Hello again, list!
A separate subject - does anyone know the location of Sharon Chapel in the
District of Abergavenny? My gg grandparents were married there in 1842.
Their marriage entry says that it was an "independent" institution and that
the minister was Hugh Jones. I plan to visit Wales during 2001 and would
like to see the building if it still stands.
Can anyone please define "independent" for me in this context? I assume it
means other than Church of England, but I'd like to know the denomination
(Baptist? Quaker? Methodist?) to which my gg grandparents belonged. That bit
of information might facilitate my searching.
Thanks again!
Darla Bell

My name is Darla Bell. I live in The Woodlands, Texas, USA - near Houston.
I'm seeking information on my gg grandparents and their ancestors in Wales.
Her name was Ann Morgan, born July 18, 1823. His name was Thomas Benjamin
Jones, born June 11, 1821.
They were married (according to the marriage entry) on January 17, 1842 at
Sharon Chapel in the District of Abergavenny. Place of residence given for
both was "Victoria in the parish of Bedwellty, County of Monmouth." His
father's name was Benjamin Jones (iron weigher), hers was David Morgan
(miner).
The next information I have is from the 1851 census, as follows:
2461 - 1851 Census of Cwmdu Hamlet (Eastern Maesteg) in Llangynwyd Parish
Ref. H.O. 2107/2451 Piece 2461 Folio 125 Schedule 226, Address:
Macgregor Row
Jones, Thomas, Head, Married, Age 29, Occupation Iron Roller, Born CGN
Llanevyorg (Llandyfriog) c1822
Jones, Ann, Wife, Married, Age 29, Occupation -, Born GLA Merthyr c1822
Jones, Anne, Daughter, Unmarried, Age 6, Occ - Scholar, Born GLA Pontypridd
c1845
Jones, Eliza, Daughter, Unmarried, Age 5, Occ -, Born GLA Pontypridd c1846
Jones, Elindor, Daughter, Unmarried, Age 2, Occ -, Born GLA Maesteg c1849
Their last child born in Wales was born in 1857. The next child (1860) was
born in Kentucky USA, so they emigrated between 1857 and 1860. I know
everything about them after their arrived on our shores.
Although he was born in Cardiganshire and she in GLA, they were married in
Monmouthshire and apparently resided there at one point. I'd very much
appreciate it if you would check your family trees to see if we share these
ancestors somehow. I'd appreciate any information.
Thanks!
Darla

Hi Monmothians,
I have just found this old posting of mine, so thought I would re-send, see
if it attracts any interest..
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this brick wall I have please?
William JOHNS m. Edith ? she was b. abt 1880/85 (He was much older than her.
They resided in Gibbs Road, Newport during their married life.
Edith died in Parklands Nursing Home, Newport in 1966.
They didn't have children.
William JOHNS had a brother Frank JOHNS very much younger than himself,
Frank was a bachelor.
Would love to acquire more information on this family, maybe Edith's maiden
name, from a marriage record, or where William JOHNS was born and his
siblings, I have 1881 census, but found no leads.
If you knew this family, please contact me.
Best Wishes, Hazel in Somerset,UK
I am researching the KENVYN family. My grandfather, Thomas Kenvyn, lived in Crumlin in 1909 and was married to Eleanor Stroud.
His father was possibly Thomas Kenvyn and his mother Catherine (nee Prosser). The 1881 census gives a couple Thomas and Catherine living in 3rd Row Newtown Aberstruth and birthplaces as Ebbw Vale. To date I have not been confirm a link.
Would be interested in hearing from any KENVYN researchers. Where does the family originate from ?
Kenvyn Walters( Yes my christen name is Kenvyn)
Does anyone on this list know where Garfach is in Monmouthshire. I was
told that my grandfather John Daniels was born there in 1845. I have
not been able to locate this place. Any help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Bette Kleitches

It depends where you live. If in the UK, the glib answer is 'at any
booksellers with a decent stock of OS maps'. Doubtless, amazon.com sell
them, too.
Hafod Wenog is likely to be a farmhouse up a hillside somewhere, given that
Hafod means summer dwelling.
Have you a rough idea as to where it might be? And what's the latest date
you have for its existence? I had a look for it on the maps I have but
didn't come across it, but I may have been looking in all the wrong places.

