Hello Alison
Can't help before 1881, but have you got the entry from 1891?
Gellygroes Mill, (parish Mynyddislwyn)
MOORE, Eliza, HD, Widow, 62, Housekeeper, Monmouth
Anne, DA, U, 28, MON Redbrook
Arthur, SO, 24, U, Coal Miner, MON Redbrook
Alfred, SO, 21, U, Miller, MON Whitebrook
Next door in "Cottage" is possibly Henry C (from the 1881)
MOORE, Charles, HD, 31, Coal Miner, GLA Merthyr
Margaret Jane, Wife, 31, MON Mynyddislwyn
John Henry, SO, 5, Scholar, MON Mynyddislwyn
Arthur Ernest, SO, 4, Scholar, "
Eliza Jane, DA, 2, "
So you know that Henry died between 1881-91 and that in 1861 they may have been
in Merthyr Tydfil.
Hope this helps,

Hi everyone,
I am proud to say I ventured to the record office for the first time today and I'm not ashamed to admit I found it extremely daunting.
The good news is I found exactly what I was looking for - my great grandfather's wedding certificate which in turn shows my great great grandfathers name - Edward KERTON. It listed him as a steel worker.
Now Edward may be fairly common name and steel worker a common occupation but I strongly think he may be featured on the 1891 census (four years before my great grandfather Reginald was born.)
It reads:
All Kerton of 11E Row, Blaenavon
Edward (Head) 39yrs old, foreman at steelworks born Brunham Somerset
Eliza (wife) 38 years old. born Plymouth
and goes on to list 7 children.
Could anyone please advise me on the next step to confirm whether this is one and the same person?
Will I have to wail for the release of the 1901 census and when will that be?
Thanks in advance.
April
Could SKS please look up the following addresses in Newbridge, Wales. In the first two addresses I am hoping to find a family of THOMAS and the last for a George BANFIELD.
I have recently been told that Greenfield Street and Greenfield Terrace are one and the same, and that its just called Greenfield, but I have given the addresses as I have found them.
I am interested in any census year even if its just to let me know the search failed.
63 Greenfield Street. THOMAS family
47 North Road. THOMAS family
34 Greenfield Terrace. George BANFIELD
Thanks and a Happy New Year.

Hello Derrick,
You wrote,
I'd be grateful for information about my g.grandmother Ellen. From the 1881
census, she was born in Trevethin about 1841. She married George Powell (date
not known) a coal miner from Somerset who was born about 1845. Whilst living
in Trevethin they had three children - Mariah, c.1866, Joseph c. 1869 and
James, c. 1871. The family then moved to Abercarn.
Thanks in anticipation. Happy new year to all.

Well Derrick I found the marriage which you probably already have. They were
married at Pontypool Registry Office on 9.4.1864.
When you say they lived at Trevethin, of course Trevethin was not as we know
it now with about 600 dwellings and a population of several thousand. But in
1864 it was a Parish in itself, which included such places as Pontnewynydd,
Pontypool and Blaenavon.
I have found a family that may be connected to your ELLEN, which is.
EDWARD BOWDLER, Confectioner, High St, Pontypool. Died 5.11.1870 aged 61.
There is also another entry in my Free Press Index of a similair surname that
may be the same family.
SARAH BOWDER, aged 20 died 21.11.1866. Wife of THOMAS, High St, Pontypool.
Hope this may be of some use to you. These are the only connections I could
find with the names you supplied.
Kind regards
Warren W Lewis ( FOGRO )

