Hello Warren
Cookies are little bits of information that are put onto you hard disk. You
don't say which browser you are using, but for Internet Explorer you can set
it to except cookies as follows. From the "Tools" menu select "Internet
Options" - "Security" make sure you have the Internet Zone selected, and
click on the "Customs Level" box, scroll down and you will see three
options for Cookies. You can find out more about cookies in the Help menu of
Internet Explorer, "Help" - "Contents" then type in "cookies"

Hi Warren,
Some Web sites store information in a small text file, called a "cookie," on
your hard disk when you visit them.
Cookies contain information about you and your preferences. For example, if you
inquire about a flight schedule at an airline's Web site, the site might create
a cookie that contains your itinerary. Or it might only contain a record of
which pages within the site you visited, to help the site customize the view
for you the next time you visit.
Only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while visiting a
Web site, can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine
your e-mail name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a Web site to create a
cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your
computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it. It's most
useful when you are required to register with a site. Without a cookie you'd
have to register each time you visit. They're really quite harmless, but you
can free up quite a bit of disk space by deleting them. (If you know where to
find them!)
Most browsers are set up to allow the creation of cookies; however, you can
specify that you be prompted before a site puts a cookie on your hard disk, so
you can choose to allow or disallow the cookie; or you can prevent from
accepting any cookies.
I see your ISP is AOL, which I think has it's own particular browser, so I'm
afraid I can't tell you how to turn on cookies.
In Internet Explorer (which is the most popular browser) go to
Tools > Internet Options > Security, click on the Internet symbol then
adjust the setting from "High" to "Medium" or "Low." That should enable
cookies.
As this is not strictly a genealogy question I'd better go now before Ann slaps
my wrists.
Cheers,
Glyn Hale

Hi Glyn and John,
I only put my Christian name as:
a) my husband's father has no connection with Monmouthshire and I'm
researching my family not his
and
b) even if I put my maiden name it would be of interest only to someone from
Suffolk where my father's family have lived for 500 years.

Was interested in the comments about surnames. To emphasize how helpful
they are, I'd like to share a story. I am researching ancestors in my home
town of Pueblo, Colorado (USA). I no longer live there. I now live in San
Leandro, California (USA). I posted a request on GenWeb for Pueblo County
for my grandparents. I decided to also post their siblings married names. I
knew, from reading obituaries that none of them were alive and it seemed
that their descendants had come from elsewhere to attend the funerals. Just
a couple of weeks ago I got an email from someone who had found my request
and said that he was related to the Knebel family and that there were two
of Jennie Knebel's granddaughters who would be interested in contacting me.
That man lives right here in San Leandro!
This is a long story, but I hope that it proves a point!

Very many thanks for the accolade, though I have to admit to not
understanding the rest of your email - perhaps bec. I get the Digest version
and have lost the thread.
I don't know whether this is relevant to your point, and I may well tread on
toes in saying it, but I wish that everyone who writes to these lists would
signal their surnames and (broadly) where they are writing from. Such
information is potentially useful to other listers, both in terms of
providing 'focused' advice and of obtaining information. All genealogists
are interested in surnames, so it's odd, to say the least, if they don't
declare their own.

were found there in 1861, 1871 and 1881.

