Jackie and all,
Are there other CC's in MN that were using the GenConnect boards that
have gone away since they have all been combined into one Rootsweb
Message Board? I really liked the GenConnect Boards and don't wish to
be an administrator for the new boards, which require that a poster be
registered with
Ancestry.com and raise some big questions in my mind
about copy right, as well as the fact that the new admins will not be
allowed to do any editing...not even at a poster's request. So I
haven't re-adopted the boards for my two counties, but am now looking
for some other query system. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Well, I go away for a mini-vacation and come back to the new boards
-- what fun. I would have to agree that not being able to edit a
posted message is quite ridiculous. Why have board admins in the
first place? Sure, I can delete or move a message -- yippee.
I must say that there is something to this registering business -- I
do like the fact that I should no longer see messages posted on the
query board stating, "My new email address is..." I found that
changing all existing addresses to the new one was a somewhat
tedious process, especially if it was a frequent contributor. Now all
a person has to do, presumably, is change their profile in one place
and the new email is reflected in all other posts.
I'm not sure about my position on merging all the GenConnect
boards...I know I don't like the fact that I can't simply search
Stearns County obituaries from the Advanced Search section.
Copyright policy -- now that's a fun topic.

It seems by this language that things posted on the board remain the
property of the poster. The lingo, "we are a licensed distributor of
such content" means what exactly? Are they saying that they can sell
posts in someway (CDs, for-sale databases)? I've already received an
email or two regarding the switch to
Ancestry.com message boards with
respect to copyrights and what they'll do with the information we
users contribute. To paraphrase one email I received -- does this
switch signal the start/demise of Rootsweb and the premise of being
"The Oldest & Largest FREE Genealogy Site"?
Oh well, back to learning about the new admin stuff...
