Hello Hazel,
Yes, to answer your question, there is. My husband's great uncle, Rifleman
Frederick DOGGETT was killed during WW1 aged 17 on 29th Sept.1915. He was
in the 1st Mons. and died together with his best friend from Newport,
Rifleman Alfred George WILLIAMS. (We know nothing about him except that
which is printed in the Commonwealth War Graves registers of soldiers who
died in the First World War.) They are buried side by side in a tiny
military cemetery at the side of Reninghelst churchyard, which is not far
from Ploegstert.
My husband's grandfather Sgt. William Harris DOGGETT was in the same
regiment, too. Luckily he survived.
There are three books which give general information about the Monmouthshire
Regiment in those terrible times.
1. "On the Western Front" was originally published privately in 1926 but
has been reprinted in recent years.
2. "With Rifle and Pick" by Janet Dixon and John Dixon
3. "Surrender be Damned" by Les Hughes and John Dixon.
All three are most interesting to read, although none deals specifically
with 2nd. Mons.
There is a specialist military bookseller (mail order only) actually based
in Newport, Ray Westlake, Military Books. He has a web site with the
complete catalogue. Sorry I haven't got the web site address as it got lost
after a hard disc crash!
Good luck with your research.
Liz Pass,
Researching PASS, DOGGETT, CAVILL, INSTONE, REVALDE,
all in Monmouthshire.

Hello fellow listers
I thought I might share some info with you all...
My G.Uncle Arthur Birkin was amongst the first to be killed from his regiment at the begining of the first world war. He was with the 2nd Battalion, Monmouthshire regiment, he died on Sunday, 6th December 1914. Remembered with honour and buried at Calvaire (Essex) Military Cemetry, Ploegsteert, Comines-Warneton, Hainot, Belgium.
Son of Arthur and Fanny Birlin of 4,, D Row, Forge Side, Blaenavon.
I have a photocopy of a photograph that I found in a book on Blaenavon where it is stated that he and a few of his comrades were amongst the first to be killed. His name is also on the cenataph in Blaenavon. The other names and photos are:- Private William Crowley aged nineteen years of age, of 2nd Monmouthshire Regiment who was killed in action on November 22. Private Wrayman Cole of Cwmbran, and Private R. W. Rees, Pontnewynydd.
Is there anyone else out there with ancestors from this regiment??
Kind regards
HazelB

Hello Karen
You are asking for something which would be difficult and time consuming. Newport
covered a very large area with thousands of residents and the 1891 census hasn't been
indexed. If you have a street address (e,g, from a B/M/D certificate or 1881 census) to
make the search easier, then you may find someone who could do a look-up at the
address for them.

ATWELL is one of my maternal family lines. Fred stood as a councillor for
Crindau ward in Newport, MON 1934.I have been given a postcard size
prospectus with his photo. However I have no further details on party or
success etc. Where would I go to obtain these details?

Can someone advise where Raglan Street was in Newport during the late 19th century; my gt grandmother was born there in 1878. I have looked on the internet maps 'Multimap' and 'Streetmap' but can't spot it.
Also many thanks for the guidance on tracing records for people serving in the GWR - hopefully I will get to Kew in the next month and follow this up.
Regards
Martin
Dear Listers
My great great grandmother was HARRIET RICHARDS who was born in Chepstow about 1825.
She married John Dunn and died in Tidenham, near Chepstow in 1883.
Does anyone have any info on this family? (I believe her father's name was John.)
Can any one tell me where the parish records would be held?

Hello,
I was kindly informed that asking to look in the Newport 1891 census would be quite the undertaking. I did not realise this.
I do not know if they would help in the search or not. From Emanuel and Sarah's marrieage certificate I have abode Llantrisant St Wooles Monmouth Would this help in the search of the 1891 census.
Please let me know if I am requesting to much of someones time
Thank you
Karen

I am looking for a TY beanie baby called Wales for a friend in USA with Welsh
roots who collects TY beanies. This bear is only available in Wales and is
red with a Welsh dragon flag on the chest. They cost about £6 and naturally I
would refund all costs! It must be a TY beanie bear.
Thanks
Joan
Something of an odd question, but did anyone from this list write to the
Jersey evening post sometime in the last 12 months asking them to publish
an enquiry regarding two Renoufs who were policemen in Jersey Channel
islands during world war 2 - these were relatives of mine and were related
to Renoufs who moved to Newport in the late 1800's - I would like to hear
from whoever it was
