Subject to my last email re the availability of census on CD for
Monmouthshire. I have no commercial interest in the product, just as
another research tool to help our Family History Society visitors and
members at our local Ebbw Vale Branch of Gwent FHS.
Monmouthshire 1891 is available at 49.95 GB pounds *now* at S&N.
*Advanced orders* are being taken for 1841,1851,1861,1901 at 34.95 GB
pounds. The price will go up the extra 10 pounds when they are available
of course.
There is an option to buy the 1841,1851,1861,1871,1891 as a bundle for
150 GB pounds. The 1901 is excluded from the package however.
I bought the 1841 census for Breconshire on CD (2 CD set) from
Carmarthenshire FHS as a pre-order of 22 GB pounds, 30 GB pounds on
availability. Monmouthshire 1841 is available mid June. Pre-orders are
the same as 1841 Breconshire. Their sales are on Parish Chest as are
Powys and Herefordshire and other family history societies appearing
almost daily. Of course the quality is only as good as the original
fiche, some non-existent, some blank, some obscure, some blots, bad
handwriting. You know, the usual 'quality' that researchers and
transcribers have to put up with daily;)
Gwent FHS are indexing the 1841,1851, 1871 at present. The 1861 being
completed and the 1891 is available as a street index. All will be
available on fiche. See web site in signature below.
The scanned images of the census will be another option for volunteer
transcribers, to transfer to database and hence Indexes, more easily.
e.g. Transcribing from paper copy print-out instead of microform
reader:))
best regards

It is a 4 box CD set, the scanned images from original PRO film. It is a
good buy, but of course being scanned it is not fully searcheable.

Dear List,
I think I have made the breakthrough which I have been hoping would come along for the past two years. My great-grandmother Mabel JONES was born in Pontypridd (Glam.) in 1904. Her birth certificate names her parents as James Henry JONES and Elizabeth JONES formerly WATERS. Mabel was married in 1927 when she was living in Cwm near Ebbw Vale and where she continued to live (I don't know why she was born in Pontypridd). I had been unable to find the marriage of James and Elizabeth until I recently searched the updated FreeBMD database which shows, in the Dec qtr. of 1902, the marriage of a James Henry JONES and Elizabeth WALTERS in Bedwellty Reg. District with the same volume and page number. It seems as though I have found the marriage at last but it seems that it may have been a second marriage for one or both of them as when they died and were buried in Cwm Cemetery (Eliz. in 1944, James in 1945) their ages indicate dates of birth c. 1863 and 1869 respectively so WA(L)TERS m!
ay not have been Elizabeth's maiden name but her first married name. They only had one other child (William - also lived in Cwm) but I do not know when he was born. I would love to hear from anyone with any information about this couple/family.
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans

The alt key lessons have been very useful - that's why I didn't jump in
and say anything but now we need to get back to the topic of family
history in Monmouthshire and I have a question.
Is there anyone on the list with a good knowledge of Caerleon residents
from 1920s to about 1960. I am trying to find information about William
MCLAUGHLIN. I am told that he was a blacksmith in Caerleon until about
1960. Apparently he had a niece called Mary MCLAUGHLIN and she married
Tom THOMAS.
This is not my family, I am trying to help a new researcher get started
and I thought if I could get this information for him - and tell him
where to see it for himself - he would then have a good start.

Hello List,
I was wondering if anyone who had an interest in Newport had come across the mention of a George E Smith in any capacity.
He was a saddler who lived in Charles street and was born about 1833 in Llanelli, he was married (1854) to Elizabeth nee Barnes. According to my Grandmother, he was known famously throughout Newport as the "Charles Street Politician". His nickname was earned because people came from far and wide to debate with him, to hear, carry away and disseminate his radical views and philosophy. His saddlery being a focal point for local politions.
The only other thing that I know about him is that his father was John, an excise officer.
I would be interested to know if anyone has come across this man or may be related to this family.
Thanks
Deborah
Many thanks to all those who have replied to my
