wasn't there something going on where counties with no cc's would be advertised
way beyond the state affected?

=============
Sorry about this late post. It was stuck in the mail list and I had to
approve it because it was larger than the settings, so please don't take
Laverne's post as a poke. It is for informational purposes so you all can
look and see what you need to have for your site to meet the guidelines.
However, PLEASE NOTE: If you have counties in another state or if you are
an SC for another state, I have been visiting other states to determine the
state of those other state's affairs. I've now been accused of "going
gangbusters" on the issue of getting counties updated. Well, to that, I
say thank you. Did we want another NC that attacks this project the same
old way? Trust me, I am not one for just running online meetings and
managing motions and attempting to deal with new complaints. Yes, it is
part of what I signed up to do, but I love genealogy and want to help
others, and that includes our CCs.
I am now assisting also in South Carolina as it had an SC who has been
pretty absent for several years and no NC has fully addressed the situation
in South Carolina so I am. And as I move through getting SC back on track,
I will not be accepting new CCs who don't have their own counties updated.
There will be an application to be completed which will require providing a
list of your other counties. They will be checked and reviewed. Why?
Because I don't want to just stick people on counties so that the county
list will say every county gets adopted. I truly care about this entire
Project or why run for the NC position? Why should I have run on a
platform of marketing a product that can't live up to what we say we are
doing? Also, while beautiful site designs are great, no CC will be
rejected because they aren't a top of the line designer! I'm certainly not
great at designing sites, but I do type 120 words a minute on straight
copy. I do what I am good at, and that is the most important thing.
Just so those of you who have been CCs in MNGenWeb for a long time, and
also to you who are new here in MNGenWeb, I ran for this position as
National Coordinator to better market our entire project.... not just the
National site... but our entire Project. You tell me.... how do I market a
product that has so many counties that are either vacant, or it's been
years since the "alleged" CC has worked on the site, added material, or
even just LIED and changed the date of last updated? How do I do that?
This project needs an overhaul. And it has rules and requirements. There
are other projects out there to become a part of if folks do not like the
requirements of USGenWeb. This project will NOT make everyone happy.
Counties have been neglected and left to languish for YEARS in some cases.
Why? Because life changes and other things are more important than
genealogy. Believe me, I understand that. In my life I was sooooo close
to being homeless on and off since 2008 and thought that I would soon be
living under the Julia Tuttle Causeway (that's one of the main crossings
from the beach to the mainland), but things got better for me. Perfect?
No, but much, much better and I'm not under the bridge. And now, I am
grateful to have been elected the National Coordinator for what has been
and can continue to be an amazing genealogy project. And I don't just sit
around and do nothing!
I ran a check to see how many counties were "available" for adoption
throughout the Project not long after taking office. Just a cursory review
showed me 371 counties or county equivalents available. Now, that did not
include CLICKING on each county and determining if there was even a site
that loaded! So goodness knows how many of those exist. Stearns County in
MN was one that was not linked, and neither was Olmsted County, both of
which have been adopted by new volunteers.
Now, if you intend to be a mediocre volunteer, I would suggest that
USGenWeb is not where you should be. We can be mediocre anywhere. Is that
what you want here? I certainly hope not.
Well, I'm getting off of my soap box and getting back to work. Please know
that you will see parts of this message showing up on the discuss list and
the SC list as well soon, so please do not be irritated if you are also on
those lists.
I really need everyone's help to help this project shine.
Thanks for giving me your ears and I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving and
a wonderful Holiday Season.
