Thanks to Pam in New Zealand, I have obtained some extra information on my Thomas Williams. However, the Addresses shown in the 1881 and the 1891 confuse me and I wonder if anyone can tell me their actual location.
In the 1881 the address is TY Glas, Newbridge District. From Pam's information, the 1891 shows TY Glas, Clawrplwf, Mynyddislwyn.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I was recently surprised to discover that, at last, one of my ancestors did not come from Yorkshire. On 28th September 1858 John BARKER a vet from Sheffield married Ann WELSH of Slaughterford, in Bath. However Ann's family was not from either Bath or Slaughterford, but from Shirenewton, Monmouthshire. So I am hoping someone can help this Yorkshire born lady with her rather muddled Welsh ancestry.
What I know is as follows:
Ann WELSH was born on 2 April 1838 in Slaughterford where her father was a papermaker. She was the last child born to James WELSH and Ann WILCOCKS. Older siblings, including William c. 9.11.1817 through to Edwin c.19.10.1834 were born in Shirenewton.
James WELSH seems to have used the name Edwin, as well James, and in later life became an innkeeper. He died in August 1865 in Chippenham and his age on the death certificate was given as 74. This would suggest a birthdate of about 1791. However I don't think he really knew his correct age, as birthdates taken from ages given on the cenus vary between 1791 and 1797. His place of birth however was given consistently as Shirenewton.
Ann WILCOCKS might possibly have been a widow when she married, as on her daughter's birth certificate she is described as 'late' WILCOCKS rather than the more usual 'formerly' - or maybe the latter is a Yorkshire usage? She died after 1871 (I plan to find her death through the FRC), but in 1871 was living with her son William in Chippenham, and is listed as widowed, age 70, which would give a birthdate around 1801. However earlier census have her birthdate varying between 1791 and 1799, but again her birthplace is consistently Shirenewton.
Can anyone help me please by finding the marriage between James and Ann, probably around 1816, but possibly not until after 1834 when three siblings were christened together? Also with their births in Shirenewton, and their parentage? Alternatively, if no-one has this information, where does one look for the records?
Thank you for any information or help

Dear list,
I'm still on the trail of John Morgan, a grocer in Tredegar in the 1840's.
He married Mary Ann Roberts (bap. 1804 - Cardiff) circa 1835, presumably in
Bedwellty where all of their chidren were born but the only marriage of a
John Morgan to a Mary Ann that I can find in Bedwellty is in 1834 (8 Dec)
where the bride is Mary Ann JENKINS. Mary Ann was born in 1804, John was
born in about 1813 (in Basaleg) so she was about 9 years older than him and
I'm wondering if perhaps her marriage to John MORGAN was a second marriage
as a young widow of ? JENKINS. Does anyone know if the 1834 marriage entry
says that Mary Ann JENKINS was a widow? John MORGAN was born circa 1813 in
Bassaleg, I have two possible baptisms but no more than that.
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans
The family below are living in Bristol in the 1881 census and give their
birth places as Bristol too.
I have looked for them in the 1851 census of Bristol and surrounding
counties (Gordon Beavington's cd) but I can't find them. They did have a
connection with Caerleon in the late 1850's and I'm wondering if I would
find them there in 1851.
If some kind soul has access to the 1851 census index for Caerleon, I would
be very grateful if they would look for this family:
Elizabeth WILLEY aged 39
Sarah WILLEY " 10
Henry WILLEY " 8
I have bought all the census fiche for Newport but they are not there
either.
Many thanks,
Sue

Can anyone explain, please, why I cannot find an entry for my grandparents on
the 1901 census? I have a birth certificate for Thomas Hill ,born 15th July
1864 at Findon Hill, Witton Gilbert,Co.Durham.His wife Alice (sometimes
called Alice Rose) Hill nee Pritchard was born in Kings Pyon (near Weobley)
Hereford in 1877.They lived in Cwmtillery (and possibly for a while in
Abertillery).Their children were born in Tredegar Terrace,Cwmtillery, from
1902.Thomas Hill worked in,or on top of, the mines.Mother once described him
as an ostler,i.e.working with horses, and he led them up and down the
river.(Ebbw/Tillery).I discovered his youger brother Henry on the census. He
lived in Tredegar Terrace with his family and his mother Rachel, and 4
lodgers!
Rachel Hill is a puzzle. She was in Durham when grandfather Thomas was
born, but the census shows she was born in Bristol. She was born about 1837 as
Rachel Thompson.
Can anyone tell me how to find where my grandparents were in 1901,and also
how to find Rachel Hill`s birth certificate? Her husband was Levi Hill ,my
great grandfather.Ihaven`t been able to find marriage certificates either!
Apparently, Levi,a Jew ,"came over on a boat from Bergen" in the mid 19th
century. I think this was Bergen op Zoom near Amsterdam.
Sorry this is so long and rambling.

