I receive plenty of suspicious emails and so far no viruses because
I follow certain email rules.
email says something is attached,I see filenames ending in
.exe or .zip or .bat
I do not open it and immediately delete it.
If I receive a .zip file from someone I know, I always send a return letter
asking
them what is in it. If I unzip it and find .exe or .bat files, I may still
delete it.
If I see filenames ending in
.bmp (bitmap picture file)
.jpg (another picture file)
.gif (another picture file)
.txt (plain text file incapable of holding a virus unless you rename it to
.exe or .bat)
I will download them and send them through my virus scanner just in case.
I have seen files with
.jpg.exe
.txt.exe
I do not open them up and delete them.
Any diskettes/cds that comes from someone else or another PC
I always scan it first with my Mcafee software.
