Hello
I want to pick your collective brains.
I submitted a request for a quote from the PRO for census microfiche on 9th
April.
In my request I asked to be emailed with the quote, should they not post
quotes overseas, in this case to New Zealand.
I haven't heard a peep from them one way or another.
Does anyone know if:
a) they do post overseas
b) I am just getting a little eager and my response will come soon.

Hello Pam,
I have, on CD, "A Dictionary of Occupational Terms - Occupations in the C19
and early C20", produced in 1998 by The Open University (UK), and it has
this entry:
Boot and Shoe maker; Cordwainer; Cordwinder:
An operative capable of making a complete boot or shoe from beginning to
end, i.e. cuts soles and uppers, attaches parts by sewing, by hand or
machine, or by riveting in the case of soles, makes and fixes heels and
finishes boot or shoe; sometimes specifically designated, e.g. bar shoe
maker, cloth boot maker.
The CD is pretty comprehensive, with many occupations specific to paticular
crafts and industries, but it gives no other definition of cordwinder.

Hi Gail and AL,
Thanks for passing on the info about the Baptist Chapels.
On the marriage certificate it just says The English Baptist Chapel Blaenavon, this was in 1887
Does that date make any difference as to which one it could be?
Thanks Again
Pat
Yes it was built as and called Broad Street Baptist but there were
several other Baptist Churches Horeb, King Street, Forge Side(Zion) and
Ebenezer. In my time(pre WWII) they were all English but I have a vague
recollection Ebenezer may have been set up under the Welsh connexion.

Hello Jeff
In the 1891 census Nine Mile Point is enumerated in Risca-Machen Upper
and Machen Upper, so I would guess in the direction of Risca.
RG12/4383 Folios 44 & 121.

Hello one and all
Just thought you might be interested to know that I have just started my own web site! At long last! There is quite a lot to be done on there, and I will be updating it quite frequently! I have a page on there that is dedicated to my family research and some history along the way, again this still needs a lot of work doing to it.

O wonder if any one might have a census index for Monmouth 1851-1871 that
they could check for my wandering GORVINS? I am especially missing aDavid.

Hi all
Just a note to let you know of a quirk I have found with the 1881 LDS census
transcription. Some of you may already be aware of it but I wasn't.
I have just had my computer repaired and during the time it was away some
listers kindly did a lookup for me of a William George Powell born at
Pembroke Dock about 1871
Marion Teague sent me a likely family she found (no other lister who replied
found them) which listed a George Powell of the right age at Pembroke Dock.
I had my computer back yesterday so I decided to print off the entry myself
and on the Wales/Mon list entered George Powell - born 1871 plus/minus 2
years - Pembrokeshire county. He was not listed in the names found.
Eventually I found the family by scrolling through all the Pembroke Dock
neighbours to the fiche number etc. that Marion included in her lookup.
The reason the entry was not found is that the family did not have the
County transcribed. Marion must have found them by just putting Pembroke
Dock in the Town of Birth field and left the County field as "ALL"
There must be a number of people on the discs that have no County ascribed
to them that could be similarly elusive. I am sure that I would not have
found them without Marion's lookup so thanks again listers.

Hello Honor
We're neighbours (well almost)
What a coincidence. While surfing the net a year ago or so I came accross
this story from 1812. These must be the same people although they are
reported as Schuter and a Miss Fisher.
http://www.moonstonerp.com/reglib/news.htm
When you get to the page scroll down and click on the purple "Wales" menu
item. It's is odd that I found the story as well, as I lived for a time in a
run down bedsit next to the Beaufort Hotel (where they were staying) before
moving to a flat directly overlooking the Wye bridge where the tradegy
occurred.
Is there anybody there....
Is there anybody there...
Best Regards
Dai
