Tim,
I don't know about 3 letter abbreviations for MN counties, but
quote from the Minnesota Historical Society Press - Spring/Summer 2001
catalog:
"Available May 14, 2001, the entire contents of Minnesota Place Names will
be available on the web at
http://mnplaces.mnhs.org
Or you can buy the 736 page 7"X10" cloth bound book for $49.95
This is "the classic reference for place-name information on the state's
cities, towns, townships, lakes, and streams. Revised and thoroghly updated
from the 1920 original."

Dick,
Thanks for the info.
Ok, well you're just gonna make me go ahead and tell you the reason I ask! :)
The deal is this. A few weeks ago, or so it seems, I asked:
"I was wondering if any CC has information from the book 'History of
Central and Northern Minnesota' dated 1904 on their site?"
Well turns out a correspondant has sent me the preliminary info on this
book -
containing 1131 biographical sketches on Minnesota persons from 46 counties.
I'm not sure how many counties MN has but I gather this is a significant
portion.
The spread of the sketches is rather concentrated and certain is
disporptionate
it would seem for either county size or population. In other words, I'm
not sure
what criteria was used in gathering the sketches.
What I'm hoping to do as I get this on line is to let the CCs of each
county involved
know of this - and give them links to the specific bios for their counties.
Having
a 3 letter, unique code would make it easier for coding purposes. I
suppose I can
come up with something but was hoping I could use what the Census folks use.
I'll pass along more details as available. I'm still sorting out the best
way to present
this.
