On the Glamorgan Strays List is the following:- HARRY Will born Rumney
11/1827 AG 34, Also wife Mary 1837 Castleton Bap. Gwent.
The only Castleton on the GENUKI site refers to St Athan, but the atlast
shows Castleton near St Mellons, St Brides Wentlooge area. Would appreciate
help in establishing which is correct and if anyone knows where the P.Rs are
kept - i.e. Cardiff or Cwmbran.
Many thanks.
I have asked AOL why they have blocked e-mail from Roots Web today, they
say they have reported it to their e-mail dept and for list admin's to contact :

to report the problem.
Hope this helps

AOL, in their misguided attempts to protect their members from spam, uses a
discredited tactic known as server-wide blocking. In other words, if any AOL
user reports getting a spam message from any address ending in
"rootsweb.com" AOL will block all Rootsweb messages from reaching all AOL
subscribers. Worse than that, they don't really even check to see if the
offending message is really spam, or that it really came from a Rootsweb
server. And they put the burden on a legitimate provider, such as Rootsweb,
to contact them to fix the problem, which isn't really Rootsweb's problem,
but is caused by AOL's really poor attempts at reducing spam.
As an AOL user, you need to ask yourself the question, "How many other
legitimate messages did AOL block?" And even more importantly, "Why do I pay
AOL to block messages that I actually want to receive?"

It depends upon what you want for your conversion. Dave Nicholas suggestion
is one method that will work as long as you don't want to be able to search
the text on the microfilmed image. If you want to convert image to text and
then convert that text so that a computer will allow you to search it for
key words you will probably have to undertake a three stage process. The
first stage will be something like Dave's and the second would be converting
your digital camera image to paper (preferably laser printed) at as high a
definition as you can manage. The third stage would be converting your paper
image through the use of an OCR program (Omnipage Pro is great but
expensive) into a text file.
That way you can search for the key words in the file and cut and paste
content into other programs.
The quality of your original microfilmed image, your photographic image and
your printed image is critical. A poor image at any stage will cause you to
tear your hair and stand in the corner and scream and stamp your feet. I
know, I've already done the exercise.
Hope this helps.

Can anyone suggest an economic method of converting 35mm microfilm onto a
CD?
Any suggestions would be most helpful.
Thank you David
= = = = = = = =
My thoughts on this: projecting of roll 35 mm in a slide projector
modified for the task used to be quite a common thing, particularly in
Sunday schools. That is to say, slide film that has not been cut into
individual slides but is all-together on a roll.
If you were to project this 35 mm film onto a surface in dim light, and then
just use a cheap digital camera secured to a tripod, those projectors (there
should be some around somewhere, since I have one in my basement) - they go
"clik, clik" quickly from frame to frame, and the digital camera could just
as quickly take the frames to Jpeg - for just text, less than 2megapixels
should be more than adequate. 1.3 megapixels is = XVGA and is what i use
(not for this, tho)

This is another side of my family that I can't continue on with until I get
information. This is my paternal side BLACK. Sometime in the 1860's my great
great grandparents John BLACK , born about 1823 in Pennsylvania and his wife
Sarah born about 1828 in Pennsylvania disapeared from sight. The 1870
Pennsylvania census had what children were still not out on their own living with a
married sister Mary L Black/EVANS. I searched the 1850 census for John and Sarah
hoping that I could glean more information and noticed that they had a Michael
D. SMITH age 15 would have been born around 1835 - who was born in
WALES.living with them. So, maybe John's Mother was a SMITH or Sarah was a SMITH.
There was a Small Pox epidemic in Pennsylvania in the 1860's and that might
be what happened to John and Sarah, or a accident? I have searched through
everything I could think of to try and find out. I do not know John's fathers name
or where he was born and that is why I am hoping that someone is researching
a SMITH family and is wondering what happened to Michael.
This is kind of crazy I know, but I really don't know what else to do. I am
stumped with the BLACK side I get further information. If anyone is
researching a SMITH or a BLACK please contact me. Thats the longshot. Hope I'm on the
right list.

Hello John
Can you help again? How do you pronounce "Mam-gu".
My Uncle has helped me with Nain, Taid and Dad-cu / Tad-cu, but not Mam-gu.
Maybe if you have the time for us "Yanks", you could give us a word a day to
learn.
Thanks again John

Does anyone know anything about the family of William Henry WELLS,I believe he married Sussannah CLARKE in December quarter of 1899 in Newport. He was a soldier and must have died fairly soon as Susannah remarried in 1901 .Sussannah had a daughter about the time of the first marriage Gertrude COOMBES CLARKE -presumably from a relationship with a Mr Coombes .Does this ring a bell with anyone . Any information on either names would be a help and on military casualties about 1900-the African war I believe .Gill in Barry

I was on this list in 2000 and returned, hoping to find the 1841 census available. I checked the archives and found this is not true, but the 1851 is through Gwent FHS. However I am not sure which fiche to order.
July 22 1839 William Morgan widower occ. Tyler father William Morgan a wheelwright married
Margaret Lewis(born Merthyr Tydfil) father Daniel collier
December 1839 James Hall(born Axbridge SOM)Sinker father Thomas Hall farmer married Ann Lewis(born Merthyr Tydfil) father John Lewis skinner
These two couples gave their residence as Rhymney. In the 1841 both couples lived in the same house in Merthyr Tydfil. I cannot find any of the fathers. Wonder if they remained in Rhymney.
I will rent the film for the 1841 from the LDS, but wondering if thye are in the 1851.
Looking for Thomas Hall farmer John Lewis skinner or Daniel Hall collier
all would be 60+ Could someone do a look up or direct me to which fiche to order? Thanks Joan Baltimore Maryland US
Hi Listers,
Just to let you know that I have had very speedy replies to my request for
information on the Leishman/Leichman/Leachman family of Blaenavon and I now
have full Monmouthshire census details on them for 1861, 1871, 1881 and
1891.
I have replied individually to the list members who answered my request and
am very grateful for the wonderful response I've had today.
Will be pursuing the maternal side of this family over on the other side of
the Severn in Oldland, Bitton, Gloucestershire.

Hi Pam,
Many thanks for your speedy reply to my request. This is a great help as
Mary's age indicates that her 1881 census age of 70 is inaccurate.
In 1851 she was recorded as 33, in 1861, her age was 40 and here in 1871
her age is 50.
This is a great help as, since receiving your look-up, I have now been
able to pinpoint a possible baptism for Mary on 18th. August 1822 at
Oldland, Bitton with parents Aaron and Ann BUSH.
The 1871 census information also tells me that Mary's husband, Robert, had
died. There's also a newcomer to the family in the 2-year-old grandson,
John, but he doesn't appear in the 1881 census so perhaps he died, too.
All things to ponder on! :-)
Josephine

Are you sure that it's Lands End?
There are a number of Lane End's in the civil parish of West Dean.
