Hello All,
Searching for any connections to Thomas WATKINS b. abt. 1820 in Glamorgan or
Monmouth to parents James WATKINS and Ann JAMES. Thomas came to the US abt.
1847. Married Julia BLACK MCDONALD in 1854. They lived in Mason County, West
Virginia with 2 sons, James WATKINS b. 1855 in Meigs County, Ohio and
Alexander WATKINS b. 1857 in Meigs also.
I have all of Thomas' info for the states for the most part, but he's become
my brickwall for getting back to his birth information in Wales. He served
in the Civil War from 1861-1863. He was postmaster in Mason County from
1866-1885. In 1888 or 9 he moved to Columbus, Ohio after his wife Julia died
to live w/ his son James and James' wife Elizabeth HUCHINSON. Thomas'
Declaration of Intent states that he was born in County Glamorgan, but his
pension file that I received from NARA states his birth as being in
Monmouth.
Any connections or suggestions for furthering my search will be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks!

Has any kind lister got the 1861 census for Tredegar, I am searching for a Mary Jones and her parents Henry and Elizabeth, Henry was a carpenter by trade, Mary would be about 18 yrs old.
Many thanks

If anyone has links to the above, there is at the moment, a huge old 1870
Family Bible for sale on ebay.
It apparently has lots of old family photos and the inscription reads...
"Christmas gift to Capt. C.M.Davis by his daughter Ella"
Please know I have no connection to the seller but thought it would be a
shame to let this get away from anyone related to this family. Old Bibles
such as this are often passed around by those with no connections to the
family and the pictures taken out and sold.
There is only a day and a half left on this auction so anyone interested
might wish to take a look asap.

Hi All
My ggg grandfather, John Bannister Brown, was an Innkeeper on his son birth
certificate. His son was born in 1838 in Poundery, Llanhiddel, MON. I can
find him in the 1851 Newport census were it states he was a Hay Dealer. In
1852 I can find him in Scammell & Co's City of Bristol and South Wales
Direstory listed both as a Hay Dealer and Beer Retailer in George St.
Does anyone know whether I can
1) Find which pub he was running in 1838 in Llanhiddel
2) Find out more details of his businesses in Newport, both Drink and Hay.
He must have moved from Llanhiddel to Newport in late '38 or early '39 as
his next son was born in Newport.
Thanks for any suggestions about where I may look
Yours
David Hodgson-Brown

Hello Listers,
My name is Norman Archibald and i am new to the list.
My interest is Godfrey DAVIS and his family connections.
Godfrey DAVIS, according to my mother, was known as the hire car king of London. He was born in Abergavenny, Wales in 1891.
He married a Lupe McGUIRE, a cousin of my mother.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone on the list who is researching the Godfrey DAVIS line, or anyone who knows anything of Godfrey DAVIS.
Regards,
Norman.

Shw Mae !
I'm hoping SKS might be able to look up a family for me on
the above census'--The family was JONES. I know they live in Rhymney
,Monmouthshire in 1845. The family details I have are as follows
Elizabeth JONES b c.1808 in (West) Bromwich,Staffordshire.
Edwin White JONES b. c 1838-----all I know is "Wales"
John JONES b c 1845 in Rhymney.
There might well be a Mr.Jones as well as other children. Elizabeth
would be presumably listed as "wife" (possibly "widow" I suppose) and the
other two were her children.
Thats all I've got to go I'm afraid. Hope someone can help out
there: o)

Hi List:
If anyone could do this lookup for me, I would be most appreciative as I've hit somewhat of a brick wall at this point in my research. The woman who did the lookup on the 1861 index said it was the Bedwelty census. Thanks so much.

Rachel, I looked in the 1851 GLAM census in case your Rowland(s) family was
there and didn't find them, but found someone else who might be of interest to
you. I don't think that Adam Rowland would have been a very common name, but
here's one in Caerphilly, Glam, born abt 1784. Perhaps he's some relation to
your group.
*2454 Caerphilly Town/Folio 090/Scd 162
Trallwn -
Rowland, Adam, head, married, 67, blacksmith, born Gla(Mon) Risca
Rowland, Catherine, wife, married, 69, born Gla Llansannor

Society, details of membership and their research service with a full list
of published indexes and transcriptions for sale can be seen on

Dear Jeff,
I agree it is an excellent map. It is quite similar to the map which forms
part of "Tallis's Topographical Dictionary of England and Wales" (published
1860). The map you have recommended was published in 1885 but I suspect it
actually dates from the mid 19th century.
The Tallis map of Monmouthshire is accessible on the relevant part of my
website, as are maps of the twelve other Welsh counties plus the four
English border counties. You can access the Tallis maps via:
http://home.clara.net/wfha/wales/tallis/maps.htm
The Tallis maps show more placenames and also show the hundreds in which
they are situated, but they do not show the ironworks nor the low tide
coastal outline.
At http://www.londonancestor.com/maps/maps-wales.htm you'll also find
similar maps of Carmarthenshire, Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire, Glamorgan,
and Swansea.
Kind regards,
John

Hi Listers
I am a new subscriber to this list trying to find more information about my
G G Grandparents.
The information I have from their Marriage Cert is that George and Ellen
were married at Rosecottage Chapel, Llantisilio Crossenny (Primitive
Methodist) on 9th Dec 1852. George was a widower age 39yrs and Ellen a
spinster ages 24yrs. His residence is shown as Brecon Road, Abergavenny and
his father was Samual Twinney a Cordwainer.
Ellen's residence was Frogmore Street, Abergavenny and her father was John
Pittman a baker.
The witnesses were Ann Pittman and Edwin Martin.
I have not been able to find any more information about any of the above -
can any-one please help me discover more about them and their parents?

I'm looking for Elizabeth Wiltshire in the 1871 census. I know she was
visiting Llanhilleth at the time of the census. She was 20 years old, born
in Camerton, Somerset. I'm interested in the names of the people she was
staying with--whether their names were Henry and Mary Reed. I'm also
interested in whether there was a William Garrett, age 30, and also born in
Camerton at the house. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sue

This was sent to the Suffolk List, but as there are several Welsh born
residents, I thought I would forward it on here. I don't have any clear idea
which area of Wales they belong to, so am sending to both lists.