Hello Dawn
You wrote,
Greetings!!! Thought I'd throw in my two cents...
I'm along county lines back and forth between Brecon, Monmouth and Powys.
Have ordered the BT's for Llangattock, but would like to put this out
there for any possible CALLIN/CULLIN/CULLEN family members that know how
these two families blended.
Looking for the family of Charles and Isaac CALLIN/CULLIN/CULLEN, abt.
1810, Llangattock, BRE, Wales who I believe were brothers.
Charles was married twice, first to Mary FUDGE, daughter of Samuel and
Sarah FUDGE. Two children survived from that marriage a James
CALLIN/CULLIN born 1837 Beaufort, MON and a daughter Ann born abt. 1843.
Charles's second marriage to Hannah MORRIS abt. 1845 produced my g-g
grandfather Absalom CALLIN/CULLIN/ CULLEN abt 1849.
Charles was a lay minister (according to family history) in the Beaufort
Wesyleyan Methodist Church and died circa 1850.
Kind Friends (you know who you are!!!) from this list have graciously
provided me with info showing in the 1851 census:
CALLEN Hannah, h, w, 38, laundress, GLA Machen, Up Needhams Row 5,
/f129/p33
CALLEN James, sl, u, 14, coal miner, BRE Beaufort, Up Needhams Row 5,
/f129/p33
CALLEN Ann, dl, u, 10, , BRE Beaufort, Up Needhams Row 5, /f129/p33
CALLEN Absalom, s, u, 1, , BRE Beaufort, Up Needhams Row 5, /f129/p33
I am trying to find out if James and Ann the half-brother and sister of
Absalom stayed in Wales with CALLIN/CULLIN/CULLEN relatives (and who they
would be, perhaps Isaac) or if they emigrated to the US along with Hannah
and Absalom after she remarried, this time to an "unknown" PARRY.
Best regards,

I also found these 2 entries, although not connected may be of some use to
you.
PETER CALLEN died 16.4.1865 aged 31 of Tranch, Pontypool. Engine Driver.
GEORGE CULLEN died 13.7.1917 aged 40, at Alexandra Docks Newport. Brother of

Is there SKS who could do a look up on the 1891 census for me.
I am looking for Martin and Hannah HALL. They were both born in
Gloucestershire and moved to S Wales sometime between 1870 and 1876. On the
1881 census they were living at Upper Cwm, Panteg. By 1891 they would have
been 50 and 47 respectively.
Pat Chapman.
Well Pat, I did not find your MARTIN HALL, but I did come across these 2
entries from my Free Press of Monmouthshire Index.
CHARLES HACKER died 10.5.1930 at Staffordshire Rd, Griffithstown. Leaves a
wife ( no name ) and children, CHARLES HACKER, MRS BESSIE HARDING and MRS
MABEL HALL.
HANNAH HALL died 28.6.1928 aged 84 at 217 Cwmyniscoy, Pontypool
Hope this is of some use to you.

Here's an extension of the above idea, just to depress you, Jan :-). Given
(a) that your grandfather might not have been born in Newport, (b) that he
might be down as DAVIS, and (c) that perhaps only one of his forenames is
recorded in the index, *any* of the following *anywhere* in any of at least
two of the 1894 indexes could qualify: Herbert or Edward or Charles DAVIES
or DAVIS.

My great-great-grandparents, DAVID DAVIES (b1824, Tredegar), son of WILLIAM
DAVIES, Collier, and ELIZABETH MASON (b1829), daughter of JOSEPH MASON, were
married in the Parish Church, Bedwellty in 1848.
David and Elizabeth's children were William, Sarah (who married David
PEARCE), Thomas, Mary (who married Robert BURCH - originally from Compton
Dundon, Somerset), David, Harriet and Samuel. There was another daughter,
aged 12 on the 1861 census, but her name was not clear, neither was the
place of birth of Elizabeth.
In 1861, the family was living in Chapel Street, Tredegar. By 1881 they had
moved to Park Row and by 1891 they were in Rawlinson Terrace. I do not have
details from the other census returns.
Is anyone researching any of the above people please? Any help would be
much appreciated.
Alison
Hi List,
My grandfather Herbert Edward Charles DAVIES was born on the 13th January 1894 in Monmouthshire, supposedly in Newport. He does not appear on the St Catherine's House Index which has been searched high and low by myself and about four other people, including professional researchers. I am confident of his date of birth as it matches with the date given on his 1976 death index entry, his age at marriage matches back to 1894, plus my father had 13th January in his diary for as long as I can remember, which was confirmed by other branches of the family.
I have his marriage certificate and his death certificate is on the way. My question to the more experienced on the list, is where to now ? Without his birth certificate I don't know his mothers name and that's where my search has ended !
Any suggestions as to where to start looking next for some record of his birth would be greatly appreciated, it's beyond frustrating not being able to get past your grandfather !!