Hi All,
I have a publication of Cheltenham, Glos Settlement Examinations for
1815-1826 and came across a Monmouthshire lady. Hope she belongs to someone.
Am happy to check the book for other names.
"6 August 1825. Ann Edwards. Born in Llanfarrin (?Llanfarnam), Mon., where
her parents were settled. About 2 1/2 years ago she was hired by William
Morgan of the same parish for a year at £3. (mark)"

Jim,
This is excellent! This is my William Coleman - it would seem that I had been looking for a later c1860 birth rather than the 1857! I wouldn't mind having ANY information about Colemans in the Blaenavon area. However, this can wait until you have finished your transcriptions (and I know how long they can take!) and I need to organise the data I have received through the list first to see what I'ver now got!
Many thanks for the information so far and for your interest. I'll keep in touch!

Is this your William Coleman, this is from parish records for St Peters
Blaenavon.
William Coleman son of William and Caroline Coleman of Blaenavon,
baptised 14 Oct 1857.
Also
Elizabeth Coleman daughter of William and Caroline Coleman of Blaenavon.
baptised 9 Dec 1855
Caroline Coleman daughter of William and Caroline Coleman of Blaenavon.
baptised 13 Nov 1859
I have some records, marriages and baptisms and there are a few mentions of
Colemans back to early 1800's. I am in the process of copying all the parish
records for Blaenavon, for my own use, I have not done all of them yet. But
if you have any others I will look through what I have or when I come to them
I can let you have them.
Good luck

Would anyone have access to a Trade Directory? I am searching for Albert
Bartlett (born 1872) who worked in 1886 in Monmouthfor a sawmill on the
steam engines, worked on the Barrie Docks near Cardiff as a stone mason
after that, and worked on a steam shovel at Newport Docks, Newport Monmouth.
Many thanks.

Could someone please search the NBI for me for Undy, Monmouth. I am looking
for a death abt September 1872 for a ?? BRACE. Her husband was Joseph Brace
but I do not have her first name confirmed. Undy, Monmouth is definitely
where she would have died. Any help appreciated.

Hi All, Re-posting my interests here.
I'm still looking for links and other information on the family[s] of DANIEL BAKER [ my gg-grandfather -
b.7 May 1810], married Margaret Nicholes/Nicholls 1833, d. 18 October 1863], and his siblings. Parents
believed to be James & Blanch [WILLIAMS].
Daniel, who was *a Census Registrar for the Pontypool sub-district of Llangibby in 1861, and was a
collector of taxes, a parish Registrar of births and deaths, and a Superintendent of the properties of
Madame De Solignso.*, had the following children :
Frederick
Walter
Ann Eliza
Francis Margaret
Mary Jane
Edward
Amy
Robert
John
The Wentloog parishes of St. Brides, Peterstone, & Marshfield feature prominently in all the information
we have so far, including the 1881 Census - of which I have the LDS CD set - so it seems the family was
quite well spread in the Wentlooge area for many years. When we visited in May last year, we
drove through Wentlooge, visiting the 3 churches but unfortunately did not allow enough time to linger and
make any contacts. Spent a worthwhile Saturday afternoon in Newport Library though - most helpful staff
there!
Have there been any publications on the farming activities or community of Wentlooge, covering the last
few hundred years, say?
I'd appreciate contact from anyone with similar interests, or ideas on following up on the above
information.
Diolch!

Greetings fellow listers:
I have recently purchased Parish Registers for the following:
Llanfihangel Ystern Llewern, 1685-1812
Llanbadog, 1582-1709
These will be available on the OGRE (http://www.cefnpennar.com) in due
course, but if anyone wants a lookup (I'll need the date as there are no
indexes currently) I will be happy to oblige.
Other registers are in the process of being tracked down and I will post as
I obtain them.
Regards
Richard

Hello Dave
The section you are looking for is Risca (St Woollos - sub district
of Newport). As you may know, there are many parts of the 1861
missing, and it looks as if your family is in one of the missing
pages.
