Obviously no information on her birth
parents or surname at birth.
My first step was to find out what is the current version of the Court
that issued the Adoption order, this is now the Vale of Glamorgan
Magistrates Court. I wrote to the Clerk of the Court to ask permission
to see the record of the adoption. They replied that I would have to
contact the Vale of Glamorgan Council Adoption and Fostering Service
for approval first. I wrote to the Service and they telephoned me and
said they had no problems with me seeing the records.
The Clerk of the Court was informed and wrote to me giving me
permission to access the records which were held at Glamorgan Records
Office. The record was eventually sent to me which at first glance was
very sparse and did not look as if it would not be any help. It gave
the names of the adoptive parents Tom and Eva Bailey, the name of her
Guardian at the time - Frank Warburton and his address in Beryl Street,
Barry and the information that her mother could not be found. I then
noticed that it gave my mother's name as Olga Powell - I had not
noticed this immediately as this was the name I knew my mother by - my
father was George Powell!!! (I changed the spelling of my surname from
Powell to ap Hywel 30 years ago)
I found the birth of just one Olga Powell in the GRO index for June
Quarter 1924 but was puzzled because the birth was registered in
Abergavenny and my mother always claimed to be born in Penarth. The
mystery was solved when the certificate arrived, it was definitely my
mother - date of birth 3 May 1924, "adopted" was written in the margin,
her mother was Agnes Maud Powell of West Terrace, Penarth, no father
recorded. Place of birth was 111 Elgam Avenue, Blaenavon. The birth
was registered as "per declaration" which meant that Agnes registered
the birth at the Penarth Register Office who sent the details to the
Abergavenny Office where the birth should have been registered.
I have been able to trace all of Agnes's family back to the beginning
of registration in 1837, (and was quite pleased to learn that my
mothers' Powells and fathers' Powells were unrelated!) but quite a few
mysteries remain to be solved - who was her father? (my grandfather) -
no luck with that - yet!, Who was Frank Warburton? - according to the
electoral registers he and his wife Ethel were living in Beryl Street,
Barry until 1928 then they moved. Why was Olga born in Blaenavon?
Again according to electoral registers Alfred Joseph and Mary Ellis
(formerly O"Brien) were the occupiers of 111 Elgam Avenue in 1924 -
what relationship there was between them and Agnes I have not been able
to discover..
None of my research has made the slightest difference to the feelings I
have for my mother or my "Nan" (her adoptive mother) at all. Hope this
is of interest and some use to you.
best wishes

Redbrook is in the Forest of Dean and is 'extra-parochial', i.e. outside a
parish. The forest consists of a triangle formed by the Rivers Severn and
Usk and comes under Gloucester FHS who I'm sure would be most willing to
help.

Hello Gwynne,
I know of two people born in Redbrook, Gloucestershire who later married
just across the border in Penallt, Monmouthshire. Other members of the my
family born in Penallt were married at Coleford Baptist Chapel in
Gloucestershire, very close to Redbrook. Another parish worth trying is
Llandogo in Monmouthshire. They certainly didn't seem to treat the
County/Country boundaries as any barrier.
Good luck with your search,
Lynda
PS I'm still searching for the baptism of my great great grandfather James
BALDWIN who was born about 1823 in Whitebrook, Mons (his father was shown on
James' marriage certificate as Benjamin MORRIS). I am beginning to wonder
if he was baptised at all as an infant as he married in a Baptist Chapel. I
hope you have better luck than me!

A quick note to thank everyone who has responded to my request for information on Ruth Evans from 1871 and 1861 census's. I have had information from a number of listers which is great and have filled in the gaps.
Thanks all

The Newport Branch of Gwent FHS have indexed the 1871 census for the whole
of the old county of Monmouthshire ( the 1851 and 1861 censuses are also
indexed). At the moment the 1871 index is only available on microfiche but
the intention is to transfer it to CD-ROM some time in the not too distant
future. The fiche are available from
http://www.genfair.comhttp://www.parishchest.com
as are all the other publications produced by Gwent FHS

Hi
I am new to this list and am currently working on my husband's side of the
family.
I am interested to find WEAVER surname references on the 1871 census of
Newport. I am particulary interested in finding William and Elizabeth
Weaver
with their children Albert, Charles, William and Frank.
No sure what info is available without going to record offices. I know
some
areas have 1871 censuses available to purchase or at least census indexes
available but not sure on Monmouthside as this area is new to me.
Any help gratefully received.
Regards
Jayne Weaver
David,
You appear to have changed your email address, if you read this would you please contact me re. Chard family history, we have a connection.
Thank You, Mal Chard
Thank you to those who replied to my query. Maybe my uncle got the regiment
wrong. Unfortunately he was the last remaining son of my grandfather and he
also has now passed away. Before he died he had given me a bundle of photos
(the vast majority unidentified). It has made me go through my family's
photos and identify and, equally important, date them. It also helps to
mention the occasion and where they were taken.
I am new to the list (but have now resubscribed to digest mode). I am amazed
at the help that is so freely given. A big "thank you" to all concerned.
Bevelyn

I know it is along shot and a great deal to ask as Evans is such a coomon name but I am stuck with the following. Can anyone help please?
I am looking for the family of Ruth Ester Evans in 1871 and possibly 1861.
She was, according to the 1881 census born in Trevethin, Monmouth and would have been circa 14 years old in 1871 and 4 in 1861(born Abt 1857). She married John Young in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire in the March quarter of 1881 so is listed in the 1881 census living with her husband in Llanhilleth.
Any trace of her and her family before marriage would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ivor

Has anyone copies of the RISCA 1861 Census that they could search for Elizabeth, please?
