Hello all
Is anyone researching the names of SALSBURY, or SALISBURY as I have come unstuck on one of my lines and would be very interested if anyone has this name in their research.
Many thanks

I've recently invested in several census index fiche of Newport from GFHS
and wonder if someone would look up a reference for me on the 1851 census?
Film no: 126 Folio: 7
George Jones 39
Maria Jones 38
Edwin Jones 15
Harriet Jones 12
John Jones 10
I would like to know where Maria Jones was born as she doesn't appear in the
1861 or 1871 census index with her family and George says that he is a
widower in the 1881 census.
Information from other census tells me that:
George was born in Gloucester.
John was born in Bristol.
I don't know where Edwin or Harriet were born. I'm trying to find out if
George and Maria married in Monmouthshire or Gloucestershire and as you will
appreciate, with a name like Jones, I need all the help I can get.
Many thanks,
Sue

John,
As always, your photos are great. I particularly like the "Gates and
Stiles." I would never have thought of this. You don't see stiles
much anymore. I can remember them on the farms of my youth, they seem
to have gone away.
Take care and have a healthy and happy New Year,

Hi Listers..Happy New Year. After 20 years my Phillips line is opening up. Is
there anyone out there related to Phillips in Gelly Groes? My gg grandfather
is Henry Phillips (Railway platelayer) born about 1824, who married Sarah Ann
Howells (possibly her second marriage because there is a step-dau.)The
children of this couple are:
William Phillips b.1861 ; John Phillips b. 1863 (my g grandfather); Samuel
Phillips b. 1867 (eventually living in Florentia Street, Cardiff as did
John); Mary J. Phillips b. 1869 twin of Thomas Henry Phillips; Elizabeth A.
Phillips b. 1871; Alfred Phillips b. 1878.
1881 Census states that this family lived in Rose Cottage Mynyddyslwyn, 1871
Census calls it Gelly Groes. If anyone is related I'd love to hear from
you. Here's to a successful year of Family searches! Best wishes, Brenda
Too late for the Christmas market unfortunately, but managed to pick up
a lending copy from Blaenau Gwent Library in Tredegar just before they
shut for Christmas break, 1pm this afternoon (Tuesday).
I have no commercial interest in this book but it is of extreme interest
both local and family history-wise of course. I first heard Ray Burland
(originally from Tredegar) talking about the book on radio Wales a
couple of weeks ago.
Phil Davies, one of our Ebbw Vale FHS members, is a member of the family
who run Old Bakehouse Printers in Abertillery and he told me it was hot
off the press;))
The book is in paperback format (374 pages) and priced at 15 pounds
sterling. You can visit the Old Bakehouse website at :-
http://www.mediamaster.co.uk/oldbakebooks
I have had only a small time to glance through the book but it looks
very good I must say, maps (tithe, etc.) photos, family reminiscences a
gold mine of local history, Risca, Ebbw Valley, St Tudors Church
(1744-), Cwmfelinfach, Ynysddu
Proceeds of the book will go to the 'bell fund' for St Tudors Church.
The book mentions that before 1744 the curates of Bassaleg and
Llanhilleth held services at St Tudors. St Tudor or Tudur is believed to
date from the 6th century, the age of the Celtic Saints. He reputedly
(say's the book) was a Welsh Prince who came to this peaceful area and
lived as a hermit above the nearby Nant Hafod Tudur. He was a celebrated
preacher and missionary.
There is a chapter to the Edmunds families of the area and lots of
references to other families. A very carefully crafted book.
all the best, Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all.

Hello
I just want to convey seasonal greetings to members of this list. Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. May the true spirit of Christmas
permeate your home with warmth and joy and may His blessings be yours
throughout 2003.
My search for lost ancestors has been had its share of successes and
failures. For all the assistance I have received, I give thanks. To the
rest, I know you would help if able. Someday, the Good Lord willing, I will
learn of the precise roots of my Lewis and Davies ancestors in Wales.
Meanwhile, God bless.

Please excuse the cross post and potential redundancy.
Dear List Friends,
I count you all as cherished friends, and wish you all a Happy,
Healthy and Blessed Christmas and New Year!
Best Regards

Hello,
1871 is not indexed name or street, so a search is difficult search
wise. However, Gwent FHS will be bringing out the index in the not too
distant future, probably inside 6 months;)
If you are living near to Cwmbran or Newport then they have the census.
And of course your nearest LDS centre will be able to order for you to
view of course.

Hi List
Can SKS look up the MI for St Woollas, I am looking for the grave of
Rachel Bowen born Aberavon 1837,
interred at Stowe Hill Newport Mon 1853 aged 16 years .
The cemetry there said that they only started in 1854, and suggested
St Woollas. Rachel would have been listed as the daughter of John and Joan
Bowen
whose address was given as 59 Rogerstone Works

Hello Hugh,
Possibly you have not got these MIs although you may well have taken a note
of the Burials whilst at the SoG.
The old Churchyard of St Simon and St Jude, Milton under Wychwood. Until
1854 Milton was part of Shipton u Wychwood.

The numbers at the end are Plot numbers. Unfortunately the gentleman [now
deceased] who gathered this information did not record anything other than
what is shown. There are no full inscriptions recorded.
There are a lot of BLISS families in Chipping Norton.
Happy Christmas to you.
Cheers,
Jill
