Terri suggested that I ask you to pass along my plea for help in finding
the stories of ordinary people during the U.S./Dakota War of 1862.
As you probably know, there are many published accounts from the
captives and from the battles, listing the victims. As I was compiling
the list of the almost 450 people who were likely in the Hutchinson
stockade for the Minnesota Genealogical Journal #41 (it is at the
printers and will mail in March), I realized that I hadn't seen many
stories about life in the stockades, the displacement of people from
their farms to the east, or those who had left the area (and even the
state) as a result of the crisis.
I put a plea in my Editor's letter
<
www.parkbooks.com/Html/MGJ_Ed_letter.html>, but since my readership
isn't in the 20,000+ range, I would like your help in seeing if there
are people in your area who might have stories to tell. I have one about
my own ancestors in Henderson, which when I get the facts together, I'll
post on my blog*. It concerns a Dakota brave who sought refuge from the
whites from my g-g-grandfather, a family story for which I haven't found
much evidence, but would certainly like to.
Any help you can provide in getting the word out in your county(ies)
would be greatly appreciated!
