Dear Listers,
Many thanks for the companionship and the great assistance many of you have
given me in my search in Wales. As I have said, my grown daughter and I are
visiting Wales in the fall. At this time I have several major projects going,
including the installation of a new garden. Unfortunately that leaves me
little time for the computer. I am going to unsubscribe until late summer if
I can bear it until then.
In the meantime if anyone has any information about Pengam, Mon.,
Llantrisant, Glam. or Lleido(?) Carmarthenshire that you think might be
helpful on a trip there, please write me privately. We intend to stay in a
B&B in Pengam and probably also in Carmarthenshire unless we can stay in
Pengam and cover it all. There will be no major research, primarily "soaking
up the atmosphere" of where our ancestors trod. And knowing my ancestors, I
am sure that will be in all the local pubs so do tell me about those if you
have any information.
I have had such a good time on this list. Many thanks to all you good kind
people.
See you in the summer.
Kindest regards,
Jodie BOWEN Russu

Hi
It is one of those very old large parishes taking the name of a small
village or place. It covers dozens of places, Cwmcarn,
Pontllanfraith,Ynysddu,Cwmfelinfach Penmaen.Newbridge , Fleur de lis,
amongst others. The Parish church registers date from 1665.It is St. Tewdwr
and
it is on the hilltop roughly between Blackwood and Pengam on the multimap.
Hope that helps.

I posted this recently to the Blaenau Gwent list a day or so ago.
Thought it would be a help to someone:-
These were the Church Burial grounds at Ebbw Vale (Pen-Y-Cae),
Monmouthshire, in date order:-

Held by Cwmbran PRO
Carmel, Carmel Town(1821). Transcribed Monumental Inscriptions (MI's) by
Gwent Family History Society
Wesleyan, Beaufort Road (1822) First English Weslyan Chapel. Demolished
in 1865. Headstones removed 1960 when council bought the land.
Old Penuel, Holland street (1823). New Penuel built 1865. In 1949
converted to a Brassier factory and now a UPVC window factory.
Nebo, Beaufort Road (1825) A new Nebo was built in Mount Pleasant Road
in 1896. Headstones removed 1973.
Saron, Spencer street, Briery Hill (1838). PRO Cwmbran.
Tabernacle, Spencer Street, Briery Hill (1843) as Saron.
St John's Old Parish, Newchurch (1843) closed
St Davids, Carmeltown (1889) Church still in use
Non Conformist burial grounds were administered by the chapel Trustees
and Burial Registers were often kept in exercise books and were not
secure and sometimes lost.

Hi Listers,
At the end of March I am hoping to research the Parish Records for Christchurch.
Having read in Handos Gwent, it seems that the Church was burnt in 1949 and some of the records destroyed.
I have spoken to the records office who hold fiche on some of the records.
My Question is has any body seen the Parish records for Christchurch at the records office and are they worth the journey up to Cwmbran or are they badly damaged.

hi listers,

Would sks please lookup the 1841 census for me for the following person.
Henry Davies , born 1815 in Christchurch Monmouthshire.
He may have been married at this time, though I know he was married to a
Winifred Williams in 1868 who would have been only 7yrs old in 1841, ony
information is gratefully recieved.
If he still lived with his parents at the time of the census, then I've got
them to look for next.

Hello Listers,
My ancestor, Robert Pugh, died in Bedwellty, Tredegar, Wales, 7 Jan 1870. His death was registered at St. George's, but they do not have a burial grounds there. Prior to his death he lived at 42 Morgan Street, Uchlawrcoed, Tredegar, with his wife, Mary Darcy Roberts Pugh, who died in 1880. I am searching for his place of burial and inscription on his headstone. I have been told he might have been buried at Cefn Golu or Dukestown, or possibly Bedwellty Parish Church because Tredegar was once part of Bedwellty Parish. There may also be other church burial grounds nearby where his tombstone could be found, but I am not familiar with the area, as I live in the U.S., State of Utah. I also need information on family members besides his wife. He was born in Dolgellau, Wales, but the year of his birth is uncertain due to discrepancies on his death certificate and the 1861 Census record. I have searched in vain for his marriage record and date of marriage to Mary Darcy Roberts as well. She was a widow whose husband, John Roberts, died in 1829. Mary Darcy Roberts and Robert Pugh helped to raise a grandson, Isaac Herbert Jenkins, born in 1847, who was a Civil Engineer and later married Gwenillian David.
Any help would be appreciated. Norma
Hi,
Does anyone have access to the 1861 Index for Tredegar? If so, I would like a lookup for Isaac Herbert Jenkins. He lived at 18 Castle Street, Tredegar, in 1851 with his wife, Emily, and son, John. I am wondering if he was still living in the area in 1861. If so, was he married to someone else in 1861? Thanks! Norma

gwent.records(a)torfaen.gov.uk
They can be contacted at (01633) 644886 (search room enquires) and fax

For longer searches a list of record agents can be applied.
Among the records held are:-
Monmouthshire Court of Quarter Sessions
Monmouthshire and Gwent County Councils (inc. school records)
Other records dating from 1250 relating to estate, families, business,
etc.
Parish records, births, marriages and burials.
Non-conformist churches.
Maps, enclosure and older Ordinance Survey.
Magistrate and Coroner court records.
Shipping records, Manorial and tithe records.
Microfiche of census 1841-1871, 1891, 1881 census index for the County.

Well - further to my original question as to whether these places were in
Brecon or Glamorgan I have been told (by a very kind person on the Glamorgan
list) that they were actually in Monmouth in 1871 and covered by Bedwelty
Parish. It all gets very confusing because the birth certificates were
issued out of Crickhowell in Brecon and the Marriage (which took place in
Rhymney Parish Church and actually shows the residence as being Tredegar)
came from Bedwellty in Monmouth.
Anyway, now I am faced with getting the 1871 census and, from this info, I
conclude I must get the Bedwellty census. According to the LDS site this is
on 3 films and has districts from RG 10/5319 to RG 10/5327. Can anyone tell
me where should I go to figure out which district to look in and hence which
film to order? Rassau isn't even listed on the Gwent FHS site pertaining to
the 1871 census and Beaufort is shown as being part of Aberystruth and
Beaufort Wells isn't shown at all.
Confused? I am!!
Thanks
Hugh
I have noticed several of the list with Lewis as part of
their research. Does anyone have a connection to Lewis's in
Narbeth specifically an Evan Lewis, the father of Henry
Lewis b. 1648 in Narbeth who m. a M. Proutherin Jan. 1668/69
in south Wales, possibly Llandewy.
Children of Henry Lewis and M. Proutherin:
David b. 1662, Narbeth (possibly 1672)
Henry b. Oct 26, 1671
Samuel b. August 1, 1669 m. Grizzel Keite
Elizabeth b. 1671 (twin? discrepancy?)
David, the son of Henry m. Jane Pickawaxen Their children:
David b. 1694 Virginia or Maryland US-- m. Mary Crawford (my
ancestors)
Isabelle
Mary
Rachel m. Issac Davis
William
This information has been forwarded to me by another Lewis
researcher here in the US, and there a lot of Lewis
researchers with ties to England and Wales. I have no idea
of its accuracy. If anyone has info on these Lewises from
Narbeth please respond to me personally as I am going off
the list beginning Feb 28 till the end of March.