Hi List,
I am looking for information on the COLLIER family. I know that Thomas
COLLIER and his wife Martha came to Monmouthshire from Stapleton Gloucester.
They brought their children William, George, Betty, Sarah, Mary, Martha,
Jane and Robert.
I am trying to establish when the family moved to Monmouthshire.
I have found some of them on indexes I purchased from MFHS but I have failed
to find
Martha COLLIER on the 1851 census she would be aged about 63. On the 1861
she is in Pontypool Llangiby with some of the family.
I have checked the 1851 for Dingestow, Pontypool & Llangibby, Pontypool
Trevithin, Newport Caerleon and Mynyddislwyn.
If anyone has any further 1851 indexes they could check to see if they could
find her I would be very grateful.
Kind Regards
Pat
Well Pat, I have compiled a family Tree of COLLIER which includes Pontypool,
Tranch, Griffithstown, etc. The gentleman I compiled this tree for has
unfortunately recently passed away, namely Mr Aubrey Collier.
If you wish to contact me OFF LIST, please do so.

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales', just uploaded onto my
website, features:
1. A miscellany of bridges in various parts of Breconshire, Radnorshire
and Glamorgan. This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in
April 1999 (eight photos).
2. Paintings of scenes in the Upper Swansea Valley near the
Glamorgan-Breconshire border. This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in December 1998 (three pictures).

Dear Listers,
I have just completed my annual check on the validity of e-mail
addresses linked to over 2,660 entries on my 'Welsh Ancestor List'
webpages.
The address check revealed 223 submitters' e-mail addresses which
triggered "Undeliverable Mail" error messages. Consequently, I have
transferred the 325 associated entries from the main Welsh Ancestor List
to a temporary "Deletions List".
To check whether I have removed *your* entries from the List, go to the
'Welsh Ancestor List' and click on the link to the deletions list.
The 'Welsh Ancestor List' is at
http://home.clara.net/wfha/wales/listfram.htm
The deletions list will be removed permanently from my website on 31st
May 2003.
Best wishes,
John

I recently visited the cemetery at Bassaleg Baptist Chapel, hoping to find
the grave of my great grandfather, George Stacey, who was buried there
about 1928. I had no luck - many of the inscriptions have weathered away.
Does anyone have or know of a list of burials there? I've had a look
through the impressive fiche list from Gwent FHS but can't spot anything
which might help.
Hwyl!

Summary of Verbal report to FFHS General Meeting at Exeter.
CIVIL REGISTRATION REVIEW
My thanks to the many Family History Societies and individuals who have
responded to the Civil Registration White Paper supporting the FFHS's
initial response. In February the National Council on Archives met with
Keiron Mahony and Marily Troyano and raised a number of additional issues:
- the need to clarify the status of the ONS Registers and the need to marry
the Civil Registration proposals with proposed national archival
legislation.
- the absence of any funding to implement the proposed transfer of local
registers to local County Record offices.
- serious concern that the White Paper only proposes the digitisation of
secondary records at ONS and not the local registers where the error rate
between the two sets of records may be as high as 10%.
- major concern over retrospective closure of registers already in the
public domain at CROs. Any legislation that is unenforceable is not worth
passing.
- the need for a realistic timetable for the transfer and access of both
modern and historic records as this is likely to be a very complex exercise.
NCA is unconvinced that a viable and reputable bidder can be found in the
not for profit sector to digitise the historic ONS registers.
- NCA feels that local registers should also be digitised.
The meeting also discussed the timetable for implementing the changes. The
NCA were informed that the Consultation Document is still on target for
early summer publication and that the consultation period will end on the
last Friday in October 2003. A Draft Regulatory Reform Order is being
worked on simultaneously to enable the Parliamentary process to be completed
by Easter 2004 with the legislation on the Statute Book by March 2005.
ARCHIVES AWARENESS MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2003
The NCA is holding a meeting at the British Library Conference Centre on
28th April 2003 from 2.00pm - 5.00pm [only 50 places available]. I plan to
go and represent the FFHS. Can Societies please let me have any information
of projects that they are planning or will be involved in during September
as soon as possible?
OSP18 OVERSEAS REGISTRATION
Consultation on the PRO [now National Archives]`s proposals not to preserve
"Duplicate" copies of overseas Birth, Marriage and Death Registers attracted
over 400 responses. The Review Panel agreed to take up the offers made by
the FFHS and Society of Genealogists to take in the duplicates and make them
available to researchers. Negotiations have yet to start as ONS has
indicated that it wishes to make changes to the regulations relating to
overseas registrations in the summer [2003]. Until the changes have been
made public negotiations have been deferred and the various departments
holding the OSP registers are retaining them at present.
REGIONAL ARCHIVE COUNCILS
An updated list of FFHS representatives on the RACs is published in the
latest issue of Family History News and Digest (available from FFHS
Publications Ltd). Many regions now have MLACs - joint Museum, Library and
Archive Committees - and the FFHS representatives are the only voices to
speak up for the archive users on these committees. Please give them your
full support.