Hello,
I was hoping for someone to search the 1871 Census
for the following:
Head of Household: Stephen Griffiths of Pengam
Elizabeth Griffiths was his wife
I was also hoping for a lookup for:
Head of Household: Edwin Griffiths of Pengam
he would have had a son named Edwin age 1 or
2(born 1869)
I realize these aren't indexed, but any help would be
appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Thank you to all the listers who replied with some Edward JONES from the 1881 Census of Monmouth. It seems they don't really fit, our Edward had to have been born in about 1861/2/3 - we have his marriage to Gertrude Maria CARD in Southport, Lancs. July 29, 1883. And he is listed in the Census of Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada in 1891 as 29 years old.
Further clues put him as being born in Lydbury North, Shropshire, the son of John (?) Edward JONES, Boot and Shoemaker. The 1861 Census of Lydbury North shows a John Edward JONES, Boot and Shoe Maker, and wife Hannah.
Can anyone find an 1871 Census of Lydbury, by which time Edward should show up as an 8 or 9 year-old son?
When he married Gertrude CARD in 1883, the witnesses were Llewellyn Robert JONES and Harriet Elizabeth JONES - Harriet could be Llewellyn's wife or sister - but Llewellyn should show up, with Edward, if he was a brother, in an earlier Census.
Gertrude Mariah CARD (Born about 1861/2/3) has not shown on any listings yet but was the daughter of Robert Michael CARD (born Monmouth) and Fanny Eleanor MORGAN, who married in Upton Bishop, Hereford 1st October, 1855. They appear to have raised their family in Lydbury North (although sometimes listed as Ledbury , Sal). So possibly Gertrude CARD would show on an 1871 Census there.
Monmouth Listers, please watch for CARD in Monmouth, MON!
Enough! All clues, ideas or what-have-you gratefully received!

I should be very grateful if anyone who knows Rhymney could tell me where
the area (hamlet?) of Cwmshon Matthew is - or was until at least the 1891
census. I would welcome a connection to a modern day location that I can
look up on a map.
My GG Gmother died there in 1896, having lived there for around 40 years,
and I should also be very grateful for any advice about possible local
burial places? Her religion was Independent (later usually Congregational),
but I expect by 1896, cemeteries would have become more usual?
Many thanks
Nina

Hello Tricia
Golynos (note spelling) is/was a hamlet within the parish of Abersychan.
If you check the Streetmap web site:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
you can also enter Argoed (Caerphilly) and you will see where it is situated.
You can also look at Bryan Morgan's "Kelly's" web site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyalbum/indx-all.htm
and you will see that it is listed under Bedwellty. The descriptive passage at
the beginning tells you how/where it is situated in relation to other
towns/villages.
I haven't checked, but the Genuki site for Monmouthshire should give you
further information.
Cheers,
Pam

I would like to know if the following church still exists. My

Yes, it's still there. You will find details at

I am trying to trace my ancestry back through Wales, My great
grandfather Wyndham Davies, b April 20, 1845 to a Margaret Davies,
b Jan 12, 1823. I do not know who his father was, as she keep her
last name for her son. Margaret lived in Llanfihangelton Monmouth,
Wales. Some time after 1845, Margaret Davies married to a Booth,
I do not have a first name or date. I am looking for more information
on Margaret and her parents. Their names were James and Sarah Davies.
Again no dates or location other than maybe in the Llanfihangelton
Monmouthshire area of Wales.
Wyndham may have lived in the Swansea area as I have he married
a Martha Jones b Nov., 5, 1847, Swansea, and their first child Frances
b Feb. 2, 1866, Swansea. Or Swansea may have been the port they
immigrated to the USA from. They had 13 more children in Martins
Ferry, Ohio. I have a large file here I can share.
John Ball had given me 8 locations in Monmouthshire for the
Llanfihangelton location, and to sign up for the Monmouthshire
genealogy mailing list.
1. Llanfihangel (often spelt Llanvihangel) near Rogiet
2. Llanfihangel Crucornau (often spelt Llanvihangel Crucorney)
3. Llanfihangel Llantarnam
4. Llanfihangel Torymynydd
5. Llanfihangel Troddi (also known as Michel Troy)
6. Llanfihangel-y-fedw (also known as Michaelston-y-Vedw)
7. Llanfihangel-y-gofion
8. Llanfihangel Ystum Llywern (also known as Llanvihangel Ystern
Llewern)
I will appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks & Happy New Year to you all
