Llerhowey would seem to be Sirhowy, which in 1821 was the name for Tredegar
Ironworks area, I think. This may well have been within the Abergavenny
Wesleyan Circuit. The baptism may have been in a smaller chapel, but the
Circuits seem to have had one baptism register for all the chapels. May
well be the same.
I expect a local like Barrie, or Richard Roynon, will give you a more
definitive answer.

Could I ask someone to search for my ancestors in the 1891 census for St Woollos, Newport?
The family name is MANLEY
Richard and Mary C Manley both originated from Braunton, Devon born 1811 and 1812 respectively, and their son William R Manley born Braunton 1848.
In the 1881 census Richard and Mary lived in 37 Capel Street, St Woollos, while William R Manley lived in James Street.
I do have a feeling that Richard and Mary may have died, but if I'm lucky they lived long enough to be entered on the 1891 census. .
Thanks in advance

dear list,
I have just found out from an elderly relative that my
Ggrandfather served in the first World war and suffered shell shock for which he
received treatment at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol after his discharge. I should
like to find out more about his military career and wondered how I would go
about accessing any records that might be available. I do not know his regiment
or even if he volunteered or was conscripted. He was a resident of Newport
before and after the war so could anyone tell me which regiment I should be
looking at. I know his name and date of birth but this is all the info i have on
him. As always your advice as to how I should proceed would be greatly
appreciated.
best wishes

Hi Listers - a recent family tale tells us of how my great- and grand-parents
lived in a house in Baneswell in which a man called Major Cheeseman hung
himself. Does anyone know of this poor man or knows of his story?

There was also a daughter Margaret born c1831 in MON who married Mathias

Thank you very much for your efforts to help me find out more about this

Hi folks
Is anyone researching SCRIVENS from Newchurch, near Chepstow?
I have in 1881 living at The Glyn Road, East Newchurch
Samuel SCRIVENS widow aged 62 born Howick, Monmouth
Margaret SCRIVENS dau aged 12 born Newchurch east
Margaret married Charles COTTRELL in Dec qtr 1889 in Newport. Charles and Margaret were my gg grandparents.
I think samuel had died by 1901 as I cannot find him in the census. I have searched the IGI and freeBMD with no luck.
Does anyone know where The Glyn Road is or anyone recognise any of the above?
If its possible for anyone to search earlier censuses I'd be very grateful.
Kind Regards
Dave

==================
Dear Douglas (and Mark)
"Mynyddislwyn, town of Clauepluyf" is a misreading of Clawrplwyf, a
hamlet in the parish of Mynyddislwyn. It was marked on the Ordnance
Survey "First Edition" 1:10,560-scale maps published in the 19th
century. Kain and Oliver (2001) identify it at SO200000 which places it
roughly halfway between Blackwood and Abertillery.
Assuming the above information is correct, you should be able to find
Clawrplwyf marked on the 19th century 1:10,560-scale maps accessible at
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ where you should select the "Co-ordinates"
option and enter 320000,200000 (without any spaces) into the search
field. It is not marked on more recent Ordnance Survey maps
Clawrplwyf is also listed in the gazetteer of Tallis's Topographical
Dictionary of England and Wales (linked from my Welsh Family History
Archive portal). Tallis (published in 1860) describes Clawrplwyf as a
hamlet of 2006 people situated five miles from Pontypool.

Hi Barrie
No information about the family but there are photos of Skyms Row, Ebbw Vale in Keith Thomas' 'Old Ebbw Vale in Photographs' Vol 1 I think! Happy to scan and send if they are of Interest. Apparently Skyms Row and Needham Row were built to house workers from Beaufort Ironworks.

Hello List
I've traced a number of ancestors & relatives (BREEZE / WILLIAMS / FLOWER) to "Celynen Row" on the 1891 census. It must be in the Abercarn - Newbridge area.
Can anyone pin-point the location? The numbers seem to go up into the 40's at least.
So far, my trusty "Old Maps" & MultiMap sites have failed me with this address,

Would someone with access to the Mon 1841 census kindly do a lookup for a Thomas Elijah Powell, wife Catherine and a 14 year old son, Thomas - and possibly other siblings? I would be ever so grateful. Thank you so much in advance.

Hello Denise,
Their was a Golden Lion public House in Abergavenny that I can remember from my early years,I was born 1947.It existed until approximately 1975.It then became the Sugar Loaf public house,it is currently a shop.I actually played darts in their against their team.It was situated near the corner of Frogmore Street and Lion Street
There was another public house opposite called The Saint David.Maybe it will appear on one of the old map sites?Best of Luck,
Malcolm.

==============
Dear Denise,
The relevant 1881 census entry gives you the answer. It records the
address thus:
Golden Lion Public House, 6 Frogmore Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
The head of the household in 1881 was Samuel Peers, innkeeper, aged 38,
born Cristleton, Cheshire, England.
Moreover, a Google search using the words Golden Lion Abergavenny found
the on-line 1901 Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire in which is listed
the following entry (at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyalbum/kenny6a.htm):
BELL, James, Golden Lion P.H., 6 Frogmore street, Abergavenny.
Kind regards,
John
