Dear Lorraine,
According to "Coroners' Records" by Gibson & Rogers (ISBN
1-86006-049-8), you are very unlucky. I quote:
Gwent County Record Office, Cwmbran
Inquistions:
1871-83 (unsorted, & fragile)
Accounts:
1861-84
Vouchers:
1795-1889
Constables' notices:
1857-83
What you may get from a 'voucher', I know not. Otherwise, I can only
suggest as local a weekly newspaper as possible, of the time concerned.

Thanks for the info Jeff. This certainly looks like the JOSEPH ASHMAN
that I am interested in. If you or anyone else on the List has access to the
1861 or '71 Census' of that part of Somerset, could I ask for a look up of
this family please. I need to get some idea of when his wife Piety died so
that I can get a starting point to look for his marriage to Sarah, if there
was one.
With thanks,
Llew
Hi
I'm new to the list and posting my interests in the hope that someone
may have some information on the following couple.
Joshua MUTTER was born in 1821 in Otterford, Somerset but on the 1881
census he was working as a shoemaker and living at 41 Duckpool Road,
Christchurch with his wife Martha E.
Has anyone come across Joshua on an earlier census or perhaps in a Trade
directory , please.

Sheila
Hello Lorraine,
Barrie did have success with Walter James Ellaway Merthyr Express report
today. I will be posting you a personal email with the details promptly.
The amazing part is that Walter was an agent for the Merthyr Express in
Tredegar just before his death.

Hello Kathy,
Midsomer Norton is in the County of Somerset,England,it is South-West South of Bath.I have the 1851 census for Somerset if you have a particular person you are looking for? There are others though on this list with much more knowledge of that area,

Hi All
Back on the 25th, I cross-posted a message to several Welsh lists asking
for help trying to locate my GGrandfather Thomas William Davies. I've still
not found him and while hard and identifiable clues still seem to elude me,
the response from several of the lists has been tremendous - from a simple
`try this site' to several folks going the extra mile and then some.
A couple ladies are still running on my behalf and not only supplying most
interesting census and baptismal data, but teaching me much more about
Wales than I knew before.
Mind you, I do have some Davies names that I did not have before and
once I feel comfortable enough to spend some dollars, I'll order certificate
copies. But first, I really must find a clear Canadian link back. Tracing and
proving my ancestry, otherwise, will be nigh unto impossible.
Right now, I simply want to publicly thank all who have replied with
assistance or suggestions or knowledge, both this time around and in
the past. If I've missed responding to anybody privately, you have my
apology.

I am also researching an Aubrey family from Pwlldu. I have an Edith Aubrey who married a James Norman. They used to keep the Prince of Wales Inn. Don't have any dates on them but their daughter was born in 1909. Anything sound familiar?

Hi:
May I please ask if SKS would check the 1851 census in either Newport or Merthyr Tydfil for:
Henry JEFFREYS, age 30, born Merthyr Tydfil (Born March 20, 1821)
Mary JEFFREYS, his wife, age 24, born Merthyr Tydfil (Born About 1827)
Their first child was born in 1853, so I'm suspecting that they were married in 1851, but maybe not.
I would be interested in receiving information from the 1851 on any JEFFREYS in Newport, Crickhowell, Abergavenny or Merthyr Tydfil.
Thank you.

If her father was a miner or steelworker, it is quite possible that he was one of many
British workers who went to various european countries to work and impart their skills to
the locals. (Large numbers of miners also went to Russia and established an enclave
called Hughesovska after John Hughes the iron master who built the steelworks there -
later renamed Donetsk).

Hello Lorraine,
I interestingly found Coroners report details of my great grandfathers
death, who incidentally died at Tredegar in 1922 in a Merthyr Express of
that year. The Merthyr Express covered parts of West Monmouthshire and
even Brynmawr (Breconshire) at some time.
CRO at Cwmbran have a card index and I came across information of my
great grandfathers inquest but only as much information as you would
have on Walter Ellaway's death as my experience shows.
I am not entirely sure but I will get Barrie to check the paper on
microfilm in Merthyr, hopefully today (Wednesday) and as you have an
inquest date he may be able to find the report and email you the
details.
A site that someone on the list kindly posted some time ago about the
Newspaper Library holdings is:- http://prodigi.bl.uk/nlcat/
There is a search engine on the site. Try typing Tredegar and you will
see the newspapers that covered the area during the 19c to present. It
is very good. Even baffled some of our local Historical people the names
of obscure Newspaper names.
best wishes,
Brenda, Gwent

Do you or any fellow listers know how
6 REEVES buildings that Mary PEARCE and her grandson were living in was so named.
I am also wondering where Midsomer Norton is.
My REEVES came from Crumlin (Mynyddislwyn?)

In 1851 Midsomer Norton census there is no Joseph ASHMAN, though it is a common surname there.
There is a George W B ASHMAN 6 b Midsomer Norton
living with his widowed grandmother Mary PEARCE at
6 Reeves Buildings.
However in East Harptree 1851 there is this interesting household
EAST HARPTREE 1851 CENSUS, Somerset
H.O. 107/1938
The Village of East Harptree, Highfield Lane, Noahs Ark, Shipham Hill, Tumble Down . Castle of Comfort, Water Street , Middle Street, Church Lane.

ASHMAN Joseph 43 Farmer 15 Acres Midsomer Norton, Som.
Piety 40 Corsley
Lucy 15 Bath
Andrew 13 Bath
Ellen 8 Abergavenny
George 3 East Harptree, Som
MINTY James Nephew 16 Somerset Chapman Slade
SMITH Selina ?? Visitor 16 Farrington Gurney
LOCKYER Richard Lodger 23 Ag. Lab East Harptree, Som
WICKS Charles Lodger 20 Ag. Lab Westbury, Som
My guess is that Sarah was his second wife, whereas the granddaughter is descended from the first wife.
